Which partially only leads me to wonder how much of what we here is just white noise to confuse people, as there’d be no way to know if the same teams would make it back to that point in the playoffs the next year, and if he wanted those teams then why not just say so from the start and all…
December 8, 2017 at 3:07 pm #39013Saw an article over on msn about that Stanton hasn’t ruled out a trade to SF or the Cards, there’s so many different reports that now you can’t figure out which ones to believe, but now with Ohtani going to the Angels perhaps Stanton will follow suit in making his decision, not to go to the Angels just to make his decision, and the other trades can get started…
December 8, 2017 at 4:49 pm #39015Cards are out on Stanton, winning not all that important to him I guess….hope he rots in Miami.
December 8, 2017 at 4:57 pm #39016This may be for the best. Problem is I don’t trust plan B , C, or D.
December 8, 2017 at 4:59 pm #39017CARDINALS ISSUE STATEMENT REGARDING PURSUIT OF GIANCARLO STANTON
ST. LOUIS, Mo., December 8, 2017 – St. Louis Cardinals Chairman and CEO Bill DeWitt, Jr., and President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak issued the following statements on the club’s potential acquisition of Miami Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton:
“We had an agreement to acquire Giancarlo Stanton from the Miami Marlins, subject to him waiving his no-trade clause. We have been notified that he will not waive his no-trade clause to come to St. Louis. While we are disappointed in his decision, we will continue to make every effort to improve our club for the upcoming season,” said DeWitt.
“Unfortunately we were not able to convince Stanton to waive his no-trade clause and join the Cardinals. We felt this was a great landing spot for him, but it was not meant to be,” said Mozeliak
December 8, 2017 at 5:12 pm #39018Will they win more that 83 games in 2018? I doubt it.
December 8, 2017 at 5:24 pm #39019For pity’s sake, nate! Quit pressing the rewind button on your Debbie Downer tape. It’s not even timely, at this point.
December 8, 2017 at 5:24 pm #39020The Cards have a plethora of Plan B options that won’t mortgage our future. We will be fine. I’m glad this is over so we can move on to more important things instead of wasting our time and breath on a guy who was never going to come here.
Let’s get busy!
December 8, 2017 at 5:32 pm #39023Glad it’s over.
December 8, 2017 at 5:39 pm #39027I offer my take to close out the Stanton discussion, at least for me.

December 8, 2017 at 6:10 pm #39034From Morosi:
BREAKING: Giancarlo Stanton has used no-trade clause to reject agreed-upon trade to #SFGiants.
December 8, 2017 at 6:22 pm #39036Now we just hope that he doesn’t go to the Cubs, though if he goes to the Dodgers they’ll have to pay out the wazoo for him…
December 8, 2017 at 6:26 pm #39037lol Giants out to hope Stanton gets to rot in Miami on a few 100+ loss teams he
Deserves itDecember 8, 2017 at 6:32 pm #39038With Stanton out there really is not a impact bat the cards can get so pretty much the big needs won’t be filled and next year will be repeat of last
December 8, 2017 at 6:46 pm #39039NJ315
ParticipantBut aren’t full NTC exactly to be used like Stanton did. He had one and he used it. I would think the Yankees before the Dodgers or Cubs. But even if it is the Cubs who cares? Go to plan B. I don’t think anybody really thought he was coming to the Cardinals. The writing was on the wall.
December 8, 2017 at 6:49 pm #39040Donaldson would help. Get another bat on top of him and we will improve.
Honestly I think the cards are their own worst enemy right now. They’ve created a culture of replaceable parts and young talent but can’t seem to attract big names most likely because they aren’t replaceable.
Fowler? Leake? Replaceable. Stanton? Not so much.
For all we know stanton will never have another year like last. But right now this stings.
December 8, 2017 at 7:06 pm #39041My fear is that now we’ll get some nobody that the front office will give out the same old spiel about how this new guy fits in better with our way of doing things or the coaching staff and some crap like that…then this next season we miss the playoffs again, if that happens the whole front office should be out the door…
And no to Donaldson, he’d cost to much for how long he’d be on the team and then leave via free agency…I fear that by the time we wise up and get rid of Mo and his whole little group they’ll have run the team into the ground and it’ll take 5-10 years to get a good team again because of them…
December 8, 2017 at 7:22 pm #39042I agree Logan I have zero faith in this front office
December 8, 2017 at 7:50 pm #39043The only way I’d be okay with Donaldson is if the Blue Jays grant the FO a window to work out a contract extension.
There are some choice words I won’t post here but for him to take as long as he did for a flat no to both teams is ridiculous!
