you could make an argument that Mautz has been the 2nd best lefty reliever this spring, but it is a real concern the # of guys he lets on base
Mautz is 6 1/3, 5 hits and 5 walks, 2 earned runs this spring…he has pitched multiple innings and every 5 days so he may be a starter in AAA or AA
Raquet might be the leader for the #2 bullpen lefty….that role seems unsettled
Gorman and Walker are having absolutely putrid springs so far and as the rosters are cut down they will be facing better and better pitching.

I beg to differ on Gorman, ZTR. The above line stats don’t show it, but he’s having a pretty solid spring. Nothing to be concerned about. Walker on the other hand still looks like he’s guessing on most every pitch. He may be a little better now at laying off some sliders, but that’s about it.
Interesting that Crooks was optioned to AAA today. He appeared to be playing well.

I agree it is early, but I’ve observed and said since I got down here that he is not part of the big 3.
That affects more than Crooks. I was hoping Crooks would be the starter with Pages backing up. Pozo could be hp and down to the Memphis shuttle. Based upon the spring Crooks has had it sounds that planned to have Crooks playing every day at Memphis, and Bernal at Springfield. Also a long shot is Rodriguez making it to Springfield by the end of the year. This of course would have to be after promotions above him.
I have reported that Bernal has also played some first base this spring, as has Pozo. Bernal is ready for Triple-A and this could help him and Crooks fit on the same Memphis roster.
Brian, that’s interesting. Is Jordan still going to play some at the hot corner? Between dh, 1b, and catcher there should be plenty of playing time.
They need to find somebody who has one too many promising young outfielders and break up the log jam.
Gorman has 3 hits 2 of which are bombs.
Small sample size but after today’s game his BA is under .200
I mean yeah, one 3 for 4 game might right that ship.
I’m not watching the games – is he taking great at bats and just been a bit unlucky on balls put in play?

Yes, at least he is during spring. Lots of good info here for subscribers.
Madris may also be in the 1B mix, though he is listed as an OF this spring.

You can likely find many, many such 20 plate appearance stretches in most players stats over the course of a season as that’s not even quite a good week of games.

I don’t think so, but my opinion isn’t the one that counts. With a four-man bench, I’d rather see a stronger contributor than the third catcher. Of course, Herrera hasn’t yet proven he can stay healthy and catch regularly. Unless/until he does, this suboptimal situation may continue.
that’s not even quite a good week of games.
The guys who are going to play will start getting regular at bats this next week. Than we can over react to their spring performances.

3/9 SS at HOU 1:05 TBA Astros Radio (KMBE)ZTR – He hit one 400 feet yesterday to near straightaway center where the CFer made a nice catch. In a different park with lighter air, that’s a HR and his numbers look much better. If the CFer doesn’t make a great catch, it’s still a double and again, with the small sample size, his numbers get much better. Overall, his process looks good in the games I’ve been able to see. I’m not advocating in any way that he’s suddenly a 3.5 WAR player like he was once projected – just that he looks fine and probably will make the Nado loss be break even. He’s obviously a downgrade to Nado on defense, but I think he improves the offense enough to basically be break even.
But you’re right about Walker. As mentioned above, he is a bit better at laying off the outside sliders. And I think his overall swing mechanics may help him be better – maybe – but I’m light years from being an expert there. The problem is he consistently appears to be guessing whether a pitch will be a strike or not, which leads to lots of terrible swing decisions. Small sample size though for Spring.
When Mo moved Contreras to 1B in 25′, Herrera was viewed as the starting catcher. He caught 6 of our first 8 games, but you know the rest of his story in 25′.
Ivan’s usage as the starting catcher depends on Ivan since management has given him the consistent opportunity. 100 GS is a heavy workload on any catcher and there are throwing and workload concerns, again. I like the depth at catcher/DH.
