I had to chuckle when I saw the headline of State College’s recap of today’s win.
SPIKES CONTINUE HOME RUN FRENZY, BUT FALL TO MUCKDOGS, 8-3
As I posted yesterday, the team had just three home runs through its first 21 games. Last night, they hit two, and today, two more. I guess for them, that is a frenzy.
Interestingly, Brady Whalen hit one each day – one from each side of the plate. Now that he is a first baseman, that power needs to emerge for him to have a chance.
Is it possible he is playing first to add that versatility because third seems to be blocked at every level ahead of him? He may still have a future with multiple options.
Anything is possible, but I believe he was moved off third because his defense was not up to expectations. He made 16 errors in 126 chances over 50 games at JC last year. As a point of comparison, the player next to him, Delvin Perez, committed just six errors in almost the same number of chances, 120.
If they wanted him to be a multi position guy, he would be getting at least some time at third this year, which he has not. FWIW, the move off third also happened not that many years ago to both Stephen Piscotty and Carson Kelly.
