Go big or go home. Again. You upgrade by paying the price to do so.
You can upgrade several of those positions. One of them just by playing kelly for sixty games (his stats even if they are lower than molina would be a huge upgrade over the backup catcher abs from this year). I doubt they would be much lower than molina if they are.
Having said that.. Would I trade for donaldson? Nope.
You’d be paying for past performance. He is going to be 33 next year.
Who would I trade? Literally anyone. You do what should have been done at the deadline. Shed some salary, trade maxed out and/or aging talent (dejong, pham, and carpenter off the top of my head) and backfill as needed. You get two big bats… At least.
Just not donaldson. This is not a rolen trade. This is not even a mcgwire trade. He is too old for the price they would want.
Pay for solutions not more problems.
21. Sosa — too low imo. He has solid big leaguer written all over him.
22. Seferina — probably not too low… But proof our system is stupidly deep. Can play.
23. Tewes — this guy could be next year’s flaherty. Had #1 college (friday night) starter stuff at wichita state and was projected as a 2nd or 3rd rounder before he got tj surgery. Steal in the eighth round. Definitely like his peripherals better than connor jones.. And he was in a rehab year. Next year should be an improvement… Which gives a guy who went up two levels this year some possibly impressive helium upcoming. This was about where I wanted him before I got trigger happy last five 🙂
24. Edman — decent helium… But not sure his bat plays at higher levels. Next year will show me either way. Hopeful here but trying to stay reasonable.
25. Matt pearce — could be in our bullpen next year
16. Carlson — same reasons voted him 15…he could shoot up this list pretty far next year. Next year being 19 at high a gets a ton of leeway from lower stats in a horrible hitters park.
17. Fernandez — Gets downgraded a lot because his stats arent as good. He was 20 at high a. Electric stuff. If he finds a third pitch could be a top 50 guy in two years. Potentially next year’s flaherty.
18. Sosa — as I pointed out in the last five he had an ops higher than league average with above average defense — from a shortstop who is age appropriate (read: young for league). More than good enough for top 20.
19. Delvin perez — gotta put him somewhere. Still think this is too high but… Potential is a strange bird. Nothing … Then something. Hope his head is in the right place because he aint shown anything.
20. Sam tewes — because someone has to be the first to bring up a big college arm on a tommy john rehab year that charged higher through the system. We flat stole him in round 8. Probably early for him but so what (Just felt like throwing a curve.. Actually had other names first. Dont care lol).

Here is a big hint: for someone who tries to throw around the “we all make mistakes” you sure jumped down my throat for something petty. Grow up.

I honestly don’t care. When everyone is protesting everybody else, how many of them actually mean anything?
At some point people either settle down and accept that others are different or we have a guerilla style civil war — worse than we do now.
(In no particular order) White people can’t go safely into certain places at night (native reservations and certain urban areas). Blacks (rightly) feel that things havent changed enough. Mexicans are worried about themselves or their family being deported. And don’t get my wife started on women’s issues or this will never end.
We need a voice that gets all of these groups to shut up for five seconds and realize that we all got problems. While making them feel good about it.
Haven’t seen a politician who comes close to that one in my lifetime (I’m 39).

Think about this another way.
No matter what, sometime in the next 18 months you’re going to have to have a conversation about yadi and his career winding down.
You have two catchers who are his most likely replacements in the minors. One is ready now. One will be ready in the next 18 months if he pans out.
The next question is… Which one is better?
My money is on carson. Which means you have to have that conversation sooner vs. later — like it or not.
One thing that should be said as well… We may be looking at two of the best ten or twenty catcher prospects in all of baseball in the last decade. That is remarkable and I think it is a reason they are so low on our prospect rankings.
That doesn’t mean you just go trade carson… Because stuff happens in baseball… And knizner might just have had an awesome year. But our catcher situation is bordering remarkable at first glance.
I dont care what yadi wants.
Odds are quite good kelly plays more games over the next three years for us than he does. Not great.. But maybe 30-40%.
If yadi gets hurt he won’t get his job back.
You dont trade that away.
While I agree with that in general I would rather see the organization give molina a “come to jesus” moment where they sit down and give him the facts of life.
You are our present. Kelly is our future. 60 games per year is what he will be starting. take your sixty million in severance pay and deal with it.
And while I am thinking about it fire matheny if he isnt standing there lock step and especially if he doesnt follow through during the year.
Ideally that is what SHOULD happen. Because there is zero way (imo) that molina doesnt get injured for a significant period of time for the next three years even if they do cut his time down (much less if they don’t). Kelly needs to be kept if at all possible just for that reason.
You don’t trade a guy who compares relatively favorably to buster posey.
Saying “we are all not perfect” is a nonsensical copout and isnt even an argument. It is a distraction meant to cast blame at the other party without actually dealing with the points that have been brought up and is more often than not used when you don’t actually have an argument.

