They won’t bring Matthews up because of the gignatic financial commitment to Gray and others. Typical Mo.
August 24, 2024 at 8:09 pm #265413gigantic instead of the misspelling. They won’t bring Matthews up because of the gignantic financial commitment to Gray and others. They’ll bring Matthews up later than sooner. Typical Mo.
August 24, 2024 at 9:05 pm #265416Enough BS from Gray. Right now, he is an average MLB starting pitcher. 25M next season. It appears to me Mo got fleeced again.
August 24, 2024 at 9:49 pm #265418Sonny Gray didn’t cost Johnny a wooden nickel. Willie Jr.’s the schmuck who got his pocket picked. He’s old and has probably grown accustomed to it.
August 24, 2024 at 10:05 pm #265420Sonny Gray has been bad since the All Star Break! A number 1, nowhere near!
August 25, 2024 at 7:43 am #265429Lots of guys look good in the Texas League, so keep your pants on.
As to Gray, when you need to buy your entire rotation, hiring late career guys on the down slope is cheaper. Obviously, that is the way the Cardinals went with it. Guys in their prime come with risks too, and the chance of a huge bad contract is huge and bad. There is no good answer to a pipeline that doesn’t produce anything, other than building a new pipeline.
August 25, 2024 at 9:22 am #265438I wonder if Gray has actually declined or if he’s pitching through a little ding (I doubt it) or if he’s just lost focus at his age being on a team that is more or less out of it?
Flaherty seems to be doing pretty good away from StL
Hicks started like a house on fire for SF but has cooled considerably.
I think Carlson is likely to regress to his mean in Tampa.
Im not sure what’s up with Gray and am generally disappointed in his results; I hope he can rebound.
Scruffy Mikolas is the guy I really, really do not want to see in our rotation next year but – I bet I don’t get my way.
August 25, 2024 at 11:06 am #265444Gray’s command was way off last night, and he has not looked good in recent starts. I too wonder if he has a minor health issue, but is taking a turn because the club needs him.
He certainly is not a stopper or pitching like an ace right now.

ParticipantEasy there, its thoughts like this that has put us in the situation we are in.
August 25, 2024 at 1:53 pm #265456Don’t bring him up early. It’s the TCN urban legend that it ruins player.
August 25, 2024 at 2:30 pm #265461The Twins starter today came all the way from A ball to MLB this season.
August 25, 2024 at 4:04 pm #265474Sonny Gray has a 2.9 fWAR with 32 games to go. This is second on the team to only Masyn Winn.
While I agree with many that Gray is not a #1 pitcher and while I agree with the author of this thread that Mathews appears to have a bright future in MLB, I find it ludicrous to suggest Mathews is better than Sonny Gray at this particular moment in time.
August 25, 2024 at 4:08 pm #265475AdM, that’s “par for the course” Right now, Gray is an average MLB pitcher. Matthews, at 23, has been brilliant at his levels. I’m going with the impressive youngster. Hopefully, we both get better at agreeing to disagree.
August 25, 2024 at 4:11 pm #265476Yes, it’s par for the course that I use actual data to make a point while you make wild statements which have no basis in reality and cannot be backed up by any evidence to support your latest silliness.
August 25, 2024 at 4:14 pm #265477AdM, as a longtime, highly successful high school coach in another sport. Sometimes, you just have to trust your instincts evaluating potential. Like I did with Burleson. That worked out pretty darn good, wouldn’t you agree? I believe you thought my take on Burleson was “silly” for a long time. Am I right? It’s not “silly” now. You like data. Check out his HRs and RBIs. And a respectable BA.
August 25, 2024 at 4:39 pm #265481Your take on Burleson is not correct and was never correct.
At times you compared him to Joey Votto, Tony Gwynn, and Ted Simmons (to name a few).
He is not close to these players and never will be.
Additionally, you touted him for a couple of years as a “Doubles Machine” (your exact words). His 16 doubles on the season hardly qualifies him as a doubles machine.
He is exactly what I thought he was…a decent, not great hitter, who can’t run, can’t play defense, and can’t hit left-handed pitching. These facts are indisputable as of today.
FYI…with 32 games left his fWAR of 1.0 is currently tied for 13th on the Cardinals (with Ivan Herrera).
Now, please don’t respond unless you have a few facts or points of data to back up your silliness.
August 25, 2024 at 4:42 pm #265482AdM, you rambled how horrible, defensively, Burleson was at 1B. Please evaluate his defensive performance at 1B today. By the way, with Contreras being out so much and with both Goldy’s sand Arenado’s dubious offensive play this season. The Cardinals wouldn’t even have the slightest chance at the last wildcard if it weren’t for Burleson’s production. Spin that.

Well, something is ruining them.
August 25, 2024 at 5:25 pm #265492It’s the unmistakeable signature of the evil baseball gypsies. These fiendish little goblins are a genuine scourge and can be nearly impossible to extricate once they’ve gained a firm foothold on a baseball organization.
August 25, 2024 at 5:50 pm #265493AdM, hassles me about Burleson being good, but not a Superstar. Burly is 25 years old. Think about the progress he’s made this season. I just hope Gorman and Walker progress to the level Burleson has by the time they are 25. Please give me some slack on all the Burleson talk. He is hitting and playing defense into replacing Goldschmidt at 1B next season. Saving millions for the needed starting pitching help. That is one less problem of the many problems the Cardinals have.
August 25, 2024 at 6:09 pm #265496Here’s the deal. next season, unfortunately, it looks like an underperforming, Gray. is taking over the underperforming, Goldschmidt’s salary this season. Both at around 25 million/per. With Burleson’s production, at a minimum salary, it enables the Cardinals some, somewhat, salary space to maybe help the team. Burly could use that leverage now. But he won’t.He’s a team player.
August 25, 2024 at 6:18 pm #265498I’m not sure salary space will help them unless that money is used to retain the services of an experienced and effective shaman. We all saw what happened with the Bambino in Boston and that horrific goat in Chicago. These things sometimes require unorthodox solutions.

What leverage? He’s under team control until 2029 and isn’t arb eligible until 2026. He has no leverage.
You have no idea what you’re talking about.
August 25, 2024 at 6:43 pm #265501That’s not entirely true. He could always defect to the KBO. The Samsung Lions could use a decent LH’ed bat.
