Agree with your sentiments Bw and hawk.
Was listening to Boras a couple days ago and he was espousing the likelihood of collusion due to the fact that, (a) teams needed players, (b) there were good players available, and (c) owners have the “ability” to pay the prices they’re asking. Part (c) makes me laugh. I have the “ability” to pay my neighbor’s son $500 to mow my lawn, but I’m not going to do it. Maybe the owners are finally showing some good sense and discipline on the long-term deals. And maybe it is due to the data and analytics available to them. Metrics-based decisions are often how billionaires become billionaires in the corporate world….making buy/sell decisions based on numbers that back them up.
The pen is a known problem area, as someone stated above,and it’s now “more known” than in previous years. Mo either has his hands tied, or is okay with the continuation of the downward trend, or is going to show everybody what a great poker player he is before the start of the season.
Here’s a question for anyone with insight to Machado’s performance drop in 2017, especially the first half (I didn’t see the Os play much at all in 17). I’ve read and heard it attributed to some degree to being unlucky (BABIP). I’m also wondering if defenses figured some things out and made adjustments in positioning, and Machado didn’t re-adjust quickly and even at all. Or did the pitching book on him change significantly? Regardless, I’m not in favor of giving up two top level prospects for one year.

Or at least I think it is because I’ve developed similar thoughts the last few weeks about how Miami would react when Stanton does the predictable and tries to drive them into a relatively unfavorable deal at this juncture. They’ve pretty much said so. They don’t have to pull his trigger now.

Yep, this game is something else, just like the other games. Springer just made a critical error in the 7th to allow the Dodgers to take a 1-run lead. How many outs will Roberts call on Jansen to get tonight. He’s already bringing Morrow in for the 7th and he previously said he would be unavailable.
Wow, as I was typing that, Springer just blasted Morrow’s first pitch to tie the game. Gotta feel good for him to atone for his mistake in CF. Unbelievable. I really need to go to bed (East coast) but I don’t think I will!
Darling’s incessant criticism of the overrule was one-sided to say the least. He argued the rule was silly and on that particular play, it robbed Contreras of a great athletic play. He did admit by the letter of the rule it was a correct call. The problem with taking that position is that if the Posey incident never happened, then Culberson’s mentality would be to blast Contreras into next week on a plate collision. If he did that, then there would’ve been very little chance at getting him out.
In reality, the rule did what it was intended, it prevented a plate collision. If the rule does not get enforced when one side or the other violates it, then it will cease to be an effective deterrent for plate collisions.
I happen to dislike the plate collision rule, but you can’t argue against it on that particular play like Darling did without acknowledging the play might also have a different outcome if the runner was also allowed to play it old-school style.
Matt Wieters has just had the worst inning ever by a catcher in the history of baseball…and the inning isn’t over yet.
We’re not that far off, considering the last two years in isolation. However, the trend line doesn’t look good. Hoping that changes without significant transactions is high risk. Standing pat will probably reach a deeper bottom. We need more sure bets.
Embarrassing finish to the season for the Cards. I wonder if Mo and Mike refer to Theo and Joe as their daddies? I can’t wait to see some shrewd wheeling and dealing by Mo over the next few months.
BlackHillsCard, I know about Nicasio. I was being sarcastic, that’s why I added “….gulp” at the end of that statement. You can tell, I’m sure, that I’m not happy with Mo’s less than adequate performance the last couple years.
Correct, we need more Nicasios. At least Mo got us one piece that’ll come in real handy IF we make the playoffs….gulp.
Also, you can’t bring in Cecil, Duke, Bowman, and Sherriff because their ERAs are worse than Oh’s. Plus, you can’t start Gant if you want to make the playoffs either.
Our starters have combined for 3 and 2/3 innings the last two games. Matheny’s got some splaining to do….right. I get that Matheny makes many curious moves or non-moves with the pen, but this mess we’ve witnessed this weekend is not of his doing. I’ve seen Matheny criticized for leaving starters in too long and overworking the pen…in one post by the same poster. There were no right answers this weekend — Mo (the guy who got promoted) has made sure of that.
Case in point: Matheny just trotted out $30 million dollars of failure to the mound after Oh’s bad inning. Cecil gave up a room service batting practice location pitch on his first pitch that got jacked. Cards down 4-1. Oh, this roster we have…..
At some point, Matheny has to trot a few of these duds out to the mound. Mo hasn’t given him many good pieces to work with. Matheny does far too many curious things for my liking, but I don’t understand why Mo doesn’t catch more heat for his failures the last couple years.
Starting with this game, there are eight more to go. These remaining games are virtual playoff games for us and the other two WC contenders.
DeJong with a rough sequence. He can’t start a routine DP, then kills an inning a few minutes later by hitting into a DP. Gotta be better at winning time, especially against bad teams.
