Bader didn’t play today in Memphis. Probably not a good sign of him returning quickly. I haven’t seen an update after DH Friday in Memphis. Hudson did start for Memphis though, so hopefully they at least get him back in the rotation.

Matz to the IL and Naile recalled. Didn’t mention the severity, but at least 15 days now.

Initial thing I saw said Herrera, Capel, Spangenber were going to be added (and just confirmed on broadcast).

And Oviedo passport is expired and can’t get into Canada either.

KC had 10 players that couldn’t travel to TOR when they went.

Doubt the Cubs will deal with STL, Contreras is going to be expensive, STL would have to pay more to the Cubs more than likely, and I also don’t have much interest in him. He as consistently graded out as one of the worst defensive catchers.

BTV has him at 9.5. Which means Yepez/Nootbaar and Nunez for him, or along those lines. No thanks. Not for 2 months of Contreras.

TOR is an all RH rotation, so I would guess, with the roster said, we’ll see a couple games something like
    1. Edman – SS (S)
    2. Carlson – CF (S)
    3. O’Neill – LF (R)
    4. Gorman – 2B (L)
    5. Pujols – DH (R)
    6. Donovan – 1B (L)
    7. Sosa – 3B (R)
    8. Nootbaar – RF (L)
    9. Knizner – C (R)

    Spangenberg (L), Dickerson (L), Capel (L), Herrera (R)

And I say with the roster said, because Bader went 0-3 as Memphis DH Friday, didn’t play yesterday, was said he was going to play CF today if all was going well and possibly play in TOR. So he could be back, if vaccinated, for the series, if the foot is feeling better.

Correct, they can’t travel to Canada where you’re forced to have the vaccine.

Herrera, Capel, Spangenberg will be active for the 2 games.
And no Spangenberg won’t need added to thr 40man as there is an exemption for this situation.
He hasn’t been in the bigs since 2019 with MIL and has an unimpressive .219/.291/.403 with 89 K in 238 AB in Memphis this season, but he does have the ability to play 3B, 2B, 1B, and LF.

Reported Arenado, Goldschmidt, and Romine are the known unvaccinated players and not eligible to travel to Canada. I’ll leave my political points out of this, so it doesn’t get shut down like JT thread did.

It’s not a night game. 12:40 central. And no lineup posted that I’ve seen yet.

Buster Olney was reporting SD was very agressive and “heavily invested” in the Soto talks and he views them as a the favorite. I still think the Cardinals need to “help them” clear some of that money they need cleared to get under the luxury tax.

1)Snell to SEA for 1-2 minor leaguers
2)SD Gets: Soto (WASH), Corbin (WASH), $8 in 20204 (WASH), Nootbaar (STL)
STL Gets: Clevinger (SD), Pomeranz (SD)
WASH Gets: DeJong (STL), VerHagen (STL), Myers, Abrams, Gore, Hassell, Merrill, Weathers (SD)

Then use the likes of Baker, Nunez, Gomez, Paniagua to get a RP. Won’t get Barlow or Bednar, but can use them to get Chris Martin (if the Cubs would help, and yes I’d rather have Robertson. But I think NYY are going to get him, especially with the season ending injury to King), Trivino, Kennedy, Melancon, Bass, Bard, or ?.

    Mikolas, Wainwright, Clevinger, Matz, Hudson
*That’s hoping Matz isn’t hurt too bad again and all the more need for SP.

Pallante, Thompson, Fernandez, Hicks, ?, Cabrera, Gallegos, Helsley
*McFarland DFA or package in the trade for the ? RP to offset some money. If Pomeranz is able to come back this year he provides some more LH pen depth and then next year Thompson can attempt to be a rotation piece and Pomeranz the 2nd LH reliever.

Burleson is probably a DH. Walker is probably a DH with the currently defensive alignment, although he may have a shot to play OF.

Exactly why I say move O’Neill for a SP, move Nunez, Baker, whatever lesser prospects for a RP. Let Burleson be LF/DH, Donovan DH/Utility, Yepez and Dickerson in there somewhere. Start getting Walker reps in LF. 2023 Burleson can pencil in as LF, but if Walker can play it and forces his way to MLB then he can be LF and Burleson and Yepez are DH/LF/RF/1B, if Walker isn’t ready then Burleson and Yepez are the same role just getting most of the reps in LF with Donovan still in the mix and also getting some DH and Utility. Keep the versatility available. There will be injuries to deal with and more guys AB’s at spots.

    Burleson, 23, 6’2″ 212, L/L, AAA, 311 AB, 106 H, 16 2B, 1 3B, 16 HR, 21 BB, 51 K, .341/383/.553. Serviceable in LF long term probably best at 1B, compared to Lance Berkman.

    Walker, 20, 6’5″ 220, R/R, AA, 280 AB, 85 H, 21 2B, 3 3B, 8 HR, 37 BB, 74 K, .304/.392/.486. Plays 3B, don’t know a whole lot about his D, talk of moving him to different positions with Arenado at 3B, bat has been compared to Goldschmidt.

