You explained your POV clearly. Thanks. It all gets down to comparing these two approaches.

How much you believe that a pre-free agent player will be motivated to play harder and better, given he is guaranteed a contract either way. The only thing that is on the table in your scenario is the amount he will earn via arbitration each year. That is it.

On the other side, the team gets cost certainty and does not have to deal with arb plus likely gets options to cover a year of two of free agency that would cost a lot more later on. If the player doesn’t pan out, they trade him away. You can argue a particular long-term contract was bad, but they haven’t been stuck by any of them in any meaningful manner.

You like the first approach. The team likes the second. So do I. But any time risk is taken, some situations will work out better than others. That doesn’t mean the entire strategy should be scrapped. As we have seen, they did not do it with higher-risk guys like Pham, Wacha, Rosenthal, Diaz, etc.

Technically a pre-free agent player isn’t guaranteed a contract because they could be non-tendered or released, although that would only happen in the most extreme of circumstances.

I understand your point of view and respect your opinion but I just see this one differently. Part of the issue is knowing the makeup of each individual player. Some players can handle certain responsibilities differently.

Padres trade Rowan Wick to the Cubs. He goes on to their 40-man roster.

DeShields played second base for the Cards in 1997 and 1998. He and Bell were teammates, with DeShields the starter and Bell a reserve.

2008 third-round draftee Niko Vasquez is still chasing his dream – in Mexico.

Wow! Another $5.75M on top of the $25M that other ball clubs have already lavished upon this rather mediocre pitcher.

I thought Ross was pretty good for the Cards, but whatever. He did not fit with the 2019 roster and is gone.

Outfielder Anthony Garcia is still out there trying, having signed a minors deal with the Giants.

After a couple of years in Korea, 1B Xavier Scruggs is at the winter meetings looking for a job.

Weird. Other than Ks, Lynn had a worse 2018 across the board compared to his 2017, but got 3 years compared to 1.

Texas really needs pitching and Lynn is usually pretty durable.

Last winter, Lynn overvalued himself by taking the qualifying offer, which really hurt his market. Notice he did not delay before coming to terms this year.

Kelly got $25 million and is not a lefty.

Cards bullpen is bad so good RP are needed!

Take another look and the young pitchers the Cardinals have and most people would agree the priority should be lefties. I am really glad they did not spend $25 million on Kelly, who has been mediocre during the regular season but was lights out in the playoffs. I wish him well in LA.

Robert Stock seems to be poised to become pretty valuable for the Padres.

Stock isn’t eligible for arbitration until 2022. Granted he is 29 now.
