Mozeliak earlier on had three pretty good trade chips in Arenado, Fedde and Walker. None of these three fit into future plans.
How was Arenado a good trade chip? He blocked the few teams that they tried to trade him to. Walker is not a trade chip either.
I’ll certainly give you Fedde, but there may not have been a taker. Same with Helsley.

I know both he in 2023 & Franco in 2024 were the Cards big signings. I know it’s a small sample size, but their struggles may underscore why most teams do not invest high dollars in DSL pitching & instead focus their dollars on hitters. They find guys who throw in the low-mid 80’s & sign them for nothing. Then once they get the proper nutrition, wind up 95-100mph in two years!
Chen-Wei Lin was the other top signee in 2023 ($500k) and is also very tall at 6’7. He’s pretty good in A+ ball now, but is old as a prospect for the league.
I would like to see them part with 2 of Nootbaar/Burleson/Herrera as I don’t see them as long-term fits. We have a lot of role players eating up spots right now and trading 2 of these would free up a lot.
I don’t see Arenado going anywhere either until Wetherholt is ready. Probably keep Arenado until mid-year 2026, then release him and call up Wetherholt is what will happen imo.
I think he will have to dip into the FA starter pool so we aren’t pressured to push Mathews/Roby/Hence. That will be the extent of the free agency market, unless they get a starter back from the above guys or from Helsley/Fedde.
Gorman is going to go somewhere else and absolutely kill it too. He’s going to be one of those guys. I don’t see it ever happening here either. I would still keep him through next year just in case.
Granilo has always had control issues, so maybe they just want the sample size to get high enough since this is his first time doing it.
The top 6 in the MLB bullpen is rather elite this year. It’s just those 7-8 spots that are having a rough time.
Attendance to me is always a catch-22. If they lowered prices by say half, would attendance double? If not, business-wise, it doesn’t make sense. I’m sure there is a metric they track to optimize seats taken vs cash in, and that metric has improved immensely since the early 90s.

I’d just as soon take my chances on a pitcher with high upside, rather than an outfielder that has trouble putting the bat on the ball like Gorman and Walker. Maybe try for a hitter again in the 2026 draft.
We also have some data showing Jobe and Lieter, Rocker and Horton, Lowder and Skenes, Burns and Smith, the high-end SP choices in the last 4 drafts, have turned out rather well so far.

That’s really the big problem. Yes, the Cards will absolutely play Siani too much in CF if Scotts not on the roster.

Gorman is a couple of years removed from being a prospect. Both him and Scott were top 100 prospects so unsure on the point anyway. The only way Scott matters to Gorman is if Nootbaar is the everyday CF, and as much as I love Noot, he is below average in CF. Gorman will get a lot of playing time, but he isn’t a starter if you only have 9 spots unless it is over Burly at DH or Arenado is sent somewhere.
Okay, a better way of saying it is that Gorman has more upside. He made the top 100 list all 4 years he was a prospect. And yes, I am referring to Noot in CF, Donovan in LF, and Gorman at 2B. Nootbaar is not a below-average centerfielder either.
I don’t want our young guys rotting on the bench and the lowest man on the totem pole is Scott, imo, who can spend a few months more in AAA, where just last year he had just a .597 OPS. I know Gorman wasn’t much better there last year, but he’s already had a +.800 OPS MLB season. The goal should be to try to get all of the young players 500+ PAs this year.

I don’t care about spring numbers, but if Scott hasn’t earned the starting CF job, then I am at a loss. From the games I’ve watched, he looks much more comfortable in the box and actually looks to have some solid gap power. While I love Siani’s defense, he didnt do nearly enough last year to have earned the job.
You don’t care about spring number, but look at your very own lineup. By including Scott, you are blocking Gorman, a far superior prospect. Gorman’s horrid 2024 was still better than Scott’s (by almost a full 1 WAR) so you are explicitly relying on spring numbers.
Siani, imo, should be a complete afterthought in the decision.
When all is said and done, restoring/maintaining profitability reigns supreme. (That is less a criticism than a reality check.)
I really don’t think this is a position ownership can take in these times. We have 4-5 Steinbrenner’s out there nowadays.
I don’t really like the CA and CF outlook. Those two spots seem pencilled in and neither gives me any confidence.

I think there’s a pretty strong possibility that Matt Svanson will be competing at the major league level at some point in 2025. I don’t see another player past our #12, Tekoah Roby, that might do that except, possibly, Prieto or Bedell. And if Bedell gets injured again, that leaves only Prieto, barring a big surprise,
I think Luis Gastelum will be a contender.
#10 – Lin (Roby is still a good prospect also) I don’t see a drop off since I have Lin above Bernal and Davis.
