I would like to see them waive some of the vets that are impending FAs like Armstrong, Kittredge, and Lynn to make room for younger players. For the month of September, give McGreevy or Graceffo a shot in the rotation. Dewitt saves money so he would love it if someone claims those guys.
We currently have the 12th worst record. I would not be upset at all if we lose more by playing young guys. It will help improve them long term, and we will improve our odds of getting a better draft pick. We need to build for the future. Not hanging on to lost hopes this season.

What young guys do you want to see more of? There are a few potential role players. Nothing that is going to matter.
We get to see more of Herrera at least. But we already know what there is to see.
Yeah an ok bat whose limited defensively. Another future DH.

I brought this up a few days ago. You do get rid of payroll if claimed but not that much. The owners did say they’re really not in a position to take any payroll on at the deadline.
Lynn, Gibson, Pham, Kittridge and Armstrong could be casualties and all claimed by someone. I’d look at teams under the tax threshold or close to it taking a look.
However I don’t want to hear this BS if x players is moved up and then next season looks like crap. We already have some weird theories about younger players being brought up too soon and blaming it on management.
I just hope we go younger next year and commit to more of a rebuild, rather than coming up with excuses like needing leadership. Do what you can to move the vets this off season and next year go this way and run with it, for better or worse (assuming the vet’s are dealt):

Baker/Burleson – 1b
Saggese – 2b
Winn – ss
Gorman – 3b
Donovan – lf
Scott/Siani – cf
Walker – rfAdd McGreevy and Graceffo to the rotation. Move on from Marmol and his staff and bring in good baseball men that can work with younger players.
Noot as a fourth outfielder and possibly the left fielder with Donovan going to second if Saggese doesn’t work out. But give those guys a lot of reps, even if they struggle and we look like the White Sox for awhile. Make it so next year will be the worst year out of the next four or five. Could be a couple of other younger guys in the mix from deals as well.
It’ll never happen of course. Management won’t want to deal Contreras, and probably can’t get decent value for Arenado. But at least work to get younger and more athletic, and work in a couple of young arms to the rotation.
And Contreras and Arenado are two of my favorite Cardinals. But in this situation, they are not what we need. It would be doing them a favor if they could go to a strong club ready to win now.
When I look at that list of what we’ve got its real hard to get excited. If Walker and Gorman don’t pan out as middle of the order impact bats, we don’t have diddly. And right now they are not panning.
Yep, it is a risk as the young guys you have been counting on need to come through if you are going to be any good. But at this point, I think you have to give it a shot. Management is not going to bring in high end free agents, and what you have now is not working. So I say run with the young guys. Who knows, maybe one or two will flourish with regular reps.
And maybe after a couple of years you add Wetherholt and some others and we become like the Orioles are the last couple of years. It is time to do that. Bill might not want to wait, but it seems to be either that, or go big on spending and hope you get the right guys and don’t become the Mets of the Midwest.
I agree there is no point continuing with the vets, and it seems they are not selling tickets anyway.
What young guys do you want to see more of?
I mostly want to see the younger pitchers get a shot. McGreevy and Graceffo should be given some turns in the rotation to see if they can be counted on as a #5 SP next year. For the BP, split some time with Loutos, Roycroft, O’Brian. Armstrong and Kitty aren’t going to help this team next year, and realistically we need 1 or 2 of those young guys be provided some quality innings.
Yeah some of these guys are likely role players, but they are cost controlled and have options. We keep so many guys in our BP that don’t have options and have no flexibility in our BP to replace someone when we need a fresh arm.
I also would call Gorman back up. He has the physical talent, but you can tell he has no confidence. Someone in the org needs to inspire some confidence in him or he is not going to be a valuable big leaguer. As Bling said, we need Gorman or Walker to become a middle of the order bat. Tell Gorman he is in the lineup every day the rest of the year and evaluate what you have there to either stick with him or move on this off-season.
I agree with your assessment Mike. We need to go with the younger position players next year.
I would let Goldy walk, trade Arenado to his hometown Dodgers even if we have to eat some money, and trade Matz to anyone who will take him even if we have to eat most of the remaining contract.
I would play Gorman at 3B and Walker in RF EVERYDAY. We aren’t going to be a playoff team in 2025 anyway so we have to let these guys have one final chance before we cut ties and they go to another team to win the MVP. I don’t care if they strike out 300 times each I would play them everyday next season. It is going to be a rebuilding year regardless.
Next year’s team looks to be a long way off from being competitive. In ’76 the Cardinals had some nice young core players in Simmons, Forsch, Hernandez, McBride and Templeton. By the time they qualified for the postseason, it was six years later and only Hernandez and Forsch remained in a Cardinal uniform.
I know I’m in the minority, but I think we need to let VS Dos play.
I mean he’s playing. I don’t think that bat is ready but the defense is good. He hit the crap out of that pitch in the 5th. It was a mighty fine stare until it hit the seats and trip around the bases had flare.
More and more, it’s looking like Burly will be fine, defensively, at 1B next season. If he continues to slug enough, offensively, for 1B.
Got our of some trouble in the 7th. Tough hop tied up VS2 a tad but no matter as we get 6-4-3.
I’ll take anything but Goldschmidt at first in 2025.
