I think the starting rotation should be:

    Mikolas
    Wainwright
    Matz
    Woodford
    trade acquisition

Start Woodford until he shows that he can’t handle a starting role. Matz had a terrible first game and an even worse 6th start. The 2nd, 3rd and 5th starts were really good. In his 6th start, he threw 34 pitches in the first inning. The next 2 starts were OK but I wonder if he was already hurting. Then he went on the IL while warming up for his 9th start.

    Set the bullpen as:
    Hicks
    Gallegos
    Fernandez
    Helsley
    Cabrera
    Oviedo
    Naughton
    Thompson

If they want to have Hicks be a starter, send him to Memphis and let him learn how to throw 7 innings there. Otherwise, have Pallante be a starter at Memphis.

More than likely, one of the pitchers would be going to whatever team the Cardinals could acquire a SP from.

What could O’Neill, Woodford and another piece get us for a starting pitcher?

What are you going to do with Hudson forsch31? He should be off the IL soon.

Well, one of the pitchers would probably be traded. That would open up a position on the staff. I am kind of mixed about Hudson. When he is on, he is very good. Then there is the up and down that he has done this year.

Buster Olney was reporting SD was very agressive and “heavily invested” in the Soto talks and he views them as a the favorite. I still think the Cardinals need to “help them” clear some of that money they need cleared to get under the luxury tax.

1)Snell to SEA for 1-2 minor leaguers
2)SD Gets: Soto (WASH), Corbin (WASH), $8 in 20204 (WASH), Nootbaar (STL)
STL Gets: Clevinger (SD), Pomeranz (SD)
WASH Gets: DeJong (STL), VerHagen (STL), Myers, Abrams, Gore, Hassell, Merrill, Weathers (SD)

Then use the likes of Baker, Nunez, Gomez, Paniagua to get a RP. Won’t get Barlow or Bednar, but can use them to get Chris Martin (if the Cubs would help, and yes I’d rather have Robertson. But I think NYY are going to get him, especially with the season ending injury to King), Trivino, Kennedy, Melancon, Bass, Bard, or ?.

    Mikolas, Wainwright, Clevinger, Matz, Hudson
*That’s hoping Matz isn’t hurt too bad again and all the more need for SP.

Pallante, Thompson, Fernandez, Hicks, ?, Cabrera, Gallegos, Helsley
*McFarland DFA or package in the trade for the ? RP to offset some money. If Pomeranz is able to come back this year he provides some more LH pen depth and then next year Thompson can attempt to be a rotation piece and Pomeranz the 2nd LH reliever.

That must have taken quite a bit of effort 667. Thanks for the read.

Thanks, I think I just watch and read too much baseball and it’s all my head still has in it when I lay down at night.
But with Matz expected to miss 4-6 weeks, possibly longer if surgery is needed either Pallante has to stay in the rotation or they are going to need 2 SP. And somehow I forgot Naughton on my roster. So I guess leave Pallante in the rotation and Naughton in his pen spot. Keep Woodford and Liberatore stretched out in Memphis if they are needed, sorry Woodford I know you deserve a shot.

I would prefer they move Pallante to the bullpen but the Matz injury does complicate things. I like the idea of acquiring a new SP, move Pallante to the pen, give Woody and Libby a shot at the rotation, then hope Flaherty is ready by September 1.

Here is a question that ties somewhat to Juan Soto. Should the Cardinals consider going after Andrew Benintendi? He’s clearly not Soto and about to be a free agent. But, he will come a lot cheaper and provides a solid left-handed bat. He can play LF and DH. That could slide O’Neill to RF with Carlson in CF.

The Cardinals say they don’t go after rentals. Would they be able to sign Benitendi?

667, I don’t mean to be critical, but the Cards getting Clevinger and Pomeranz for DeJong, Nootbaar and VerHagen feels one-sided in St. Louis’ favor. I admit I didn’t check player values.

Marquez would be a very good addition, if Colorado would deal with us post Arenado. I think he would benefit from getting out of Colorado, and our defense.

I think they ought to send a package to Oakland for their catcher Jeff Murphy and Montas, rather than pursue Soto.

According to BTV, the Cardinals actually lose 0.2 in value because of the Pomeranz contract. SD loses about 7.2 in value, while WASH gains about 7.5 in value, which is why I say WASH paying about $7-8 million of Corbin in 2024 to even it out and make that $34 million a little more acceptable for SD.
I don’t know that it works in reality, but in my opinion it solves a lot of problems, wants, for all 3 teams, and leaves the Cardinals with their prospects to make other moves and for the future.

Interesting. Thanks for the additional detail. As was noted, you put a lot of thought into it.

Would anyone be more interested in Xander Bogaerts than Soto? Reports are claiming Boston might be in sell mode….

What about Ohtani? He can slug AND pitch. He is only controlled through 2023 so his asking price shouldn’t be any higher than Soto’s.

I am really not for gutting our farm system but if you are going to do it then get a guy who can help the offense and the rotation. I don’t know if he is available but the Angels don’t look like a contender to me.

According to things I have read, the Angels have no plans to trade Ohtani. That tells me a team has to overpay to get him.

OAK Sean Murphy would be a major addition slidinlefty. 3.5yrs of control and a bridge to knizner / herrera, whoever plays himself on the active roster.

Murphy’s worst season with the bat was a 98 ops+, from the catcher position. Career 111 ops+, 229 GS.

Tigers are willing to listen to offers on Tarik Skubal. He’s 25 and under control through 2026 and won’t hit arbitration until 2024. Guessing Detroit is just looking to cash in on his good season hoping to land a couple of quality prospects. That said, Al Avila has a history of really awful trades and getting a young lefty who is pitching like an ace and under control for the next few years.

I would be, but they need bullpen help as they can’t seem to hold leads and some outfield help. I don’t know how much we can help them there….. Maybe an O’Neill, Yepez, DeJong, Fernandez, and Pacheco for Bogaerts and Plawecki. I see our deal as a help them to win now and some future.

I think another trade option for pitching may be the Braves. They just lost another outfielder. Maybe move O’Neill for one of their young starting pitchers (have a bunch) and bullpen help.

Well it definitely shows there is attainable help out there so we have no excuse of just doing nothing.

Guess my idea of the 3 team trade is out the window as WASH GM said he’s not diluting the Soto trade by including Corbin.

Gscottar, I like that idea much better than Soto!
