I could get aboard with a 1 year contract for Strickland because it would come with the upside of 2 more years of control but without any commitment.
I hope the Cards decide their choice, and don’t let other teams decide for us. Make your decision, and don’t be scared of another Cecil. I’d like to see 2 lefties added, that way we’ll see Cecil less, or not at all. Or at least a quality righty and lefty.
We could add Avilan and Sipp and be way ahead of last year. I don’t mind avoiding Britton and Miller at 3/36 or wherever they sit right now. I say remember Cecil and learn from it.

Cecil and Gregorson are signed and making good money. They will be in the pen. They just signed Shreve so he will be there too. But, you are right…they are going nowhere.
I was thinking about Holland and how he had such success after leaving St. Louis and eventually joining the Nats. I’m wondering if his lack of success in St. Louis was brought about by Matheny’s unwillingness to use the shift. The Nationals do use the shift and Holland was great pitching there. I’m also wondering, now, if Cecil will do better this season because Shildt will be using the shift.
Greg faced 80 batters as a Nat and half walked, hit a home run, struck out or poped up to the infield. Leaves 40 batters to draw a conclusion from.
Cecil reminds me of Lyons. Developed a good breaking ball for a while and lost it.
Not sure what ’80 batters, half-walked’ refers to. All of Holland’s stats were remarkably better as a Nat.
Wouldn’t it be nice if Cecil could be good? I mean, wouldn’t it? He had a .957 WHIP and 5.38 SO/W in 2015 for the Jays. I don’t hate Cecil. I just hate how he hasn’t been getting outs as a Cardinal.
The 80 batters Greg faced didn’t all put the ball in play against the Nats shift.
Half either walked, K’d, HBP, infield pop-up, etc.
At best your “vs shift” sample size is 40 batters, is what i meant.
Let’s see how Holland does in the FA market this winter. My bet is that he isn’t going to get much money. More like Bud Norris’ scrapheap deal last year.
My issue is not the level of his improvement with the Nats. After all, being better than he was with StL was about the lowest bar possible. The issue is that he was trending downward before the Cardinals signed him and they got burned. His days of being a relevant MLB reliever are likely over.
Then somebody was getting inside his head, and it was hurting him. Holland’s stats with the Nats were not just ‘better’, they were outstanding. Same with Pham and the Rays. We’ll see how Fowler does this year.
BTW, Holland (with Wash.) – ERA .84 (STL 7.92), IP 21.1 (STL 25), SO 25 (STL 22), WHIP 0.891 (STL 2.24), and on and on. So far the only explanation is ‘no spring training’.
I think the obvious move is still just to sign Robertson and Miller and call it a day. Miller is my first choice.
For those saying the bullpen is full. Obviously, we can make room trading a borderliner like Gant, Mayers, or Schreve, just like we did with Tuivailala.
I like our young rotation talent in Reyes, Hudson, Gomber, Gant, and Poncedeleon and I’d prefer to *start* the year with them all on a starter plan, allowing them to shift over to the bullpen if/when someone fails or gets injured.

I believe that a lot of Miller’s issue last year was related to the knee injury. If that gets fixed up, he should be at least very good…if maybe not as dominant as he was for that three year run. But an ERA in the mid 2s, 12+ k/9, 3ish BB/9 would be worth the money if it’s not crazy.
I agree. This sounds like Luke Gregerson all over again. But if they can’t get the kind of player they need in a fair trade, then they’ve got to take a chance like this. I think two years would be reasonable with a third year vesting if performance criteria are met. I hope the Cardinals FO found some way to mitigate their risk.
Can we afford Gregerson the same confidence. If similarly aged guys have similar injuries, shouldn’t we be willing to bet that we could be adding two solid late arms. Gregerson has to be rehabbing like his career depends upon it.
