Will they also add an 8th player or has that already been done.
8. Cabrera – Finished strong at Memphis and was impressive in his outing after call-up. Looked a lot more stable with his delivery. Lot of heat and excellent curve. Could be our Hudson in 2020.
9. Torres – Thought he was adjusting to Peoria when the Cardinals sent him to Johnson City. Looks like a guy with a lot of tools.
10. Rondon – Don’t know what his stuff is like. Only saw him briefly at Springfield. But getting there at his age and doing well is enough for me.
Wonder why they don’t send him to the AFL if he is healthy?
Three ways to beat the Cardinals
1. Pitch inexperienced pitchers with ERA over 6.00
2. Give up lead off double
3. Two down the middle and one in the dirt
Just kidding but seems that way sometimes.
I suspect that there will be a continuing reduction of minor league affiliates. Many players are selected and signed to fill rosters more than with expectations that they will make the major leagues.
At the same time I would expect to see a rise in Independent leagues.
Maybe the key question will the players fare better financially in the Indy Leagues?
third time a charm
3 Lane Thomas
Cubs lose 3-2.
Cabrera looked smooth and under control today. Earlier this year he was flying all over the place. I guess they finally got him straightened out at Memphis.
Hudson quietly getting to 15 wins. He has always been a bit underrated in my opinion.
Johnson City wins 8-6. Appy League champs again.
I think we will lose two to free agency this year. Ozuna because he will not accept a qualifying offer and Wacha because he will not get one.
Cabrera has better stuff and has pitched better lately. Not sure why we would need a spot starter.August 31, 2019 at 10:16 pm in reply to: StL 2019 Games 60/135 thread: Sat 8/31 vs. Reds (DH) #104617
When they went into the bottom of the 9th with a 9-0 Gant positioned to win his 10th I knew we had it. Karma baby.August 31, 2019 at 4:45 pm in reply to: StL 2019 Games 60/135 thread: Sat 8/31 vs. Reds (DH) #104569
I have to give Shildt credit for his management of the bullpen this season. But I would probably not sent Hudson back out in the 8th although he almost got away with it as Hudson retired the first two hitters. I’m sure he was trying to save the pen. Then I would have pulled him after he walked Votto. Now our pen goes into the nightcap a little used.
Gallego may be getting worn down. Doesn’t look nearly as sharp as when he was going good.
Tonight’s game looks a little rough. They have one of their best going against one of our worst.
Also I would have used Martinez as a pinch hitter rather than O’Neill. But Shildt may have been giving him a shot at some playing time in right field. O’Neill didn’t step up but Wong did.
We are going into a part of the season when players have to step up. We should be in a little better shape than last year as we were counting on a lot of young guys, particularly pitchers.
Johnson City lost 5-4 giving up 3 runs in the 8th.
Memphis lost 5-1 to end their run for the division championship. Adolis
Garcia, Knizner and Nogowski not playing? Parsons gave up all 5 runs in the first inning. What happened to Cabrera.
Memphis stayed alive with an 8-5 win over New Orleans. Tied the game in the 6th with home runs from Carlson and Williams. Won in the 9th on homers by Urius and Sosa. Junior Fernandez the winner.
With Iowa’s loss to Oklahoma City the Redbirds are 4 games to go with Iowa who lead them for the division championship by 4 games. So four straight sudden death encounters with Memphis the one to die if they lose. Still a terrific comeback by Memphis who have gone 13-2 including a 4 game sweep of Iowa in Memphis.
I’ll take 16 of 17 rather than put an untested pitcher in the closer spot. Brebbia and Gant have both had their rough spots. Gallegos has been the most consistent but he has been ultra-valuable in his current role. I think he may be wearing down a little. He has been around the zone the entire year. Now he is throwing more WOZ’s (Way out of Zone).
Carlson – 0 for the double header tonight.
Leone should keep the name “Dominator” on his back all of the time. Works a lot better than Leone.
Very embarased I had a brain cramp. Gant was secured along with Ellis and Luke Dykstra in the Jaime Garcia deal. Garcia was among the 33 top 5 prospects.
Miller went along with Jenkins for Heyward. Miller performed well but had a bad WL record in his first year with the Braves and has done little since. Jenkins not really a factor. Heyward had a pretty good year with the Cardinals tho he did not provide the anticipated power bat. The Cardinals are probably glad they didn’t sink a big dollar deal into him when he went to the Cubs.
Knizner 4-4 with a double and 2 home runs in Memphis win over Omaha. Carlson pinch hit a flyball out. Warner the winner. Arozarena and Adolis Garcia also hit homers.
Big night. A chance to regain first place in the Division and to reach as season high 11 games over .500.
I’m not advocating bringing Carlson up because I don’t know who to sit but I suspect the Cardinals management are agonizing over the decision. I think they would have to sit Bader, Jose Martinez and O’Neill and that would be a hard decision to make.
