5-3, final. The Cubs pull into a tie for first and the Cards fall further into 4th, 4.5 games back.
Despite not being totally out of it, depending on the severity of the Carpenter injury I could see the sale beginning as soon as tomorrow. It’s time.
Wacha not nearly so sharp tonight as last start. It probably would have been expected after the last start. Contreras homers and puts the Cards in a very tough spot, down 5-3 and facing the Cubs bullpen again.

2017: 7-3, 94.2 IP, 3.71 ERA, 3.34 FIP, 2.1 fWARGray is being bandied about as one of the top available starting pitchers, due to his strong résumé and team control left. Yet, Wacha has been close to as good, albeit with an unknown in the injury. Gray hasn’t exactly been injury free either, with troubles the last two seasons after 200+ innings logged in 2014 and 2015.
I know illinibooyah was beating the “trade Michael Wacha” drum for a while but it’s at the point that it looks like Wacha could be an actual decent starter the next two years if his arm is right. Would it be worth exploring what he might get in a trade, or hang onto him as rotational stability in 2018-19?
Not to mention, Yadi is making $20m a year and probably is going to retire after 2020. I personally believe a chunk of the hesitance to sit Yadi has been the complete lack of a decent backup rather than Yadi demanding to catch every inning. I’m sure he’d like to play every inning, mind you, but it’s easier to sit when the dropoff in performance is 10-20% (at most) vs 50+%.
Agree. He’s currently leading the league in ERA. Now, some of that might be the graduation of guys like Flaherty and others to AAA but still pretty good. He looks like a ground ball machine. Would definitely like to see a few more strikeouts but I suspect those will come.

Looks like Lester is the one on the mound today…the lefty matchup still stands though. Quintana goes tomorrow.
With a lefty on the mound, I’d imagine we will go right heavy. Prob have Marp at 2nd and Voit at first.
Hopefully Waino will pitch well today because I think we can get a few runs off Quintana.
Oh continues to struggle. Thankfully there is a big cushion but he’s not going to be worth anything in a trade at this point.
Dejong didn’t help Carlos with that whiff on the grounder. Heyward followed with a liner to put 2 runners on with none out. Blech.
Carlos has really struggled lately…not sure if it’s focus or his weird hair or what. 5 hits already and not through the 2nd. Gonna be another tax on the bullpen if he doesn’t get it together.
Kelly is absolutely better than Fryer right now. By your own words, you say Kelly is supposed to stay in Memphis for 3-4 years before replacing Yadi. Perhaps the team has a higher view of him than you, and are giving him a shot at some big league time that could well be more beneficial than getting at bats at AAA. Besides, even if he doesn’t play much for now they can always send him back to Memphis any time in the next 3-4 years to get more time, right??
Fryer seemed to be good with the pitchers but he was a big liability with the bat. Sierra def needs more time to develop some pop. Tui has been pretty good and I hope he gets back before too long.
Really like the move with Kelly.
Isn’t the pain guy the one who is obsessed with certain arm positions that he believes lead to certain injuries? I feel like he was panning Carlos Martinez not long ago for changing his mechanics.
