I would sign Nicasio ASAP. I thought he looked very good. Not sure I would want him as a closer but he would be a great 8th inning guy at a minimum, assuming we are assigning roles to our relievers.
Kudos to Strasbburg. He stepped up under pressure and got the job done. Hopefully the Nats can shut the door on the Cubs tonight but I kind of doubt they will considering the Nats have NEVER won a playoff series.
Kudos to the Yankees also. Coming back 0-2 against an Indians team that hardly lost at all in September is amazing. I figured the Yankees were a year away from really making some noise but here they are. They have a tremendous young core just like the Cubs.
As a side note, I don’t know if Matt Holliday even played at all in the series. He got off to a very good start this season and people were fretting that we made a mistake by not bringing him back. Well we didn’t. Same with Matt Adams. He got off to a hot start with the Braves then went back to reality. We shouldn’t grade transactions after a couple of weeks. I know that I am guilty of it myself sometimes.
Technically I think transactions can begin five days after the World Series has concluded.
The Winter Meetings are December 10-14 but transactions can occur before and after they are over.
I might also add that we already have a Trades, Transactions,etc… thread at the top. That might be more appropriate instead of starting a new thread.

I would go with Longoria and Archer because of team control and Archer teamed with CMart, Reyes, and Weaver would be dynamic.
I would go with Hosmer and Ozuna minus Piscotty. Although I would rather have Yelich than Ozuna.
Also, I think Grichuk has more value than Piscotty. Not even close in my book.
1. Young dynamic starter (Archer)
2. Middle order bat (Donaldson, Martinez, Bruce, etc..)
3. Beef up bullpen (Nicasio, Hand, Davis?)
4. Trade surplus redundant parts (long list here but could include Piscotty, Grichuk, Gyroko, Carp, Fowler)
5. Beef up defense up the middle (a priority to move Fowler to LF, Pham or Sierra or Bader to CF, and
inquire about Simmons at SS)
6. Solidify staff
7. Innings eater starter (many choices depending on retirements but could be Lackey, Dickey, Colon, etc..)The Nationals are facing elimination and Strasburg is refusing to pitch today on normal rest because he is feeling “under the weather”. That is unbelievable!! They have NEVER won a playoff series and he can’t go because he has a head cold. (I really don’t know his ailment but it can’t be that serious since he said he could pitch in Game 5).
Do you think Chris Carpenter would have missed an elimination game because of something like that?
I think Jag has it about right on Rosey. I would offer him a 2 year $9M deal. Pay him $2M in 2018 and $7M in 2019. If we bring Nicasio back, add another piece, and have Rosey by September that could be a nice bullpen going down the stretch.
If the Astros can get solid pitching from guys other than Verlander and Keuchel they will be hard to beat. Their lineup is ridiculous.
Nationals have two pitchers throw no hit baseball for half of the game and they lose both games. Pitiful. They are toast, once again.
I really wish the Cardinals would stop offering their younger players long term contracts. Rarely does it work.
Wong- The first couple of years were terrible. He put up good numbers this year but was hurt too often.
C. Martinez- I would argue that contract hasn’t been worth it so far. His peripheral numbers are pretty good but when it comes to crunch time he has not performed as an ace. He is a number 2 starter at best.
Piscotty: That contract has obviously been a mistake so far. Maybe he can turn it around but we are paying him much more than we had to for only hope. Is he the next Allen Craig?
Lynn: Overall not a bad value. 2 of 3 years were good with one TJ year.
Craig: Let’s not forget him. That contract was a disaster. Luckily the Red Sox bailed us out.
Why not just allow the young players go year to year in arbitration and make them earn the dollars? I get the cost certainty argument but too often these youngsters sign on the dotted line then start to fizzle. It can’t be a coincidence.

Back to the topic of this thread, I think Mo and the FO will take action this winter, if for no other reason, out of fear. They don’t fear the Cubs but I think they fear our own fan base. People vote with their pocketbooks. Yes, we had 3.4M in attendance this past year, but as Brian pointed out, there were many discounted tickets in that figure. Also, TV viewership was down.
While the new TV revenue will be great, the FO knows they have to do something or season ticket sales will plummet and tv viewership will continue to decline.
As a side note, I think another factor that we don’t talk about much is the role of Girsch. I know MO is still higher in the food chain but Girsch will probably start to assert himself more into the decision making process and that should be a positive thing. Why? I don’t know exactly, but based on some of his comments and reading up on him a bit, I just have a gut feeling that Girsch is a more aggressive guy than Mo and that eventually his ideas will win the day. I can only hope.
Brian, refresh my memory on how to quote a poster’s comments in my own post. I have forgotten how to do it.
Mud- FYI, Zimmerman is 1B for the Nats. I think their 3B is Rendon.
Chitown- I agree with all of your proposals except the part of giving up Reyes for Archer. To me that defeats the purpose of getting Archer. We need to come up with a package that doesn’t include Reyes or Weaver. I know, easier said than done.
We won’t beat the Cubs by outslugging them but we might be able to beat them with a young dynamic rotation, something they don’t have, at least yet.

Cargo or Bruce would be similar to the Berkman and Beltran acquisitions and those turned out well. Also, if you read my post again you will notice that I said add Cargo or Bruce AND Donaldson.

Why not go for Nicasio and Betances? That would be a good 1-2 punch.
As for Archer, I’m convinced the Cubs will go after him because they are losing Arrieta and Lackey. They could go big and offer Schwarber and Russell or Happ for Archer and Colome. Would the Rays want more? I don’t know but if the Cubs start dangling players like that then the only way we could match the offer would be to offer Reyes and I wouldn’t want to do that.
I would vote no on acquiring Stanton. That contract will be an albatross. I would prefer a cheaper veteran bat like Cargo or Bruce. Get either one of them plus Donaldson then you have the making of a nice lineup.
Miami’s marketing department might want as many good Latin players as possible, especially Cuban players. We could offer them Diaz and Adolis Garcia plus some others for a quality piece.
I think all 8 teams remaining have a legitimate argument that they could win it all. I don’t remember many years when it is this wide open. Having said that I will stick with my original picks. I got both WC games correct at least.

I am assuming the Jays really don’t want to trade Donaldson. They seem to be one of those teams that have a hard time facing reality because they feel like they are a contender every year. If that is the case then we would have to do an extreme over pay to get him.
Is it really worth it to send all of the players the Jays will want, plus pay his arbitration salary of at least $20M if not more, for just ONE YEAR? Maybe he will sign a long term deal with us eventually but what if he doesn’t?
Mo and Girsch need to think long and hard about this one.
