Are you going to count down your original list to #1 and then insert the acquisitions. Pardon if you have already answered that question
December 24, 2025 at 7:37 am #298171Sooner asked:
Are you going to count down your original list to #1 and then insert the acquisitions.
We will insert several players. The exact timing will depend on when Kyle and I agree on where they should be inserted and then prepare the writeups. So, for example, we could have a 12a and a 25a, inserted between 12 and 13 and 25 and 26. They will probably be bonus articles dropped in whenever they are ready for publishing.
Right now, with the holidays upon us, we have a few writeups ahead ready to go so we can relax a bit with family the next few days. Hopefully, you all can do the same!
December 24, 2025 at 7:40 am #298172The Cardinal Nation’s 2026 #STLCards Top 50 prospect countdown reaches no. 13 with the 72nd overall selection in the 2025 draft. With two above average pitches already, former college reliever Tanner Franklin has upside potential as a starter. https://t.co/wJvGfIPlDr pic.twitter.com/7zbceGrvse

I will never forget sitting off the 3rd base line watching Pablo Sandoval in the NLCS 10 or so years ago.
You definitely upped me on thick third basemen! Sandoval was the subject of my best quip ever. One of the SF beat writers tweeted out that Pablo was working on his plate discipline during the offseason. I asked if he meant home plate or dinner plate? 😉
December 24, 2025 at 8:16 am #298179Good one Brian. It rivals Fit Elvis.
December 24, 2025 at 4:14 pm #298202The comments about Jesus Baez’s work ethic are not very inspiring. Very physically talented but baseball is a sport where you need repetition of the fundamentals.
It will be fun to watch if Franklin can show signs of development on the changeup. If he can, he should be able to stick in the rotation, but if not he would still be very valuable out of the back of the pen.
December 25, 2025 at 7:59 am #298225At no. 12 in The Cardinal Nation’s 2026 #stlcards Top 50 prospect countdown is the Texas League Pitcher of the Year. @kyler416 explains why Ixan Henderson could become the next Matthew Liberatore – or better. https://t.co/M0ZwZdRiVG pic.twitter.com/ivFsPSN2cF

December 26, 2025 at 7:25 am #298253Ranked 11th in The Cardinal Nation’s 2026 #STLCards Top 50 prospect countdown is an oft-injured right-hander who had a breakout first half before Tommy John surgery. How long will it take Tekoah Roby to ramp back up and when will it begin? https://t.co/oJ0oeQN9Yz pic.twitter.com/jQ6PRspKYR

December 27, 2025 at 7:03 am #298294In a FREE article, The Cardinal Nation’s #stlcards Top 50 prospect countdown for 2026 reaches no. 10 with long time top prospect who hasn’t stayed healthy long enough to reach Triple-A. Is it finally time to move Tink Hence to relief? https://t.co/nL2O2FgqbI pic.twitter.com/6XihCrqTtw

December 27, 2025 at 8:54 am #298299Hence’s past on the mound results are irrelevant. So are Roby’s. We know that pitching in a way that achieves those results pushes their bodies beyond what can be tolerated. So if they return to pitching that way, they will go down again. They need to find a different way to pitch that their body can tolerate, and then they have to try to be effective pitching in that way. I personally do not carry them on my top prospect list while they are going through that process, because, if they can stay on the mound at all, it will be as a different pitcher, and there is no reason to think that will be a top prospect level pitcher until we see what kind of results can be put up without ending up back on the IL.
It seems like the org, and maybe Hence, finally accepted that reality, and it didn’t go well. The new way of pitching didn’t look too good, as Kyle described, and his body couldn’t tolerate it anyway. Back to square one. I guess maybe Roby had been trying something similar. Tweeking the mechanics to take stress off the shoulder put more stress somewhere else. So he also is back to square one finding a way to pitch that his body can handle. If he can, we will see if he’s any good.
It will be interesting to see whether Hence or Roby have more impact on a MLB roster than Winquest, who, as a durable and effective starter successfully breaking into the upper levels, didn’t get a 40 man spot. Its one thing to play make believe when there is no real price to pay, and another when there is.

