Those mid-70s A’s were something. A cast of characters who knew how to win. I didn’t mind those teams, but couldn’t stand Charley Finley. He was a jerk.
Alright, nice win. Weird how Mikolas is so much better pitching at home than on the road.
Yeah Bikemike, Gooden was another story altogether. When I saw him work as a 19, 20 and 21 year old, he was as dominant of a pitcher as I’ve ever seen. And in my view, there’s no telling the numbers he would have hung up on the board if not for the lousy choices he made. He was in another galaxy of baseball pitchers before poison ruined him and his career.
Well, the Redbirds eke this one out to pull to within 2 games of even. And although they’re buried at 16.5 games off the pace, it was still fun talking about my favorite game with you kids…Haha! Just another reminder of why baseball’s still the best game ever invented!
I like seeing Scott and Church in the same outfield. Now if they hit anything.
Attendance (tickets sold) 17,002
Last year on Sept. 6 for a game against the Mariners the attendance in the box for tickets sold was 37,476 and they averaged right at 34K for the entire month of Sept. of ’24. Sales are justifiably way down.
Maybe Bloom can sign Mikolas to a 2.5M 1 year deal where he only pitches at home?
He can still travel with the team and be everybody’s big brother but just never pitch on the road…
ZTR – I actually thought the same thing this morning so I went and looked up past seasons of Mikolas’ home/road splits and this season is an anomaly.
One thing that has been consistent for Mikolas over all his Cardinals career is that the team nearly always goes to sleep on offense whenever Mikolas pitches. Any reasonable person would look at that and know that it can’t have anything to do with Miles because Miles doesn’t ever swing a bat and even back when he did, he was solid at it for a pitcher. But the trend continues year over year over year. Whenever Mikolas pitches, the team doesn’t score many runs – at least not while he’s on the mound. Is it psychological? I’m really beginning to wonder. We seem to be well past the point of random chance.
In 54 games since July 1, the Cardinals have won by 4 or more runs in just 5 of those contests – 2 against the Marlins plus one each against the Rockies and Nationals. The bottom dwellers. The only other time came in a 5-0 game against the Cubs.
In those same 54 games, the Cardinals have lost by 4 or more runs a staggering 20 times. If you wonder why you feel down about the team right now and you can’t quite pinpoint it since the overall record of the team is ok, this is the reason.
Look at OBP. Way too many guys are doing way too much walking back to the dugout. The one that maybe is most concerning to me is Winn. 500+ PAs, OBP .309. He is talked about as a core piece moving forward. I certainly hope that is not going to be what the new regime is looking to put out there.
