I just wanted to acknowledge Hjerpe and admit my concerns with Roby could and have been applied to Hence and Hjerpe.

Interesting point of comparison: If I were GM of this fantasy, I would jump at trading Roby through every pitcher we have been discussing for Padilla.
Roby, Hence,Hjerpe, Hansen, Davis, and I would consider Mautz.
When I consider Ortiz and Baez, it gets sticky. I think I would value Ortiz and Baez over everyone perhaps including Padilla.
    My votes mean nothing.

@Mudville – you voted this early for Cooper Hjerpe, and he has only thrown 25 games in the three years since he was drafted, and only threw 5.0 innings or more seven times.

LACardFan – I get your point. My point, again, is that Hjerpe’s condition is often successfully cured. And when he was pitching without physical impairment, he looked almost unhittable, at least, to me. Providing that his elbow is okay, if used as a reliever, it might take an opposing team once through their entire lineup for them to figure out what to do with him. He also gets some credit for being a first round draft pick. I rest my defense.

, if used as a reliever,

This is how I view all three of these pitchers now, based on their professional experience.

Way back om October 23 blingboy brought up Curtis Taylor, and minutes later, Cardinals 27 concurred. I couldn’t find my source. But I thought that I had read that Taylor either developed a new pitch, or refined a pitch that he already had. Regardless, if he shows up at ST and pitches the way he did at Memphis this year, he deserves a spot in the forthcoming unproven rotation (‘unproven’ = My wife told me that I needed to be more kind.) Yes, Curtis Taylor has been passed around like a hot potato. But we cannot rightfully ignore the fact that our own (almost a star) reliever, Riley O’Brien, didn’t break out until the Cardinals coaches got hold of him and helped him fix his deficiencies, allowing him to finally break out at the ripe old age of 30, thus proving that miracles can, and do, happen. And let’s bear in mind that Curtis Taylor, just short of only two weeks ago, was named TCN Memphis Starting Pitcher of the Year. No small honor. It is both tragic and shameful that he cannot be fairly ranked because of a technicality.

    Deniel Ortiz – 21 – 3B – A/A+ – .300/.416/.462 – 19 doubles, 1 triple, 13 HR – 117 K/67 BB – 39 stolen bases/8 caught stealing

    Yairo Padilla – 18 – SS – FCL – .283/.396/.367 – 4 doubles, 3 triples, 0 HR – 21 K/18 BB – 24 stolen bases/4 caught stealing

    Nathan Church – 25 – OF – A/AA/AAA/MLB – .329/.386/.524 – 19 doubles, 3 triples, 13 HR – 37 K/33 BB – 16 stolen bases/5 caught stealing

    Jesus Baez – 20 – SS – A/A+ – .242/.326/.387 – 14 doubles, 0 triples, 14 HR – 9 stolen bases/5 caught stealing

Jesus Baez just came off the board, and of these four position players, he’s the one I think is least likely to make the majors, primarily based on his OBP.

Ortiz’s K rate looks astronomical, but look at his walks. What those walks tell me is that he is working deep into counts, and he can probably benefit by being more aggressive at the plate. He is also showing speed on the basepaths, though his success rate dropped dramatically at high A. That tells me he was using speed at Low A, now needs to learn technique.

Padilla is showing everything – contact skills, low strikeout rate, good successes on the bases. But he has zero power. Not as concerning for an 18 year-old in FCL ball as a 20 year-old in High A, but this is the reason I have him below Ortiz.

Church had a breakout season. I am hoping the Cardinals see the fruitlessness of running Walker back out there in RF and at least give Church the opportunity to win the position. Defense alone he’ll probably be a 2 WAR upgrade over Walker. If his 2025 season is for real, he’ll adjust to MLB pitching.

    13. – Hjerpe
    14. – Ryan Mitchell This kid stands at 6’2″ and weighs in at 185 lbs. He has impressive scouting grades as an 18 year old. He was the Cardinals 2nd round draft choice this year and signed for about a half million dollars over slot.
