Anyone care to speculate on candidates?
Here are some possibilities
Infielders:
Seferina-audition for the 40 man roster
Sosa (if healthy)
Mejia – I can see a scenario where Valera gets a September call up and Mejia goes to the fall league.
Edman – test against better competition?Outfielders:
O’Neill – big league prep
Ar Garcia – got a late start so could use the reps
Mercado – test against higher competition and 40 man roster tryout.
Martini – 40 man roster test
Drake – may be bester OF defender. Needs the hitting work.Catchers:
Knizner – if he goes, look for Kelly to be on the trade block!Probably 4 of those at the most go along with 3 pitchers.
You never know how many available spots because you don’t know what roster moves they might make. We have a full 40 man roster plus Reyes on the 60 day DL. So not re-signing any of the 3 potential FA’s (Oh, Lynn, or Duke) there are 2 spots open. But might the re-sign Lynn or Duke? Do they try to sign a big bat like Martinez? Those spots can disappear quickly.
They most likely will remove or trade Gilmartin and one of Valera/Mejia/Sosa. Wick probably as well. Mayers may also be at risk. They could (should) pull a 2 or 3 for 1 trade that could open some spots. It is really hard to say at this point. The team’s actions probably depend on who they think is at risk of being taken and who they really want to keep.
Thinking out loud – should Pearce be on this list?
Even though I am in favor of trading Kelly, I am always overwhelmed by the poise and character of this young man.
Kelly wont graduate. Will be about 5 days short of graduating via service time and unless Yadi gets hurt, wont get the ab’s. Weaver graduated during his last game though.
I have seen a lot of posts at this site and others speculating about the off season and 40 man roster spots and rule 5 protection. I did a post at the old site on this but will.update it here (basically starting over). Here is my take on those who I believe either need rule 5 protection or can become minor league free agents if not added to the 40 man roster.
I am not going to speculate at this time how many spots will be open but merely suggest the order the Cards might choose to protect them. Some will disagree and I welcome the feedback/discussion.
1. Alcantra
2. O’Neill
3. Gomber
4. Ellis
5. Montgomery
6. Mercado
7. Seferina
8. Sherrif
9. Morales
10. Martini
11. Reyes
12. Wisdom
13. DrakeI have gone to 13 because that is the list of those that I think are at risk of being taken (though it is very slight after #8-9.)
You can click on the time of the last reply in a threas and that will usualky take you to the end of the thread and work back from there. Diesn’t always work though if the reply is nested.
I continue to sporadically get a mobile version when I open a thread. Is there testing going on to that regard that is causing this? Is it something I am doing?
I was o record as advocating trading Kelly ever since the Yadi extension a before Yadi’s petulance.
You don’t waste a valuable asset by having him wither on the bench for 3 years. You don’t sign players for $20 million a year to have them around to coach someone. A player doesn’t sign for $20 million a year and expect to be treated differently than he was before in terms of playing time.
Has Herget been overlooked as a prospect? He currently has the highest season ERA of his career at a whopping 3.36. Every other year it has been below 3. Consistantly strikes out a batter an inning with a 4:1 k:bb ratio. Career WHIP a very respectable 1.19. Has moved slowly but steadily up the system.
Valera hitting .529 with a 1.427 OPS in his last 10 games. SCORCHIN’!
While only 10.2 innings, Morales was unscored on in July. With tonights performance his ERA for the year is 0.57.
I think.this is the least interesting starting group.of the year. Ellis seems to be better lately but still.very inconsistant.
More talented than Pham, I would debate.
Of course not, there has been no.solution!
Why Pham?
Ok, how do I post a new topic? Cant find the button for that. It says I need to be logged in to start a new topic but I am logged in (or I couldn’t post this). Sorry if I am missing the obvious here.
Who goes? Molina? Matheny? Or Kelly? I dont see all 3 being here next year. I never wanted Molina and Kelly (thought if the signed Molina they should trade Kelly). I hope at this point it is Molina who goes (waives his ntc). But most likely is Kelly who goes
You said you thought O’neill had a long term spot locked down. I stlll see lots of guys ahead of him on the depth chart that a ,240 ba won’t move him ahead of. Yes, he is only 22. Maybe he’ll raise his ba maybe he won’t.
I’m not ready to hand a starting position to a guy hitting .240/in AAA.
My reticence with trading Grichuck is lack of another power bat. Grichuck is the onlu current roster hope for a major power bat. I only trade Grichuck if I have a plan for adding another power bat.
My phone seems to be jumping back and forth between the original format and what appears to be a new mobile format.
As a note, when in the mobile format, the link to the last post on a thread simply takes you to the top of the thread.
Can you remind us which minor leaguers have already participated?
That is still one long bridge.
Unlikely as regulars. Like it or not, Fowler is here 4 more years. People need to get used to that idea.
