Chicago writers focusing on a Cubs trade for Machado.

I suppose if they were to trade for Machado, the best case scenario would be for them to overpay, still not win and then lose him in the offseason.

they keep saying Russell would be the centerpiece or att least would be the big “chip” but outside of defense i don;t see why he is that big of deal..he only has 3yrs of cheapness remaining anyways

If the Cubs strolled up with Russell, Schwarber, and Happ…and a decent pitching prospect even if lower down

    sure

I just dont see what the Cubs can offer that would be enticing enough to Baltimore that other teams coudl counter with much easier…at least without gutting their MLB roster

Now Baez is the hot thing at the moment…and if they offered Baez Schwarber and a decent pitching prospect they’d be in the game

maybe the Cubs go big? Snag Machado and an aging but useful Adam Jones in the deal… move Russell, Schwarber, Almora, Montgomery, Butler and a pitching prospect?

Cubs’ farm is not really exciting when it comes to pitching…and i think that is the O’s primary need

A Cardinals offer of Hudson + Sosa + Oviedo/Woodford might be a much better long term offer than whatever the Cubs throw at them for Machado

Would Hudson Sosa Woodford/Oviedo be enough? I think probably not, but it might be enticing…and it might be about as far as i want to go for a rental

unless we could do the deal today or tomorrow…but if it is a trade deadline deal i’d rather take m chances without him…

UNLESS…we are going to open the wallet as wide as it takes to re-sign him…and in that case i might pay with prospects to get the performance as well as the extra couple months of negotiating…overpay if you must but dont let him hit the market IF you trade for him…

40mil per for 8 years? fine 35 for 10? fine

but you dont trade for him if you arent going to do everything it takes to re-sign him

I think the Cubs shoudl be more focused on signing Harper than trading away what might be appealing to Harper or Machado just for an extra month of MAchado

Like I mentioned in the Trade Ideas thread the Cubs are going to send Russell to Baltimore for Machado. Will it take more than Rusell? Perhaps, we shall see.

If this happens I don’t think losing Russell will hurt the Cubs much even if they don’t re-sign Machado in the offseason. Next year they could play Baez at SS and put Happ or Zobrist at 2B.

The Cubs ownership and front office are determined to win another WS before their window closes. Acquiring Machado would certainly increase their chances.

I don`t care where Machado goes as long as it is not to STLOUIS.Cost too much for a more than likely rental .Keep the kids and make smarter lesser deals if possible. There are other non-contenders who will have assets to deal as July gets closer.

I agree BW. Making a move for Machado in the offseason makes some sense but I wouldn’t give up too much for him for just two months especially since we are probably realistically only challenging for a wild card spot.

Going after someone like Beltre or Moustakas at the deadline would be much cheaper and make more sense. Maybe even Abreu since he is under control next year also.

I’d rather sign a JD Martinez type at the deadline that costs only money. I don’t see us needing anything at the moment though. I fully expect Carp, Wong, Ozuna, and Fowler to come alive by August.

We are in first place but we will realistically only being fighting for a wild card spot? You say that as if we have a bunch of guys over acheiving fight now.

So you think Hudson+Sosa+Ovieda/Woodford is better than Baez+Schwarber+prospect? Or better than Russell, Schwarber, Alomara, Montgomerry, Butler plus a prospect? (Jones would be nothing more than a salary dump for Baltimore). Talk about over valueing our prospects!

Well we are two games away from fourth place so I still think there is a good chance we end up playing for the wild card.

The last offseason signaled that teams are finally waking up, and that free agency has changed. Maybe teams are also waking up to the idea that trading the farm for a rental is a bad idea.

I do not like trading the farm for a rental, even a superstar like Machado. The only ways I would deal anyone, would be if they could be given a window in which to sign him, or if the cost of prospects could be low. But either of those things happening are probably unrealistic.

It’s easy to get pumped up over Machado. But the Cardinals aren’t going to get into a bidding war with anybody. It’s just not their style. The only chance that I could see is if, in fact, the playing field has changed as suggested by the way the last off-season went meaning that organizations start acting somewhat sensibly and honor their own pledge to stay under the threshold. Regardless, it would seem that the Cardinals could put together a pretty good package to trade for a Machado rental without hurting themselves.

