The Cardinals haven’t been very consistent under Marmol’s leadership for well over a year. Clapp was an outstanding manager at AAA. Maybe Clapp could “jump start” this team down the stretch.

ParticipantAll for that. He should have been given the job instead of Marmol.
August 14, 2024 at 1:30 pm #264238bbcram, maybe even before Shildt.
August 14, 2024 at 1:32 pm #264239August 14, 2024 at 1:33 pm #264240RBK, this is a new situation. What’s you problem? As Brian suggested, ignore if you don’t care for the subject.
August 14, 2024 at 1:41 pm #264243No, Stubby Clapp would not make a discernible difference at this juncture. Heck, Ole Casey Stengel rising from the grave couldn’t help this group of mediocrity personified.
Nothing against Clapp, but maybe it’s time the Cards actually look OUTSIDE the organization for new leadership…you know…like they did when they hired Whitey Herzog or when they hired TLR. Those guys seemed to have some success, did they not?
August 14, 2024 at 1:47 pm #264245AdM, my suggestion is “interim” manager for Clapp for the rest of the season. See how that goes. Then maybe open it up to outside candidates after the season.

Not gonna happen!
August 14, 2024 at 3:57 pm #264273No one can make a below average team good. There is just not much talent on this team. If Alec Burleson is your best offensive player then you’re not a good team.
August 14, 2024 at 4:43 pm #264278Like some others I thought the Stub-ster should have been hired rather than Marmol.
Would it help to make the switch now? I have no opinion on that. When the club went with Shildt over Matheny it seemed to help, so maybe this would have the same impact. My sense back then was that Matheny was sort of a stern, not overly “players” type of manager, and Shildt was more relaxed and the players responded to that.
Ollie seems reasonably personable, although Stubby seems even moreso.
August 14, 2024 at 7:30 pm #264317I don’t think it matters who the manager is. The roster is heavily flawed.
TLR could not win with this team.
August 15, 2024 at 4:25 am #264350Nobody ever mentions Pop Warner. I see him as equivalent to Clapp. Nothing wrong with his background. But then, I remember thinking the same about Chris Maloney. And about Oquendo for that matter. Anyway, when is the last time they named one of their base coaches?
And does DC MacLea actually exist?
August 15, 2024 at 9:44 am #264375I think Clapp or Skip (who will be available after this season) would both be fine managers for this club, but as others have said, this team has much bigger problems than the manager. The roster is extremely flawed. The big money guys just flat out don’t produce, the younger guys seem to have a hard time finding their footing, the farm system doesn’t produce at the level that is needed, and the front office/ownership can’t seem to come up with a plan that works. All in all not a good combination.
August 15, 2024 at 11:06 am #264390I was avoiding posting here, but as the thread lingers on, I have to ask this question. Why does anyone think another member of the current staff will make any substantial difference? Winning pennants in Triple-A and having familiar faces don’t necessarily translate all that well, IMO. And those who believe the manager is a puppet for the front office couldn’t be happy with the fourth consecutive first time MLB manager hired from within…
If you just want to fine tune what you have, keep looking within. But if you really want to make changes, bring in fresh blood with new ideas – and give them the flexibility to implement their plan.
Whether the Cards are actually interested in this and capable of doing it is another matter entirely…
August 15, 2024 at 12:10 pm #264392Doesn’t matter who they hire as manager until Moz is gone.

I agree wholeheartedly with BW! To make an effective change it needs to come from without and a somewhat different philosophy. However…
Doesn’t matter who they hire as manager until Moz is gone.
This is also true because what BW states will not happen as long as Mozeliak is still with the organization. Mozeliak wants his manager to acquiesce to him. Shildt and his “philosophical differences” seem to be working in SD! In fact his current team’s record would be 1st place in our division.
August 15, 2024 at 12:35 pm #264395Exactly my thoughts…
We need new ideas and a new direction. A new voice. Similar to when we brought in Whitey and then later with TLR.
August 15, 2024 at 1:07 pm #264398I saw an article under The Sporting News banner proclaiming Marmol could be on the hot seat “per an INSIDER”. OK, I figure I’ll click on it. Who is the “insider” you ask?
“Cardinals insider Bernie Miklasz noted that manager Oli Marmol could be on the hot seat at the end of the season.”
HAHAHAHA
Bernie the Cardinals insider.
I fell for it.

no
August 15, 2024 at 1:39 pm #264403A good mind in a dugout can overachieve with solid players. What makes a good manager is good players. Pete Rose summed it up best in his documentary.
Marmol isn’t going anywhere this season.
