At least Marp’s outs are from being too aggressive, rather than caution. While he probably shouldn’t have said anything to the media, I agree with his assessment. Rosie has been good for us but it’s time he brings back some needed prospects in a trade.
I agree that the offense stunk. But the bullpen has consistently failed to win games this year. It’s not a stretch to say that it’s the one spot that is the difference between the Cards being in the hunt for, if not the division leader right now and being rightful sellers. The ERA is alright but that hardly tells the story of their ineffectiveness. They are 8-19 now, when no other bullpen in the league has fewer than 10 wins, with only the Phillies more games under .500 in the pen.
I was searching around and found this info regarding draft pick compensation:
A non-market disqualified Revenue Sharing Payee Club shall receive a selection immediately following the first round of the draft if the player signs a contract with a total guarantee of $50 million or more.
Now, I can’t find the official list but since the Cards are in the small market list for competitive balance picks, wouldn’t they be part of the “non disqualified list”? I read that the Braves and Astros now no longer are one of the revenue sharing list and that there are 13 teams left but no info on who the 13 are…?
Do the Royals even have anything the Cards would want in a trade? They have a really poor system (no top 100 guys) and I think the Cards would be fools to trade Lynn for less than a first round pick type talent, which is what they’d get by hanging on to him and letting him go with a QO, right? I hope they don’t get a Jaime Garcia yield on this one; that would stink.
Does anyone think that a bullpen next year with Hudson, Alcantara, Montgomery, Marco, Sherriff, Weaver and Tui would be much of a step down, if any, from this mess? It’s sad when your minor league options are pretty much a wash with the big league stuff.

Really disappointing to have the bullpen ruin games again and again and again. But it’s not suprising when you have a bunch of below average arms trying to patch together innings with 91 mph stuff. There are no elite arms besides Rosenthal in the bullpen. That needs to change.
Cecil immediately coughs it up. I hate this bullpen and wish we could trade them all for nothing in return.
For some reason, Lynn led off the inning at 91 pitches.

Lynn has been his typical inefficient self. Probably going to be pulled after the 5th here.
At least Garcia broke up the no hit bid.
Lynn has well outdone his peripherals this year, and hopefully he’ll be able to do the same today. The lineup isn’t quite as bad as it might look at the bottom, but the Mets aren’t throwing an ace at it either. Would be a nice game to win around 6-3.
With the Orioles going into sell mode, is there any interest in trying to grab one of their players in a trade? Certainly we could use the relief help, and Britton is the big fish…he may cost a lot but one of the setup guys may come cheaper and be a nice upgrade.
On the position side, the really big fish is Machado and despite his down season, he would still cost a mint. The plus side is he would be available for 2018 as well. In some ways he would be an even bigger upgrade than Donaldson as he could play SS. Probably would cost us at least 2, maybe 3 of Reyes, Kelly, Perez, Flaherty and a filler prospect or two. Would you do it??
I didn’t get to watch the game tonight but perhaps taking Carpenter out was a mistake. Probably would have preferred him and his bases loaded acumen over Voit in the potential game tying situation. Hopefully he wasn’t injured?
I keep hoping to see Sierra gap one to see him show off that incredible speed. I’m sure he will grow into a bit more power and we should get to see some triples. Maybe tonight, although deGrom is tough.
Delvin Perez with another couple hits. He’s doing basically what he should against GCL pitching. Hopefully he’ll be able to work his way into the organizational good graces and carry his hitting back up to Johnson City before too long.
Surprised they sent him back out for the 9th but he was feeling it. Great outing for Wacha, good to get the win. Now let’s get to .500 tomorrow.
Really good game by Wacha so far with a few really quick innings. This is the type of start we really could have used.

Well, the Dbacks system is far worse than St Louis’. It would be more like giving up Sosa, Bryce Denton and a DSL player.
Lugo is their #4 prospect, Alcantara their 15th. King is nowhere to be found but fared well in the DSL last year. The Dbacks have a pretty poor system though…Lugo was a B- guy for Sickels and Alcantara a C.
This is the kind of game the Cards need to win going away…and also the kind of game they have not done as well as hoped for this year. Without the losses to the Bronson Arroyos of the world this team would have a lot nicer record.
I think it probably has something to do with most of our upper level teams performing so well. Not many guys have really struggled, so they’ve all looked good. On the other side, the lower levels have been kind of all or nothing, on the individual performance side. This has seemed to put a big gulf between the otherwise similar prospects.
Sprinkle in some of the still high end, high risk guys like Perez, Alcantara, etc and the list comes together nicely.
I have no quibble with this list, Brian. It’s well thought out and put together.
I had posted this in a minor league thread not long ago but it bears asking again…some of these guys (thinking Junior F, Alcantara, Hicks and Hudson) just don’t seem to be striking many guys out. Do you think that is a product of them needing a little time to adjust to the level/refine their command, perhaps an organizational impetus to learn a new pitch or pitch to contact more, or is it something lacking in their stuff? All of those guys seem to have high octane stuff but the strikeout numbers just aren’t there this year (and in some cases never have been).
