Playoff baseball is fun. It’s more fun when the Cardinals are in and advancing but I’ve gotten used to them stinking so… Lol

I want Walker to spend the ENTIRE 2026 season in AAA unless he tears the cover off the ball and is a AAA all-star. He’s really young and that’s about all he has going for him at this point.
Gorman is 2-3 years older and he’s just not a good hitter. I don’t really want to see him in StL next year.
Ok so, Contreras stays at 1b. That frees Burleson up to move to rf to replace Walker. I’d sure try to make a lf out of Herrera. Donovan can play third can’t he? Sagesse / Wetherhold is 2b. Winn of course has ss nailed down.
We can trade Nootbar for pitching or keep him I guess.
If Herrera is moved back to c then we still need a rh outfielder.
I can’t begin to unravel the starting pitching. I assume Gray is gone, I hope Mikolas is gone, Pallante just has to go to the pen. I think we need 3 SPs from somewhere….
If Arenado and Contreras are traded the infield will be wobbling badly.
A sad ending to a sad season. Yes – I understand there is one more game tomorrow but it’s about as meaningless as is possible.
Agree with Jnevel other than I would move Burleson to the Bright Spot list.
Gorman and Walker –> I absolutely don’t want either of those guys anywhere near StL next season. Maybe they can be roomies in Memphis?
So, Leahy will get the start in a bullpen game. I guess they are going to try to make him one of the five SPs for 2026?
I guess that’s ok as plan C but I hope they have a Plan A and B before they just hand him the spot.
What happened to the integrity of the game? These games are still meaningful for the Cubs aren’t they?
If the Cards can work out a deal to move Arenado I’d be in favor of it but if they cannot and 2026 begins with him as the third baseman that wouldn’t be the worst thing ever because he’s not blocking anyone right now and the team will be paying most of his salary anyway even if he is traded.
If we had someone ready to step up and play 3rd base I’d feel differently but the truth is he’s still the best we have and it’s not even close.
I suppose the situation could change but seriously, who do we have to put at third base that’s better right now? Gorman isn’t better than or even equal to Arenado at the plate or in the field. Fermin? Nah. Anybody else? Maybe move Donovan over there if we don’t need him at 2b or the of?

No winners only losers on both sides of those deals but Bill did save some cash so there is that.
If Gray wants out it’s best to figure out how to make that happen.
The franchise may have to go backwards to move forward. I don’t really want to hear that or think about that after the past decade of mostly futility but – that may very well be the position they are in.
There are reasons to think 2026 could be really rough and there are also reasons to think it might be the beginning of the climb back to being an actual contender.
If Doyle is Skenes and Wetherholt is great those 2 alone added to the (more or less) projected 2026 roster would likely be the WC3.

3 games left against the Cubs but we all know the off-season for StL actually started when they shut down Winn and then Contreras – which is fine by the way.
I feel like the position players for next year are pretty well set less the excess ones they trade away and then they hopefully add a rh power bat to the outfield. An actual MOTO bat to build a line up around.
I think they have plenty to choose from to assemble a decent bullpen too.
The starting rotation is the biggest mystery for me. Based on recent comments it looks like Gray is adios so that would leave only Liberatore and McGreevy from 2025 as locks for 2026.

Unlike other sports, except for really really rare players like Paul Skenes, even top 10 baseball picks can take a few years to reach and impact the big league club.
The draft is pretty much a crap shoot. It’s a game of numbers. Sign dozens of players to minor league contracts, start cranking the handle on your minor league system, and see what it spits out of AAA on an annual basis.
As barren and bereft as the Cardinals system has been it will now take 2-3 years to get it back up to speed – it just will – but it’s the only way to consistently fill out a major league roster AND have the trade capital to go get 3-4 proven ML players to turn a good roster into a great one.
But you must have the machine in place to internally create the good roster before you can trade it into a great one.
The Cardinals still being ‘in’ the playoff hunt just shows how bloated the current # of teams that get in is.
It would not surprise me if WC 4 and WC 5 are added along with the upcoming league expansion.
If that happens it will be possible for entire divisions to be ‘playoff teams’ and being 82-80 would almost certainly get a team in.

I don’t know that Arenado WILL be gone but he should be unless he just hates to win.
His dumb ass could be playing in Houston right now instead of once again playing out the string in another non-playoff season.
2026 in StL may not be a whole lot different than 2023-25. Certainly the team will not be a sexy pick to even make the playoffs much less be an actual title contender.

Personally I don’t mind if he stays, since the Cards will be eating a large chunk of his salary AND Gorman appears to be a pedestrian at best 3b.
Even an aging Arenado will likely still hit better than anyone else we can put at the hot corner and will certainly play better D.
I hope that as the product on the field has gone down the toilet that – at the very least – DeWitt understands the compounding errors he has made or allowed to be made.
It took several years; maybe even a decade, to bring the organization to the state it currently sits in.
Bill is reaping what he has sown and it appears that it’s going to be this way for awhile.

You never know – they could score 10 runs today but – 162 games with about this lineup would lose 110 games, lol
5-9 is as bad as I’ve ever seen.
It just all feels so hopeless right now. I realize it’s not as bad as it seems and a couple of years from now the team could be flying high. It just doesn’t feel like it at the moment.
I had forgotten about Koperniak. Why spend money on a FA of when you can just bring up a AAAA player on the cheap? The only issue is – he hits LH, lol.
