Agreed, bling. 70 fewer roster spots and two teams worth of playing time gone are huge. That puts more pressure on scouting even before player development can engage. It would be rare for a high schooler to be able to step right into Low-A. That means there is no choice but the one FCL team, which also has to assimilate all the international arrivals. A number of orgs have more than one US complex team, but not the Cardinals.
But, hey, lots of money was saved (or more accurately, used under pressure to increase the salaries of those who remain).
December 19, 2023 at 3:31 pm #240046I’ve often wondered why MLB failed to publicly disclose it’s initial 2013 investment in DraftKings until almost two years after it’s decision to get involved with the upstart venture. Anytime I’m made aware of something like that, I can’t help but to think something shady was going on. At any rate, the term “MLB draft” has taken on a new meaning with me ever since the owners of Big League baseball teams decided it was time to invest in the organized sports bookmaking business. They should call their joint venture, “A.R. Enterprises”…For old time’s sake.
December 19, 2023 at 3:36 pm #240049My guess would be, “How do we get in on this gambling thing quietly so when it becomes acceptable by the mainstream, we will already have our fair share of the pie?”
December 19, 2023 at 3:57 pm #240051Haha!…I’d say we’re both good guessers, BW. They should have simply stuck their hand in the pie way back in 1919…As our old friend Lawrence would say, “It’s like deja vu all over again’…
December 19, 2023 at 5:34 pm #240057As of now, the Cardinals have the 7th and 82nd picks to start the draft after losing their 2nd round pick. Losing the 2nd round pick means they’ve also lost about $1.8M in their bonus pool. That’s on top of the roughly $1M they lost dropping to 7th from 5th in the lottery. The 82nd pick could drop to 83rd if Bellinger signs with a different team before the draft. Oof
December 19, 2023 at 5:42 pm #240058I could see the team signing Hader as the cheapest option and forfiet the next pick, too.
December 19, 2023 at 5:44 pm #240059Cheapest among Monty, Snell, and Hader. Two nice middle relievers at a total of 3 @ 45 million versus Hader could make Hader seem affordable if his market isn’t there.
December 19, 2023 at 8:09 pm #240070The problem with Hader is he has made a lot of appearances and the guy was terrible in 2022; if he reverts back some you are stuck with a long term deal with a lot of money tied up each yearβ¦.itβs a pretty risky move with the Cardinals budget and Dollar Bills penchant for spending

ParticipantHader would be a terrible pickup imo. I’d much rather get two $10M guys.

jj-cf-stlParticipantAre the secondary choices really there? Matsui may be off the board. Need two nexts, for 20mil Alex.
January 10, 2024 at 10:48 am #241180I ran across this a couple of weeks ago from a poster on VEB. I can’t confirm if his reasearch methods are legit but if they are it does seem to confirm that the Cardinals draft and developing department has been good for quite some time.
It also confirms the same for the Dodgers. I know that is a controversial subject but that was always the basis for my Cardinal-Dodger comparisions, not payroll.
Anyway, hopefully we can cash in on the 2024 draft.

Konnor Griffin has been my pick for the Cardinals for quite a while at #7. Especially, if Chase Burns is off the board. Whoβs your choice?

Chase Burns.
March 30, 2024 at 4:35 pm #245611I still regret that we had to burn a pick by signing a player with a QO. Two years in a row we have done this but this one especially stings since we have our highest draft position in over a decade.
April 2, 2024 at 10:31 am #246126I have to put a plug in for a local guy from the U of Arkansas I have seen pitch twice this year in person. His name is Hagen Smith and one of the most dominant collegiate pitchers I have seen in several years. So far in 2024 his stats are :
W/L: 5-0
ERA: 1.54
IP: 35.0
BB: 10
SO: 72Yes that is 72 strikeouts in 35 innings and that is against decent competition as well. Against Oregon St. he struck out 17 in 6 IP. That would be 17 out of 18 batters got the K.
The Cardinals should give him high consideration with the 7th overall pick.