December 8, 2017 at 8:05 pm #39045Unless we make several changes we’ll miss the playoffs again and trading for guys on the wrong side of 30 isn’t a good idea, otherwise it’s nothing more than a life preserver that the front office hopes spurs the team on to do well enough that they get to keep their jobs for another year and nothing else…
December 8, 2017 at 8:10 pm #39046My hope is this Stanton situation can work in favor for the Cardinals. A lot of reporters are acting like Miami is going to be forced to unload Stanton to one of the four teams on his reported list. I do not think that is the case. We will see what happens, but Miami has more leverage in this than some of these reports indicate.
Personally, if I was Miami, I wouldn’t deal him unless I get a deal equal to what San Francisco or St. Louis was offering. The whole point of trading Stanton was the salary relief. These reports are saying Miami will be forced to trade him to one of these teams with bad contracts coming in return. I do not understand why they they think that. Miami knew they would not get player value back in a Stanton deal. The only reason they are trying to move him is to get his contract off the books. But, they do not have to shed his money. I know everyone acts like Stanton is a $295 million player, but he isn’t for Miami. For Miami, he’s a three year, $90 million player because of that opt out. Miami has announced their rebuild. They are not planning on winning for a couple years.
If I was a Miami executive, I would tell Stanton he has two options. Either play here until that opt out is available, which means you will need to perform for those three years to have any hope of getting another deal at 30; or you go to a team willing to take on the bulk of your remaining contract. Miami can shed payroll other ways, i.e. deal the majority of the major league roster and enter next year with $30M for Stanton and about $50M for 24 other players. In terms of rebuilding, they will get more prospect value out of moving Yelich, Ozuna, Bour and Realmuto, then they will moving Stanton.
And the idea of taking on bad contracts like Adrian Gonzalez, Jacoby Ellsbury, etc., just to get Stanton out of town makes no sense. Where is the value to Miami? They still have too much payroll, they don’t get any quality prospects to quicken their rebuild and they will still have to deal the Yelich, Ozuna, etc.
I think Stanton ends up back in Miami and trade discussions remain until either the deadline or next winter. Miami can get crappy old players with slightly cheaper contracts for Stanton next year. Again, for Miami this is not about shedding $295M. This is about shedding three years, $90M without needing to completely gut the roster this year.
For the Cardinals, this could work out. If Miami has to pursue other avenues to shed payroll, maybe they can get Yelich. Reports indicated Miami wanted to hold on to him if they could move Stanton. Maybe they can swing a deal for Yelich and Bour, add a couple quality bats and still have some money to spend on the bullpen and be in a position to hit the packed free agent market next off-season. Additionally, maybe this is the major wake up call DeWitt and Co. needs to realize something is wrong with the Cardinals. Players are not jumping at the opportunity to play in St. Louis and DeWitt and Mo need of figures out why and address it.
December 8, 2017 at 8:29 pm #39048KylMss, good post. Or at least I think it is because I’ve developed similar thoughts the last few weeks about how Miami would react when Stanton does the predictable and tries to drive them into a relatively unfavorable deal at this juncture. They’ve pretty much said so. They don’t have to pull his trigger now.
December 8, 2017 at 8:46 pm #39049What concerns me is that MO/Girsch end up with Longoria( who is not a bad player but Gyorko can come close offensively).Longoria has a big salary and Cards can use the money on a FA and not cost extra players.Abreu will cost a bunch player/prospects. I wouldn’t be thrilled with Jay Bruce but he still is a run producer and is okay defensively.I just can’t figure who the Cards could trade for to be a impact bat.Not counting Ozuna,Yelich,Donaldson,Abreu.Anyone got any big bats available?
December 8, 2017 at 9:38 pm #39050My take is not at fatalistic as some posters…
– The front office aggressively pursued Stanton. He had a short list of cities, and St Louis was not one. I cannot blame the front office for a players preference.
– The Cards have missed on landing a few “big fish” over the past few seasons. In some cases, it worked to the clubs advantage (e.g. David Price, Jason Heyward).
So, I am going to sit back and see the next steps the front office takes. They gave options and they have payroll. I am not willing to close the door on the upcoming season so soon.
December 8, 2017 at 9:55 pm #39052I think that’s a good route to take 1964. I also think the Marlins could still match up well with Miami, as Goold and others have reported. Looking at the payroll, the Cardinals could save the Marlins close to $30M next year by taking on Ziegler, Yelich and Prado. It might be worth one year of Ziegler and two years of Prado to get five of Yelich in CF.
They have some other guys they may look to unload, too. Derek Dietrich is projected to make $3.2M next year and Justin Bour is projected at $3.5M.
I am also curious to see who the Cardinals have been eying in free agency. This Stanton thing has been a lot of work for nothing, but fortunately the free agent market has been essentially silent. The Cardinals have been connected to Eric Hosmer. I think Logan Morrison would be an interesting option at 1B. Left handed power who played college ball in Kansas City.