SD was also mentioned as being very agressive in the Soto talks, but money is a problem. So make my before mentioned 4 team, 2 trades, happen and get some pitching.

Trout and Ohtani were both mentioned as possibly available if LAA wanted to totally blown it up and try to rebuild. Trout has a huge contract and no trade clause, but his BTV value is about a 66 due to the age and contract. Do we have a Kent Bottenfield and Adam Kennedy to send them for him? I don’t see them trading either of them at all, but you never know what they might try after spending all this money and failing every year.

Hayman is on MLB Network and keeps mentioning the Cardinals as suitors for Soto and the prospects the Cardinals have is what they are looking for. I really hope it’s all speculation and they aren’t serious about it.

BTV has Giolito at 29.1, Kopech at 21.5, and O’Neill at 27.8

    O’Neill, 27, $3.4 million, FA after 2024
    Giolito, 28, $7.45 million, FA after 2023
Kopech, 26, arbitration after this year, FA after 2025

I don’t know that they’d move either or if they’d want O’Neill, but I’d sure wouldn’t mind seeing it.

If you can believe the interview with Boras. Soto is wanting a higher annual value than any other player and a stable franchise. This gets him both, and another bite at the apple around 30

I didn’t look up the AAV for the life of the contract, I know Arenado got some lower years that make his AAV lower, but 2022
    Scherzer 43.3
    Trout 37.12
    Rendon 36.57
    DeGrom 36
    Cole 36
    Correra 35.1
    Arenado 35
    Strasburg 35
    Lindor 34.1
    Seager 33
If he wants to be the highest paid player the contract is going to be huge. He’s got 2 arbitration years left to be bought out and then the extension. Even if your very conservative and say buying out the years at 20 and 25 then he wants highest AAV AND he’s still only 25 at that point. The Cardinals need to get out and build a whole team and not be LAA with their huge contracts for top players weighing down anything else they can do.

    Bling couldn’t be more right,

    this whole thing absurd

perhaps Herrera would have to replace Julio

Those 5 are a 82, which equals Walker and Burleson. And WASH got Ruiz from LAD in the Turner deal at C who’s 23 and starting this year for them. Herrera doesn’t appel to them.

I’ll say this, if he publicly said “I want to be a Cardinal and I will sign a 10 year $320 million deal tomorrow there.” I would consider giving Walker, Winn, Graceffo, Hence, O’Neill, Nunez (which BTV says is still 29 million, equivalent to Edman, in trade value light). So I don’t see WASH taking that deal, having internet in 2.5 years of O’Neill, and I definitely don’t see Soto not going to the open market. I think to sign him now would take 15 years and $500-525 million, and in 2.5 years on the open market, who knows where AAV could be and he’ll still command 10-12, maybe 13 year deal, of course depending on how the next 2.5 years go.

Libby – #2 rank in MLB
    Malcom Nunez – #10
    Julio R. – #20
    Yepez
    O’Neil

Not even close. They want top talent, and rightfully so. BTV has those 5 at a 61.5 trade value to Soto’s 176.8 himself. I understand Soto is a special talent and as I’ve said in other threads trading him now is like trading a young Harper, Trout, and close to a young Pujols. It’s going to take a haul, but I don’t want to see the Cardinals give up what it’s going to take.

Leone couldn’t stay healthy. When he was he was serviceable. I know Grichuk isn’t great, but that trade was bad.

I don’t mind Rosenthal and I wasn’t suggesting the Cardinals should have signed him, just making a joke about the former Cardinals in the SF pen.

    O’Neill minus 2021
    219 games, 586 AB, 136 H, 22 2B, 1 3B, 25 HR, 12 SB, 4 CS, 48 BB, 211 K, 6 HBP, 8 SF, .232/.293/.401
*done quickly in my head so I apologize if they aren’t 100% correct, but I think they are.

2021 was an outlier in my opinion and I don’t think he’ll ever come close to it again, and he doesn’t seem to be able to stay on the field. I was all for selling in the off season when the value was really high on him. But yes, if I could get Giolito or Kopech for him I’d do it in a heartbeat and give Burleson a chance at LF. But if Bader isn’t expected back sooner rather than later it would be hard to make that move too.

Rosenthal signed with the Giants. They placed him on the IL with a hamstring injury, but expected back soon.

Guess they like former Cardinal RP. Brebbia, Leone, and now Rosenthal. Cardinals prefer former KBO RP’s.

Not a chance I’d ever do DeRosa’s deal. I like DeRosa too, but that is a killer. It doesn’t improve their chance at a world series hardly at all for this year or the next 2. It rips apart the future. And then if they sign him it rips apart a limited budget. And he’s not “falling in love and taking a pay cut to stay”.
Hold onto the future. They make that trade they still have a middle of the pack to bottom third pitching staff, and in 2 years they are trying to trade him to rebuild an empty farm system with a pending free agent 36 year old Goldschmidt and 33 year old Arenado and wondering how they don’t turn into what the Nats are this year only a few years removed from the world series.
Trade O’Neill if your moving a OF and make room to give Burleson a chance and I think he’ll succeed.
But most importantly add a SP and a middle to late RP. That’s what’s needed.
