Needed one of those homers from last night to be tonight. 9 hits should have netted more than a single run, but sometimes ya just don’t get the breaks. It happens but it still stinks. Hopefully Waino can secure the series win tonight.
Young Mr Carlson is still running a nearly 1-1 K:BB ratio despite his youth relative to the league. He had appeared to take a nice leap forward early in Peoria although he was in a bit of a slump when he got the promotion even. Nice to see him start to take a step ahead in Palm Beach with a nice night. Hopefully he can really get rocking soon.
Jim appears to be right. Waino will get the start Sunday, and Flaherty will come up for the game in Minnesota on Tuesday.
It would be great if Weaver were more efficient…but the Cards definitely have set themselves up to handle shorter starts. They’ll need to, because Wacha, Weaver, Flaherty, Reyes, even Waino are not exactly going to chew up innings in their starts. I wonder if we may not see some “piggyback” games through the summer where two of the bunch (throw Gant in there too) each go 4-5 innings.
Also would like to add…great power show last night! Hope to see the offense get moving by utilizing proper matchups going forward.

Martinez will be fine. He’s had bad stretches before and he’ll get back on track.
Good lineup tonight. I like the smart play with Bader and Gyorko.
Fowler looks something like a slightly below average hitter against RHP this year…92 wRC+. Marp is in a slump any way you put it, with a 78 wRC+ against RHP. Against lefties, Marp is at 30 wRC+ and Fowler…well, let’s not even go there.
I don’t think you have to jettison them to spot duty yet, simply due to their career history (I’d bet on both being above average by seasons end) but the long side of a hard platoon where they *only* face RHP for a while, and probably hit in the #6-7 hole is a good plan IMO.
Pads, I guess I just sort of assumed that Mikolas would be a free agent after 2019. Looks like we would have him under arbitration for 2021 and beyond. That’s crazy, and could be an excellent signing long term.
Reading some of these pieces after I re-upped my TCN membership. I hadn’t been following Lane Thomas much but he’s having a pretty decent season with the bat at Springfield and I enjoyed the Derek Shore piece on him. I am intrigued by Mercado’s upside and it’s interesting to see Thomas compared to him. Great stuff.
My hoped for lineup tonight:

3B Gyorko
1B Martinez
LF Ozuna
SS Dejong
RF Bader
2B Wong
C KellyExpect we’ll still see Marp and Fowler in the lineup, maybe with Wong sitting out. This will be very dumb but there will be some random justification they’ll have for it.
Definitely better to get the win than a loss, but this offense needs to get in gear. Matheny has been doing some shuffling but Carpenter, Fowler, Ozuna need to start producing or they should be hitting 6-7-8 until they get going. Fowler should have the day off against the lefty on Friday and so should Marp but we’ll see about that.
With two games against LHP, Bader absolutely needs to be starting those two games. Gyorko of course as well. No reason to have Fowler in the game when he’s hitting this horribly from the right side.
This is the one injury in the pitching staff we definitely can’t overcome. Hopefully this is just a one or two start rest for him and he’s back to 100% very soon.
If I was creating an offer for Machado, I’m front loading as much as possible and giving the now standard 2 opt outs it’s gonna look something like…

If another year in the mid $20s gets it done then go for it but he gets the big $$ early and middle and probably doesn’t kill you if get doesn’t take the opt out that you hope he would after his age 32 season. (Remember that by 2028 a 2 war guy may be worth $25M a year).
A lot of this is predicated on the idea that the Cardinals have cheap young pitching in droves along with the outfield and catcher situations set up for the next five years or so. Guys like Reyes, Weaver, Flaherty, etc on the pitching end and Pham, Bader, O’Neill, Dejong, Kelly, Knizer on the hitting side being league average to plus would allow for the $$ surplus to be applied to a star with a huge deal.
Having the SS and 3B locked down would be a big boon for this team, even if it’s a stretch to the payroll to go into the $180M+ range. But it’s not my money so I’m happy to spend it. Haha

— Kenny L.The offer was not only not made, it wasn’t even discussed by the clubs. Multiple sources told MLB.com’s Carrie Muskat that there wasn’t a shred of truth to those names surfacing in Machado trade talks, though if it were true, it would have been a deal worth considering for Baltimore.
My guess is that the Orioles were shooting for the moon and if they didn’t get it, they would see how the season went and still probably get a good ransom at the deadline.
Something like Flaherty/Hudson/Mercado would probably be what the Orioles woikd be shooting for at the deadline from St Louis. I wouldn’t want to give that, but if they would do Hicks/O’Neill and a filler I might. Not sure that would beat the Cubs offer though.
Brian, did you have “insider information” to know to be in Palm Beach or were you already planning to be there?
This is a series where the Cardinals really need to win at least three or four. Coming off the clunker with Minnesota, getting the ship righted on the road in San Diego would be a nice start. With Mikolas on the mound, I would expect them to win but the offense needs to score some runs.
I suppose if they were to trade for Machado, the best case scenario would be for them to overpay, still not win and then lose him in the offseason.
Rats, he already is an ace. The days of the Waino, ace goes 7-8 IP every start with a mid 2s ERA are over. Or at least reserved for the very very elite guys. Martinez has an ERA under 2 this year and has given us a great shot to win every one of his starts save for the first one. I’ll take it.
Tbh, if you just watched these two games you would think the Twins were in first place and the Cards were the dregs.
