I remember the outrage over the use of Wacha who like Hudson and Flaherty had minimal recent action. If Flaherty had came in and gave up the dinger Shildt would have still been just as stupid in the minds of those who were steamed because we didn’t hire someone like Terry Francona (who by the way has won fewer games than Shildt since the day Mike was hired).

I think the Cardinals came together because 1) The additions of the vet pitchers filled the gap probably beyond what most expected and 2) The young outfielders and Edman matured and suddenly the Cardinals had a lineup that could hurt you at any time or any place in the lineup. Probably that also relieved some of the pressure from Arenado and Goldschmidt so they didn’t have to carry the whole offense.

Think the Cardinals erred by not sending Flaherty to Memphis. Batting facing a couple of teammates is not the same as facing hitters in competition.

Thought both Flaherty and Hudson looked a little short on their normal fastballs. Hopefully they will get a couple of outings before the end of the season.

Did the article say specifically that the Cardinals had Wong do that he quit doing? I am concerned about all of the pitcher injuries and that goes back all the way to Matheny. I am more concerned about the inconsistent offense. I would say change hitting first.

Don’t know who is to blame for the young relievers (Cabrera, Gallegos and Reyes) hitting the wall. I count 7 games lost by relievers since August 1 where we were tied or in the lead going into the late innings.

So far Shildt has a track record of a strong second half. Going to be very strong this season as far as we are out of the wild card.

I don’t think I have a problem with Maddux unless his program is leading to the excessive injuries. The control problem with the young pitchers is inconsistency in repeating deliveries and trying to do too much and overthrowing, which is a problem the world over with young pitchers.

I find it hard to be critical of Shildt’s game management when prior to the meltdown against the Cubs he had not lost a game this season that we entered the 9th with a lead.

Part of our young relievers problems could stem from the poor offensive support which causes a lot of stress situations.

I think the #1 problem is Albert. The Cardinals have scored 2 runs or less in 35 of their first 97 games and 3 runs or less in 50 of 97 games. They rank 26th of 30 teams in Runs scored, on base percentage and OPS. They are 22ng in home runs, 24th in walks and slugging. They are not among the top 15 teams in 10 of 12 offensive stats.

The next question is why do players go to other teams and perform better. The numbers Kelly has at Arizona would rank him 4th in batting average, 1st in on base percentage, 3rd in slugging and 2nd in OPS. Wong would rank 1st in batting average, 1st in on base pct, 3rd in slugging and 2nd in OPS. I know, different ballparks but there has been a consistent trend of position players who didn’t get a shot and went to other teams and accomplished a lot more. Has not happened with the pitchers.

In 2018 the newly hired Albert got in a conflict with assistant Mark “the Buddha” Budasky resulting to the Cardinals letting Buddha go. The official line was Albert’s approach would take some time to take effect.

As the guy said in the movie Caddy Shack—WELL, WE ARE WAITING. It has been 4 years of poor inconsistent offense with Albert.

Seems to me that other teams do not fear our hitters. We are constantly behind 0-2, particularly the young players and Carpenter. We do not do a good job of fouling off marginal pitches with two strikes on the hitter. We seem to swing from the heels on two strikes, again especially the young guys.

I’m more impressed with Perez improvement than Plummer but I watch a lot of Springfield baseball on the net and Plummer usually looks pretty good. Also Nunez got off to a terrible start at Palm Beach but has had some good outings in the last 2 months. Some guys, like Toerner don’t appear to ever be major league talent so they are just filler for a prospect list.

Gorman 3 HR’s tonight. Should get an all-star break callup to Memphis unless they keep him at Springfield to work on other defensive positions.

Now 5-19. And I see very little star power in the lineups. Palm Beach somewhat promishing but still a lot of guys that you just don’t ever see getting close to the major leagues. Pitching below AAA worse than position players. Hard to see us a #12 system.

Of course, we may have just hit a very strong set of opponents so far.

I suspect Shildt wanted to give Whitley a chance to redeem himself after the rough outing yesterday. Good psychology. Now Whitley, after a strong performance today may be back on track. Will need him with all the pitchers on the IL. Won’t miss Miller but fear that Hicks will be joining him after today.

This competes the redoing the Cardinals that has been going on since Shildt took over the team in 2018. Gone are Ozuna, Martinez and now Fowler. All weak defensively. Fowler is very weak on balls other than those back and to his right. He and Ozuna had countless catchable balls drop in front of them.

Now we have five young outfielders, four of which can play a solid center field and two a very good center field. Now we have a strong defensive team with the exception of Molina good on the base paths.

If one of O’Neill, Thomas or Bader can emerge as better hitters we could become a dominant team. Carlson will hit. Too bad we lost Arozarena went in the Tampa Bay trade.

I don’t expect us to pick up Braun or Puig. I looked over the free agents and didn’t see anyone left that would be much better than the youngsters we now have.

I personally know of one team that has offered players to an Indy team. I don’t know if the Cardinals are considering to do that, but that could be a reason why they have not gone to a second GCL team.

There is no way that there will be less young guys that think they have a chance to make the bigs and no way there will be less players that the MLB teams think that have a chance. Some of the apparent surplus from the cut back in affiliations will be reduced by releasing the players who were drafted and signed only to fill lower level minor league rosters.

The end of extended spring training will be very interesting. A lot of both young and older fringe players will be released that would not have been released in prior seasons. Should make it interesting. I could see quite a few players being offered by major league teams to Indy teams. And maybe some bidding that would cause players to opt for free agency (if they would have that option)rather than take an assignment to an Indy team. Then sign for more than the major league team would have paid them.

The Arenado trade had to be made, but it seems in a direction that the Cardinals have been moving with Shildt. He seems to be a speed, defense emphasis guy. This really gives us a superior defense. If we can get a center fielder who can hit we will almost be there. Replacing Yadi eventually with a good defender is also key.

I think Carlson is going to be ready this year. Edman should be good, not quite as good definsively as Wong but he should develop into a solid hitter. He seems to be the kind of guy who adapts well and continually improves.

If Arenado returns to form and DeJong maintains his early season performances over the long haul it could be a banner Cardinal season.

I think Gorman will hit St. Louis in 2022 and if the DH comes to the National League I could see him as a DH and defensive backup for Arenado and Goldy to give them a rest. I was really impressed with how Gorman performed in 2020 spring training and expect a good year for him split between AA-AAA in 2021.

I’m glad we didn’t give up Rondon.
