In making decisions on how to build our 2017 MLB roster after the 2016 season concluded, the Cardinals had 7, 5, and 4 years of professional performance to determine how Grichuk, Wong, and Piscotty would project into the roster. Hopefully they were taking that into account, and not which round they were drafted in years ago. If it was the latter, then our problems aren’t getting fixed anytime soon with that approach.
Yep, for a guy who’s taken a lot of criticism for his defense, that was a perfect play, perfect throw by Carpenter. It possibly gives us a chance in this game, but somebody from the pen is going to have to go a long middle stint. Now I’m going to do my yard work and will check back in an hour to see if we’re still in it. 😉
So we’ve had 6 batters to open the game. Three Cardinals have made outs and three Reds have scored. Might be a good day to do some yard work.
Cards up 4-1 after scoring on a passed ball, which led to an enormously too-long replay review. After play resumed, the Reds’ broadcast analyst asked why the Cardinal base runner was still at 2nd after Voit scored from 3rd on the passed ball, and then talked about the Cards’ season-long travails on the base paths. I had just wondered that myself when I saw the TV base indicator show we had runners at 1st and 2nd instead of 2nd and 3rd. Of course, the base runner at 2nd was Carpenter. He has a surprising and extreme lack of instincts on the bases for a guy who evidently studies the game so much. Didn’t matter though since Gyorko followed that up with a K.
Oh holds them in 7th, so we need two more good innings out of the pen.

You’re in bad shape when the success of the team depends on a lot of “hope” that is not very well justified. No wonder so many are disappointed in our organizational brain trust. Yes, they failed.
DeJong strikes out to end the game with the tying run on third. This team stinks up and down the lineup.
Matheny used Gyorko as a pinch hitter in the 7th tonight in a rare scoring situation (two on and two outs). Gyorko struck out swinging on a pitch in the dirt. He’s struggling, to say the least.
I certainly wouldn’t pick Piscotty as the cleanup guy, but we simply don’t have a real option. Voit, Grichuk, or DeJong is about it if it’s not Gyorko. Seriously, how did Mo ever think this was going to work?
As an NC State alum, I’m glad to see Mendoza and Knizner doing well. I just wish we could’ve drafted Trea Turner. 😉
It’s enough to make you weep to know we’re going to be paying that guy big money for three more years after this one. Four years for this guy is perhaps the biggest head-scratcher I’ve seen our execs make.
Speaking of the Braves and “another” Freeman, I was in Atlanta last night and saw the Braves beat the Dodgers. I wanted to check out SunTrust Park. I also was hoping to see Matt Adams play, which didn’t happen, but I did get to watch Sam Freeman pitch a scoreless inning of relief.
Just shows we have another miscalculation by our front office regarding Molina’s extension…unless they are planning to do something with MM, Yadi, or Kelly…yeah right. On a good day, this FO is stuck in neutral.
With some of Mo’s moves the last couple years, we might be better off that they’re frozen in a state of inactivity. Often, the best trades are the ones that aren’t made. Yep, let’s just go with that. 😉
Cards were just plain bad tonight, in most aspects of the game. This is why they shouldn’t buy anything short-term this year–just too many things need fixing. And when have you ever seen a team play defense that badly in a game without being charged an error? Middle defense was particularly bad.
Rosenthal with a 2-inning save. That was impressive, and just when the pen really needed him to take over. Nobody else was going to salvage the 8th like he did.
It’s obvious Cecil is just dangling candy over the plate for their hitters. Two on no out. You gotta yank him NOW.
Watching Oh pitch the 7th was tortuous, especially against the lefty Herrmann. It helped that he got the one strike call that was a half foot outside. Hopefully the Cards can score in the 7th to take some pressure off the pen. Cards lead 1-0.
This one didn’t line up to be a high probability chance for us. The one bad inning killed Weaver, but it looks like it wasn’t really going to matter tonight.
Did you see that number somewhere, or did you actually tally it up? Would it be determined by prorating the minimum MLB salary for his time up? I guess he’d get credit for two service days (or would it be just one?) divided by a full season of service days (I think I remember seeing somewhere 172 is the number used), then multiply that by $535,000 (min salary I think). Then, I guess to get his real net, you’d have to back out two prorated days of his usual salary. Just curious.
