That will free nearly $10 million in payroll but leave us without a closer. Also increases chance of Seigrest returning. Not sure that is a good thing.

But agree with most of the rest. Don’t believe Sosa would make it through waivers though. If Gomber is unprotected I believe we lose him.
I dont think Hensley throws hard enough that he could have so much success if he didnt either change speeds or have movement. Even pinpoint control wouldn’t get you that good of results.
I’m not sold on Mercado as worth protecting. He has dropped off a lot and I think it is unlikely he would stick all year on a major league roster (not even the Padres). Add in the fact that he is probably about #11 on our OF depth chart, it would not be the end of the world if we lost him.
Valid arguments Jag. I think the Cards for go tbe third catcher this year. I think your fave Valera is more likely to go than Mejia but hard to say.
Wick is pitching better lately. Tough call to give up his potential for the seemingly greater certainty of Montgomery.
Ironic that Carpenter nearly screwed over Rosenthal after his earlier criticism of Rosenthal. Hopefully Rosenthal holds his tongue.
Jag, to make your additions you would need to remove 4 players from the 40 man roster. Who would you choose?
Basic rule for rule 5 eligibility – 4th rule 5 draft after signing if 19 y.o or above at time of signing. 5th rule 5 draft if 18 y.o. or less at time of signing.
An intersting case is Alcantra. He signed in 2013 but did not play. But that makes this his 5th rule 5 draft and thus eligible even though he has the same number of minor league seasons as Junior Fernandez who signed in 2014 and is not eligible.
I actually had hope that Helsley would pull a Rosenthal and go from low A one season to STL the next.
If it were all stats, Pearce would also be ranked higher.
Given we still have Carpenter I think we should be targetting J.D. Martinez instead of Hosmer (of course a lot of other teams will be doing so also).
Mendoza only moved up to Peoria not PB (see my post from yesterday) their is a Mendoza at PB but he is the Cuban pitcher they signed this year in late June.
While some wont want to hear this, I wont be surprised to see Voit removed from the 40 man roster. Possibly before thr season is over.
One thing that had escaped me is that the Cardinals have the best record in the Central since April 12th. We forget they started 3-9.
I didn’t list pitchers in my first post.
Pitching candidates for me include:
Flahert or Hudson (I can see them sending one but not both) – innings will be key and both may be excluded just for that reason.
Pearce – a chance to up his prospect status/show case for trade?
Ar Reyes – see Pearce
Ponce de Leon – a very strong candidate since it looks like he should be healthy.
Hergert – Every year the Cards seem to send a pitcher that makes you scratch your head. He could be that guy this year.
Alcantra – a chance to see him as a reliever?
Ellis – another bullpen tryout candidate
Evans – could use the innings
Gallen – probably not because of the number of innings thrown
Morales – 40 man roster tryout?
Nielsen – longshot
Helsley – chance to see him against better competitionMost likely 3 go. Poncedsleon, Ellis, and Morales are my predection here. Next two on my list would be Helsley and Reyes.
Not sure how I missed him as I specifically checked on him but I left Ponce de Leon off the list. He slides in at #4 for me.

Actually, I believe in Leake’s case he must be pulled back from waivers if a claim is made due to his no trade clause. A deal can then be worked out or not. So a team claiming Leake actually has no risk in claiming him.
Folks inside the organization would not normally be considered objective observers. This is the organization that hired him and continues to choose to employee him.
Garcia for Bruce – what is the hold up.
Martini for Bruce – go for it.
Drake for Bruce – why not?
Grichuck for Bruce – would have done it 2_weeks ago for sure. Time is getting short to make it worthwhile.