ParticipantHence is back to where he was five years ago, after reaching #3 on the TCN’s list.
December 27, 2025 at 2:33 pm #298304I don’t agree that TKRob is in the same boat as Markavian.
TKRob with the time off/rehabbing can fully, versus rushing back, let the shoulder heal this time. Then with the new elbow, could be huge for his success the next decade. He was pitching like a top of the rotation prospect before the TJS.
Hence just seems to strain or pull random parts. To be able to be a difference maker for the St Louis Cardinals, putting him in relief is the best bet to get positive value out of him. (See Reyes, Alex)
By 2028, the contention window opens and he could be a top closer after getting some experience at the back end of the pen.December 27, 2025 at 2:42 pm #29830714NyquisT

CFIC…. boy, that’s opening a can of worms. But Reyes didn’t make it easy on himself.
December 28, 2025 at 6:40 am #298329Ninth in The Cardinal Nation’s 2026 #STLCards Top 50 prospect countdown is an oft-injured left-hander who missed 2025 due to Tommy John surgery. When will Cooper Hjerpe return, how will be pitch, and has his ceiling changed? https://t.co/mcLLrGgT3a pic.twitter.com/gBYSZsXz7U

December 28, 2025 at 9:11 am #298333I really like Hjerpe’s stuff and how dominant he is when he is on the mound, but I think both Hjerpe and Hence need to transition to the pen in 26. Hjerpe could be a very valuable back end BP piece.
I understand Kyle’s thoughts that Hjerpe should stay in the rotation talent wise, but the timeline and risk for him to make it as an SP to build up innings is not looking great. I could see the Cards callig him in the pen as a Sep callup or to start of 27. The Cards must think other teams would be willing to be aggressive and stick Hjerpe in the pen after a rehab stint as well since the protected him.
December 28, 2025 at 9:16 am #298334Back in summer 2024 we had a robust discussion of Hjerpe (and Roby and Hence) spread across several threads. Here is what I said about Hjerpe at the time:
” I think Hjerpe is headed for elbow surgery and a lengthy layoff. I say that because there is no structure within an elbow that sheds bits when healthy. Loose bodies are the result of either injury or wear beyond what the structure can tolerate. He is now out again after having the bodies removed. His elbows is likely continuing to come apart. Again, pretend whatever you want, but I will not play along. ”
That is from July 22, 2024 Minor League Game Thread week 15
Here we are a year and a half later. This winter a 40 man slot was involved, so there is a price that was paid.
December 28, 2025 at 9:42 am #298336I will say I think the Cards should be very aggressive with both Hence and Hjerpe in terms of putting them in the big league pen. Both are running out of time and getting older. Every pitch they throw in the minors is essentially a wasted pitch with a chance of getting hurt. Get them in the bigs throwing meaningful pitches at some point in their careers.
December 28, 2025 at 9:53 am #298338I would just add that the more outside pitchers brought in, the less pressure the Cardinals may feel to keep forcing them to start.
December 28, 2025 at 10:01 am #298339Get them in the bigs throwing meaningful pitches at some point in their careers.
Agreed, but the question is, then what? Hope that they are still on the mound throwing meaningful pitches in a few years when it will actually matter, or hope that they throw meaningful pitches long enough to be able to trade them profitably.
December 28, 2025 at 11:23 am #298350Agreed, but the question is, then what? Hope that they are still on the mound throwing meaningful pitches in a few years when it will actually matter, or hope that they throw meaningful pitches long enough to be able to trade them profitably.
I would like them to get an opportunity to get some innings this year and start building up some big league experience to give them the best shot to be valuable back of the bullpen arms for 27, 28, 29. For 27 they may not be be quite ready for the back of the pen until late in the year.
I also don’t know if you can expect both to be healthy at the same time always. But instead I’m taking a Dodgers approach with the pitching staff and pen in particular of building high talent even if high injury risks. If you accumulate enough talent, then even if you get the inevitable pitching injury, you still have remaining talent.
You cannot have enough high end pitching talent because there is no such thing as a workhorse pitcher. All pitchers get hurt. It is a simple fact of the game and it happens to the best of them at any time. Wheeler was close to what you could call a workhorse, but look at him this year suddenly out with a major injury. Burnes was the same this year.
December 29, 2025 at 7:32 am #298371At no. 8 on The Cardinal Nation’s 2026 #stlcards Top 50 prospect countdown is a true breakout player at Double-A in 2025. ParticipantI guess I blocked it out of my mind that that the pick used on Hence was part of the Liberatore/Arozarena trade.
Looks like Alika Williams is going nowhere also (our #37 pick that year that Tampa received)
December 29, 2025 at 10:31 am #298381
stlcard25ParticipantI’m a little surprised that Baez is so low. We had him 5th in our community rankings, although there was some competition between he and Bernal and Crooks.
This must mean that the top 7 are Wetherholt, Doyle, Rodriguez (I’m guessing in that order), Matthews, Bernal, Crooks, and…? Who am I missing? Is Clarke being added?
December 29, 2025 at 10:45 am #298383ST25, agreed. JJ, RR, then Doyle/Leo/Baez are 3 a,b,c for me
December 29, 2025 at 11:03 am #298386My score brought Baez’ overall mark down. I explain in the article why I feel that way. If he can do it again at Memphis, I will come around quickly.