Our Team of the Year fittingly has our Pitcher of the Year as he spearheads the premier pitching staff in the nation. Hagen Smith, the 6-3/225 LHP from Bullard, TX has positioned himself as the potential first arm to go off the board in this yearβs MLB Draft. His ability to miss barrels and eliminate opponents scoring threats by stacking together multiple clutch pitches together in succession has helped him keep his flawless record. Smith has used his mid-to-upper 90s fastball that explodes on hitters and his abrupt, mid-80s slider to finish both lefties and righties alike. Having made 7 starts, he is (5-0) with a 1.54 ERA over 35.0 IP where he has only allowed 16 hits, good for a .136 OBA. He has a sparkling 72:10 strikeout-to-walk ratio and is averaging over 2 punchouts per inning. Smith is the ace of the best team in the nation and the Razorbacks have it all going in the right direction for now.
April 5, 2024 at 7:13 am #246623GScott, those are definitely some video game numbers!
However, Iβm still on the Konnor Griffin bandwagon. With hopefully only one pick this high for a long while, they canβt screw this up and the risk of a pitcher failing or getting hurt is greater.
That being said, if Hagen Smith is called, I will not be upset by any means.

stlcard25ParticipantIt seems likely that Smith will pitch himself above our draft slot.
April 5, 2024 at 9:33 am #246627Bryce Rainer. 18, high schooler, SS & Pitcher. Tremendous upside. Has played some third. I could see Cards taking him and he’s our third baseman post-Nado.
I think he’s a big kid at 6’3″ & 195.
Of course, I’m on the Hagen Smith bandwagon, but he’s pitched hi
Self into the top 5 I would guess.April 5, 2024 at 5:54 pm #246690I fear that both Smith & Burns throw too hard & have too good stuff for the Cards to consider either. I fear that if they go pitching, it will be Santucci or Hartle. Love control and pitchability…strikeouts be damned!
April 5, 2024 at 5:57 pm #246692I fear that both Burns & Smith throw too hard & have too good of stuff for the Cards to consider them. If they go pitching, I fear that it will be Santuccu or Hartle. Control & pitchability. Who really wants strikeouts or front of the rotation guys??
April 15, 2024 at 4:30 pm #248131Not sure if my favorite pick for the Cardinals, Konnor Griffin, will make it to #7. He’s been climbing in some mocks. However, with quite a few outstanding position prospects available, the Cardinals may get a chance at one of the two top starting pitchers. Chase Burns or Hagen Smith.
April 18, 2024 at 6:30 am #248548i just hope moe doesn’t get too involved and screw it up
April 18, 2024 at 7:05 am #248550I really wish MLB allowed picks to be traded. A record of 9-10 after that first road trip is better than I expected, but I still donβt think they can make a real playoff run without another 1A/1B starter so loading up on draft picks wouldnβt be an awful idea.
For example, Contreras (who I am a huge fan of) at 9M per WAR is a very valuable asset. He was worth over 30M last year while most of us werenβt watching and had given up on the season and is on pace to out perform that this year. I see him as the 1B/backup C/DH in 2025 to get his bat in there everyday.
I personally do not see Goldy being a Cardinal in 2025, so trading him for a decent pick in June is great for interest in the game and for organizations looking to make a run.April 18, 2024 at 7:18 am #248553My understanding is that MLB does not allow trading of draft picks to protect teams from themselves. The risk is mortgaging the future by clearing the decks of future picks. Yet other sports such as the NFL allow it and there are some very interesting trades as teams maneuver up or down in the draft.
April 18, 2024 at 8:22 am #248558The baseball draft seems to be way more of a crap shoot than the NFL draft. The only picks really worth anything for sure (in my opinion) are top 10 1st rounders kinda like the NBA (which only has 2 rounds now).
After that it’s pretty hard to tell if and when a guy will ever pan out.
Maybe baseball could allow only 2nd round or later picks to be traded and still feel that it is protecting ownership from themselves…
