Ok, how do I post a new topic? Cant find the button for that. It says I need to be logged in to start a new topic but I am logged in (or I couldn’t post this). Sorry if I am missing the obvious here.
August 1, 2017 at 7:08 am #29247Try reloading the page before starting the new thread. Some browsers are holding cookies from when you were not logged in and and “remembering” those settings. This has both kept people from posting as well as members from reading subscriber articles.
I have looked into this, but there seems nothing I can do from this end to influence how your browsers react to the site. Fortunately, the workaround is easy as a page reload clears it right up.
I will be looking for your new thread – ready to disagree with you! 😉
August 3, 2017 at 8:28 am #29432Is there any way to block people? or ignore their posts?
Now that ist has been a little while i am figuring out who some of the new screen names are….and remembering how long i have had them on ignore on the Scout forum and how that was a major factor in dealing with personal attacks and some people’s BS that only is posted to embarrass or instigate
also…is there a way to make pages in a thread? or at least make them so they list most recent to first instead of oldest to newest? Some of the threads take forever just to scroll to the bottom. Especially on mobile devices.
August 3, 2017 at 9:23 am #29446I am not aware of an ignore function here. The moderators are not going to let people get out of line, but one needs thick skin to participate in any public forum, especially when the team is underachieving.
I thought about asking you all about page length, but I doubted I could reach a consensus. I can set the number of comments per page at any value. The trade off is that just a few comments means extra paging, but too many comments per page means long scrolling.
Is there a general feeling what we have is too long? Or is it too short? Or about right?
August 3, 2017 at 12:18 pm #29460thick skin isn’t the issue… threads become full of some individual people’s notions and sometimes you just dont want to see that as the overriding opinion of the forum just because they post more than others… some people are not even worth responding to as they have dug their head so far into the sand that they serve only to antagonize or bring threads to grinding halts…
ignoring CAN have to do with specific people being harassing to you individually but in my experience what it really does is allow me to WANT to come back to a place even if specific individuals are annoying harassing or dominating threads with their opinion so as the other people’s comments get lost
page length is what it is…do what you want, but leaving at infinite seems not a good strategy as some threads are intended to go on for as many posts and arent subject to time limits like game threads and are meant to be continuous threads that change throughout the year
August 3, 2017 at 12:26 pm #29465Not every feature on the old board, which no longer exists as we knew it by the way, is available on this software.
It is not as if the ignore feature is here and I need a sales pitch why I should turn it on. I just don’t see it among the available options. I will look more into it later.
That I left you with the impression that page length is “infinite” is wrong. If it was infinite, I would not have asked if it is too short. To be specific, the number is currently 25.
August 3, 2017 at 7:00 pm #29512If the length is set to 25, that must be only for topics on a page. The trades thread is over 100 posts and still is only on 1 page. I think that is what is in question. I have no problem with the length being in the 25-30 range. That makes it easier to navigate around the forums and topics.
August 3, 2017 at 7:11 pm #29513There are three settings which appear relevant.
Topics per page
Replies per pageBoth are set at 25.
Enable threaded (nested) replies x levels deep
This was set at 5, but I just lowered it to 3 to see if it will help out on the width issues some are having.
Perhaps it was taking 25 replies nested five deep and allowing up to 125 comments per page. If so, I just cut it to 75.
August 3, 2017 at 7:13 pm #29514Is there anyway to get posts to stop nesting and just go to the end of the thread? Or, how do you copy a post? I have noticed some being able to do that.
August 3, 2017 at 7:17 pm #29515The “Cards in July: Buyers or sellers” thread is over 150 posts and still on 1 page.
August 3, 2017 at 7:21 pm #29516Question 1. You just did it! The key is to post at the bottom of the discussion thread. The only way comments are nested is if you click on REPLY to a specific comment already made (like I did here).
Question 2. The 4th box from the left just above the area in which you type in your comments says B-QUOTE. It puts HTML text ahead of the words you want to quote.
Then to end the quote, hit the same box again. That box now says /B-QUOTE. It will add the HTML to end the quote.
August 3, 2017 at 7:37 pm #29517You are right. I did not notice that. There is clearly something broken. Will look into that ASAP.
Also, my apology to Jager as it appears the current reality is infinite length threads. Hopefully we can get this fixed.
August 5, 2017 at 11:02 am #29688I continue to sporadically get a mobile version when I open a thread. Is there testing going on to that regard that is causing this? Is it something I am doing?
August 5, 2017 at 11:39 am #29695CC, I cannot tell enough about your problem to be able to comment and do not know of others reporting this. What kind of device are you using? What do you mean by getting a mobile version? What do you see? How do you get it to go away? etc…
August 5, 2017 at 12:33 pm #29701There are still several things about this board that make it more difficult to navigate than the old board:
1. Can’t mark posts as read.
2. Difficult to determine which threads I have posted in. Yes I know I can click on my screen name but that is tedious.
3. When clicking on a thread it reverts to the top and we have to scroll all the way to the bottom to find most recent posts. The threads are very long.
4. I haven’t mastered how to quote a poster in my new post.
I don’t mean to be a complainer. Just making observations.
August 5, 2017 at 12:39 pm #29703You can click on the time of the last reply in a threas and that will usualky take you to the end of the thread and work back from there. Diesn’t always work though if the reply is nested.
August 5, 2017 at 12:46 pm #297041. I have said that marking posts as read does not appear to be offered on this software. I don’t know what more I can say about it other than it is still not offered.
2. I am sorry you don’t like the approach, but that is how it works.
3. As you can see from the discussion just above, the threads not paging is a big problem. It is not working the way it should. This is our current #1 priority to fix, but it has not been fixed from yesterday to today.
4. Just above, I explained to forsch31 in detail how to quote others. If that is not clear and you have other questions, please ask them. Otherwise, I don’t know what else to offer other than to suggest you follow the instructions.

Hi, I haven’t quoted yet and was just checking to see if I could follow your instructions!
August 5, 2017 at 4:18 pm #29723Bingo!
August 6, 2017 at 6:51 am #29782Folks, you many notice two changes this morning. First is that pagination is now working. The reason why is the second change – no nesting of replies. It turns out that though it is not well documented, the two are mutually exclusive in this software. By shutting off nesting of comments, paging started working.
Unless there is a high level of disagreement, I plan to leave it this way. In fact, had I known of this tradeoff, the forum would have been set up this way from the very start.
Thank you to the readers who brought this to my attention.
August 6, 2017 at 11:39 am #29811Good choice Brian! Much better!
August 6, 2017 at 5:00 pm #29869I DEFINITELY like this better.
August 10, 2017 at 10:37 am #30226A couple of things broken overnight as other problems were fixed, including new users no longer having to do an email exchange to get a userid. Instead, we installed reCaptcha to cut this to one step while also trying to keep out the persistent spambots.
New problems:
1) Tweets and other links are not showing other than their URL.
2) Free users not logged in cannot read Open forum discussion threads. Of course, if you are reading this, you are not experiencing this problem. The temporary workaround for this is to get a free id and log in. Then you can read the Open forum.
Both are being worked on.
August 10, 2017 at 5:34 pm #30259I just got a free account so that I can continue lurking and reading the open forum. I might suggest that until you fix the bug, is there a way to notify non-registered viewers that there is a bug being worked on, on a lead banner or non-forum page? It was somewhat frustrating. Thanks and keep up the good work.
August 10, 2017 at 9:35 pm #30299so cal, thank you for taking the time to register and post. Your idea is a good one. I added an explanation of the problem to the page which lists both forums.
(Now that you have registered, feel free to join in the discussions!)