The rumor was the Cubs offered Russell. Almora and Montgomery and were told no. So if that wasn’t good enough then what prospect makes it happen? I mean they really don’t have much ML ready talent. Maybe 2 years from now…

IF that Cub offer doesn’t land Machado then the O’s are not going to trade him and will let him walk for pretty much nothing…

My guess is that the Orioles were shooting for the moon and if they didn’t get it, they would see how the season went and still probably get a good ransom at the deadline.

Something like Flaherty/Hudson/Mercado would probably be what the Orioles woikd be shooting for at the deadline from St Louis. I wouldn’t want to give that, but if they would do Hicks/O’Neill and a filler I might. Not sure that would beat the Cubs offer though.

Russell seems to have stalled out in his career. He looked to be a future star, even a Machado-type player but has not done well the last year-plus. Still he makes a lot of sense in a potential deal for Machado.

St. Louis would probably need to offer DeJong and a couple of pitching prospects. O’Neill is an intriguing player as well, and one they might like to have. But my guess is they are looking primarily for pitching prospects.

Right now I would think any team making a deal for Machado would need to get a good sense that they can sign him. If not, the return Baltimore will receive is not going to be overwhelming.

Holy smokes! I can’t believe the Cubs would offer that much for a couple of months for Machado. If they did and were turned down then the Orioles are even worse ran than I imagined, which is saying something.

If the Orioles took that package from the Cubs, then got a haul for Jones, then got a haul for Bundy, then got a decent return for Brach, then got a decent return for Britton (when healthy), they could have a nice rebuild. But they will probably fritter it all away because of some pipe dream about getting back into the wild card race. They are like the scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz, “if only I had a brain.”

The Cardinals have entered plenty of bidding wars….when the player fits their desire

    Pujols
    Heyward
    Price
even Stanton (considering the size of that contract going after him via trade and obviously taking on the money counts)

The Cardinals went all in on those guys and lost out at the last minute on each of those deals///and they went past their comfort level on all three…they were trumped at the last minute for Price and Pujols…and the cubs seemed to have upped their offer late too

let’s not act like the Cardinals dont go hard after big time guys…and enter the big money sweepstakes

yes, they lost out…btu on each of those deals (Stanton not included…though it could be argued it was wise not win that sweepstakes…but jury is out on Ozuna) it looks like they ended up not only making the right call not going as far as they would have needed to…but also that those contracts each of those other teams handed out are turning out to be pretty crippling

Machado fits too well to not go after him in FA…and we have been preaching the money we have available..AND preaching that the “right” fit always gets special treatment when it comes to contracts and willingness to pursue them

we still shouldnt trade for him…unless we WOULD go way past our comfort and win no matter what…in that case a conservative deal to get him early woudl potentially be wise…but on guys Hudson level and down IMO

Wow. That’s a massive offer if so. 11 years of, not just control, but ML talent control.

I agree Pads. Even the ever aggressive Cubs wouldn’t offer that much would they? I could see the Orioles being dumb enough to turn it down though. Who is even calling the shots there? Duquette is on the way out, Showalter is on the way out (at least as manager), the Angelos sons are trying to take over from their father, what a mess…

There has been speculation that Cal Ripken might be their next manager. If so he is walking into a bad situation.

Just from a quick Google search…

Do you know if [the Cubs’] offer of [Addison Russell], [Mike Montgomery] and [Albert Almora Jr.] for [Manny Machado] was actually made to Orioles? If, so how could they turn that down? Three Major League players.
    — Kenny L.

The offer was not only not made, it wasn’t even discussed by the clubs. Multiple sources told MLB.com’s Carrie Muskat that there wasn’t a shred of truth to those names surfacing in Machado trade talks, though if it were true, it would have been a deal worth considering for Baltimore.

I am not particularly interested in Machado long term at SS. He is elite at 3B but probably below avg at short. At his price, he needs to be elite at everything.

And will he move off short willinging when he really becomes a liability? We know Matheny doesn’t have the nads to tell him otherwise (see Molina). Can you imagine an upset $30+ mm superstar on the team. No thanks. At 3B I am interested.

The Cards should acquire Machado because columnist Ortiz says so. The majority of his column identifies every prospect with St. Louis or close to it, which might be interesting for those few who did not already know who they are.
