Thats one reason I was saying the other day we probably need two more moves… That we shouldnt be done even if we are.
Playing for the wild card basically means you’re playing for a 50-50 shot at whoever won the most games. It’s a crap strategy.
Now… If you honestly feel inproving our bullpen will win us 12 more games then fine… I can see the argument.
It is bunch of bull, but I can see the argument.
Having a great bullpen can help you get hot for a month (see cardinals in 2011 and royals in 2015) but you still need the team to play out the rest of it.
We have the pieces to have a stupidly good pen by october. I get that. I just dont think the rest of the team is good enough to do anything worth mentioning.
90 wins? If that’s our goal we have issues and they start at the top.
…and yes I fully realize we can acquire guys at the deadline… If you like overpaying even more than we would now anyway.
If the answer is “there are no good answers” then choosing stagnation is not the correct answer and it seems to be the choice they have made for a very long time now.
Historic bidding for some guys. I keep wondering if the guys under the top 3-4 free agents might be better off waiting a year due to the sheer number of high end guys.

Other organizations would kill to have our catching depth. 3 guys like molina, kelly and knizner is nearly unheard of…
Dejong doesnt have much value at 3rd compared to ss…
People get fixated on his homers and forget his bat doesnt compare as well at 3rd. I dont think he would be better than gyorko.
I can empathize with that pov as well… Just still going to point out again that we have too many players to play them all.
If you put flaherty in the spot the guy from japan got and dump fowler thats almost 20 million for a true difference maker (assuming we have to eat some money).
Our organizational penchant for signing middling players millions instead of going for real difference makers is insane.
Yeah.. occasionally we will look smart. That’s great. It still isnt enough to be much more than a wild card team this year and we have the assets to be significantly better.
I should add… What I mean by guys that should be at least backups (eventually)..
They’re age appropriate prospects who have had decent success at some point.
Hell the biggest stretches on that list (valera and sosa) both have major points in their favor. Valera hit well in aaa despite his limitations and sosa is on the 40 for a reason.
…and I knew I forgot carpenter can play 2nd if we need. Not well but still.

Brian, I’ve been very consistent in saying we need around three of those deals. Our depth, even with that is still absurd.
And i will point out that yes we did just do that trade. we also picked up two similar prospects from oakland for piscotty. net on net, IMO we only really traded alcantara, piscotty, and the throw-in for ozuna. Those other two guys are VERY similar to gallen and sierra as prospects just at different positions.
We’re in an absurd position that when we trade our excess big leaguers for minor leaguers, we are still contributing to our excess that we just dealt from for better players.
In other words, we shouldn’t be REMOTELY done yet.

To an extent I agree with that sentiment.
However… It needs also be said that no matter what we simply dont have enough spots for the talent we have. Trading several players for stars like ozuna needs to keep happening.
Our depth is just abnormal on a ton of levels. Sierra probably wasn’t even the best of the three guys we have at aa and aaa as an example. Gallen was one of about 10 guys we would need spots for within two years.
Our infield has this type of depth too.
I cant think of another org having this type of depth happen with 20 years of following systems. It is a little absurd.
i’d rather see carp in left and sign hosmer.
and yes, that means giving away fowler. i realize i keep repeating things like that because it’s so bloody obvious.
The people who follow our farm pretty closely might say very similar things about seferina.
Who is better? Honestly it doesn’t matter. seferina is a year older so schrock probably wins, but well… Your point about us now having having MI depth is the point that was made earlier to day in the OF thread and is very valid. I could do the numbers but i think we have 8-10 viable major leaguers at AA or higher at short or 2b or both … and that’s without diaz.
it’s an absurd number to go along with our outfield numbers as well. And it’s why i’m sitting here saying “we aren’t done” even if we trade grichuk. We simply have too many players blocked or ready. yeah, it’s all well and good to try and keep a few of them but trying to keep all of them is flat dumb…. and this offseason it just feels like they don’t want to do that.
I think grichuk will end up in tampa. Too much smoke for no fire. Either way I see no way he is here.
I think bader is our 4th guy. I think our fifth might be valera. Why?
Why not? Gives O’Neill etc everyday atbats for a month or two to see if valera can stick in his super utility role.
I think there will be one more deal besides grichuk though. We know we are still jammed up and need to clear some space.
Jager just nailed what I was thinking but I dont think he took it far enough.
With this trade we now have a similar situation in the infield as we did in the outfield. Tons of depth but no stars at aa or higher.
I cant think we are done. Maybe next trade is in March but I think we will have at least one more big one this offseason.
I didnt vote for hudson or sierra in the 6-10 range.
And I just described why.

My feelings on the prospects we sent havent changed.
Gallen still dominated the acc in college and needs another pitch to stick long term despite his success.
Alcantara still needs consistency and to learn how to channel that talent… And was one of about thirteen guys who needed room in the bigs in the next two years.
Sierra had issues hitting at aa… And nobody knows if he will fully develop into a stud. And we have …how many outfielders with similar upside? (A TON is the answer) IMO we sold relatively high on his mlb hype. If he develops… Well we got an allstar in return. I will take it.
… And I still dont know who the last guy is. Maybe I should.
Point with all this… We had to be willing to package prospects to get players. Our situation demanded it. Did you expect an unrealistic valuation given how highly I think of our system? You have to pay to play the game.

sierra we are dealing from strength and i’m not sure he will hit. if he does, it’s a loss but i highly doubt it is an impact loss when we are dealing FOR a guy that plays the outfield with a much bigger bat.
alcantara could be huge… or not. he struggled badly in aa to start the year and turned it on toward the end of the year. huge arm but you have to give up something.
gallen? derek covered him. if he sticks as a starter he’s a loss… from a team that has a ton of guys like that.
and the other guy is a project.
we didn’t lose guys that i feel like would have been a long term loss to our team. i think we have to call this a win.
bader is 4th of in my eyes right now… no reason to go outside when he need to be in the bigs. maybe arozarena or o’neill in an emergency.
we have a ridiculous amount of players at those positions.
