I really like watching Dobbins. Lots of pitches in his arsenal just like Leahy but he seems to have better location. I say that and he throws a slider down the middle that just about goes for a 3-run homer, but just foul.
The Reds bullpen has completely imploded. They have handed this game to the Cardinals again and again all night long.
Leahy is getting hit really hard tonight again and again. Fortunately, several have been at people or held up long enough to be caught. Reminds me of watching a Jake Woodford start.

Boy oh boy does Gorman need a hit here.
And he does what he almost always does except this time it wasn’t a changeup.
I wonder if the Cards would swap Leahy and Dobbins. Leahy has been mostly fine but more of a #5 guy.

I’m going to give my unqualified opinion on this whole BA thing. And yes, of course ERA is important! You win and lose by runs scored and it directly measures that. Obviously, you can have too small of a sample size to matter, but over the course of 50 or so innings, it definitely matters.
Batting average is a fine measurement. The problem is people treat it like .280 is better than .260 over 200 at bats. That’s 4 additional hits in 200 at bats to get to .280. We all know how random baseball can be and how sometimes a hitter can make a great swing and get robbed and a poor swing and end up with a double. Yes, it all generally averages out – but not over a measly 200 at bats! There is absolutely no way to tell which of those 2 hitters is better over 200 at bats by only looking at their batting averages. The other factor is hits don’t necessarily equal runs whereas ERA is all about runs. Ultimately, getting on base is what is most important. Walks are GUARANTEED to get someone on base. Every time. Hitting the ball extremely well is not even close to guaranteed to get you on base. Maybe only 50-60% of the time. And you have to get on base to score runs (aside from homers). Therefore, while a walk isn’t as good of an outcome as a hit, it is ultimately FAR superior to swinging because it gets you on base guaranteed every time when you earn one. On base percentage is far more important to scoring runs than batting average. It’s not that batting average is irrelevant – it’s just that people often overplay it.

Wetherholt has some soreness that kept him out of Wednesday’s action. Sounds like that extends through today.
Interesting that they kept Torres. Maybe the fact that he’s playing today against a righty at 2B was enough to keep him over Saggese. I don’t think it matters much as Urias will be back soon and that likely means Torres goes down unless the team is going to cut Fermin or Velasquez.
Gscottar – I think you are correct in both that the Cardinals will be sellers and who they might sell. I do think Noot may stay until the offseason. That just depends on his value at the trade deadline. Call it 50/50 on him. I would also consider Crooks, Fermin, or maybe Pages as options to be moved. I think Stanek may have some value. He’s pitched better lately and relievers with high octane stuff peak in value at the trade deadline. But you’re right on Urias likely not having much of any value.
Bling – If you watched his games and listened to him talk, you might be more inclined to believe what I’m saying to be true.
There is a certain amount of inconsistency. That is true. But some or more than some of that is due to some experimentation. I believe he can do what he did yesterday most any night if that’s what he decides to do (not necessarily a 1 hitter because baseball is too random, but within some margin of error of that). I know most people don’t think like that or would ever do what Quinn is doing. But I think that’s just him and the way he is wired.
Likely will see Torres optioned for Nootbaar today. There are lots of possibilities of who to remove, but Torres makes the most sense from a roster construction standpoint. Lefty outfielder for lefty outfielder. Keeps Velasquez as a right handed thumper on the bench. And it doesn’t limit the team to only having 1 backup pseudo-infielder in Jose Fermin. That’s why I expect it to be Torres.
I would expect Urias to replace Saggese in about a week. I’m very interested to see who Church replaces when he returns in probably about a week. I think it should be Victor Scott, but I’m not sure the team is ready to go there yet.
I said the other day that Matthews was absolutely top 5 in our pitching prospects and that he could turn it off and on at will. This is an example. He’s still toying with pitches and at times toying with hitters. Yes, he can lose control at times. But he is learning and figuring it all out.
Good to see lots of solid candidates again. Maybe not quite as high end as the hitters, but good nonetheless. I probably would go Rajcic based on the numbers, but I’m fine with it being Odle. He just needs to quickly advance because of his age.
Albert – Dattalo was moved to Palm Beach a little over a week ago so some of his numbers are from there. He is still doing well.
Great to see so many players have an excellent May. I agree with picking Cho. It’s been awhile since he was good. Glad to see him put together a fantastic month.
“27” – You want to add Hansen, Rajcic, and Jordan. That requires 3 40-man spots, which we could make by jettisoning Bruhil, Roycroft, and Fermin as you have outlined on this post and your other this morning. But that depletes our depth, which isn’t all that deep as it is. What happens then if Hansen gets hurt? We now have no 2nd left handed option other than to rob Mautz or Matthews (which would be another 40-man spots), but those are our depth starters in case our starters get hurt. You might put the team in an irresponsible situation that could have been easily avoided. Also, are you sure Hansen is better than Bruhil? I’m not. In fact, I kind of think he would be worse. And while Rajcic is probably better than Roycroft, Roycroft isn’t actually pitching in the Majors right now. I don’t know that Rajcic would be better than Graceffo. He could be used to get Dobbins back to starting at AAA. But does that help that much?
Looking at Nado’s numbers this season, keeping him would have helped. I actually lobbied for keeping him simply because he’s right handed and still plays solid defense and because of our pitching and left handed heavy lineup, the Cardinals actually made the most sense as far as teams that fit his skillset.
At least now we know what we probably already knew about Gorman. He strikes out a ton and only hits low fastballs.
The Cardinals lack 3B options dwallyn. That’s why they picked up Urias. Fermin and Saggese can stand there and not look terrible, but neither has a very good track record. Prieto has looked better there at Memphis this season, but he hasn’t hit at all in the Majors. If they had another option, I think they’d do it now.
Gorman’s saving grace has been that his defense has been pretty good. With occasional power that shows up, that isn’t terrible. But I agree that he’s looked even worse lately.
I agree 1TD on expected winning percentage. It’s fairly meaningless. There are blowout games where a team sticks with its worst pitchers that can make vast swings in number of runs but it’s still just one win or loss. You can use it to work backwards to guess around what a team’s record is, but using it the other way (as it so often is) is dumb.