That many players imploding screams a bigger problem than individual failure.

We both know he did … Which is why our defense got worse…. Again. And we still had the same pitchers until he overused them and others imploded.
The gm shouldnt have to make moves to constantly save a manager from himself.
Between weaver, tui, etc do you really think the bullpen couldnt have been fixed sooner? How much of that is because matheny was saying things to our gm that were flat wrong?
… And our rotation has gone the other direction generally speaking. 2011 we were middle of the pack … 8th in the nl. We are 4th with a terrible bullpen…. And wainwright having gotten old. By pretty much all measurements we have gotten younger and better and should improve next year again.
Some of that is matheny but you can’t have it both ways. If he isn’t responsible for the lack of development with hitters he isnt responsible for the development of pitching either.
I agree in one sense. I spent most of last summer loudly complaining we should go get trout and pay through the nose if necessary.

If he is developing players then he is responsible for our lack of great hitters. If not, then the pitching isnt because of him either.

High pressure situations you are always under attack. Someone pointing out that he is at best average and that being part of a solution is a job requirement hardly qualifies as a feint much less an attack.

Youre not looking at both sides. You’re concentrating on a few stats that are only partially in his control.
If you refuse to see the negative, which you are very good at (and jager is damn near famous for), it is fairly easy to think he is good.
I’m willing to go with him being average fyi… that isnt good enough for me with all the national opinions saying he is worse.
When you get handed the keys to a defending champ and things go generally backwards…

I said it months ago and I will say it again. He hasnt necessarily been part of the problem. However he has DEFINITELY not been part of the solution. He is loyal to players but isnt capable of seeing their negatives.
At his pay grade those last two are inexcusable.
If there is a better manager he should be fired. I am not totally convinced on that front to be honest.
It is virtually universal on the national level by people who follow baseball or who have played. Ive seen it so much it has almost become a meme how bad our manager is.

You are in denial.
Just because you’re biased or against someone for different reasons doesnt mean you are wrong.
At best he is average. Yes he was handed a mish mash roster. But there is enough talent here to be better than we are.
And he hasnt gotten the job done.
Fundamentals are worse (our foibles are a running gag). He has a major long term blind spot (yadi). The players obviously are not motivated and that area has gone very downhill since 2011.
At best, you can say he is average. When you’re a team that competes every year average is not good enough.
…And keep in mind that this is coming from someone who is relatively indifferent (not indifferent, just try to keep things relatively in perspective) because managers don’t win or lose more than ten or so games per year.. and maybe five games tops in the standings.
But when it is virtually universal that he is a bad manager… You’re in denial is the best I can say.
Also keep in mind… Five games in the standings… Well… You can do the math.
11. Knizner — I voted him sixth. My reasons havent changed even if he fell out.
12. Arozarena — centerfielder with a bat. Voted him tenth.
13. Helsley — I respect production. And 100 mph arms. He might be in our bullpen this year.
14. Ja garcia — thought about him in last round a bit. He is probably too low because he can play center but who do I drop?
15. Dylan carlson — this one is different for me. I tend to skew toward production and older players. This guy survived in a horrible hitters park in a league he was probably too young for… And he did fairly well — slightly below league average ops at 18. It wouldnt shock me if they skipped him past Palm beach relatively quickly simply because it is if anything worse for hitters… Either way 19 at high a screams future upside.
