Does anyone here think we are a better team than our record? Ownership does. Juniors-junior is trying to put lipstick on this pig. They have gotten good at blowing smoke. Looks like they believe it too, or at least want us to.

The season ends in 10 days. They don’t wait until the WS ends to do stuff anymore.

It’s profoundly simple…There’s no such thing as a team that is better than it’s W/L record. It doesn’t exist. Not anywhere at anytime. The entire concept of a W/L record is to define the team. I don’t know if Willie Jr’s. spawn really said what he purportedly said, but if he did indeed say that, all you have to do is to take into account who said it…

I disagree. You can look at run differential for instance as an easy indicator. Tampa Bay has a 75-78 record with a +52 run differential and the Cardinals have a 74-79 record with a -58 run differential. That is 110 runs different favoring Tampa Bay, but only 1 more win. Tampa Bay is better than their record indicates and the Cardinals are worse than their record indicates. Using Baseballreference Pythagorean W-L it says the Rays should be 82-71 and the Cardinals should be 71-82.

I think the Cardinals need to put in a claim for Alek Manoah. Signing a hurt Blue Jay pitcher worked out pretty good a little over 20 years ago. What’s it going to hurt?

He doesn’t look like he’ll get back to being a good MLB pitcher, but you never know. Maybe he’s next year’s innings Mikolas…or Curtis Taylor.

    Manoah has character issues…no thanks.

I’d like to see them use our surplus role player types (Donovan and Nootbaar perhaps) to go after Jose Soriano from the Angels. He’s a good young innings-eater type that would help solidify the rotation now and still be around in 3 years. The Angels certainly need pitching, but I could see them biting on a deal for a guy like Donovan.

Another trade we could do would be Jorge Soler for Arenado. That trade gets us the elusive RH OF bat (even if he’s not good anymore), but the trade would shed some of Arenado’s salary without being a total loss. Arenado would be an upgrade for them at 3B.

Arenado presumably still wants to go to a winner. That does not describe the Angels. They have a streak of 10 consecutive losing seasons and are in last place for the second year in a row. He has already been there in the NL version when in Colorado.

I get that, but he also basically lives in Anaheim. His house is 15 minutes from the ballpark in Newport Beach/Lake Forest. I think his fortress of solitude workshop is in Anaheim too.

The Angels were one of the teams on Arenado’s approved trade list last year.

I think the Cardinals are stuck with Arenado, unless management is willing to eat all of his contract and release him. If I were another team, I wouldn’t take any of his salary, and I wouldn’t give very much for him. Arenado is a glove only at this point. It was a bad signing by Mozeliak. Cardinals are going to be bad for half a decade or more. It’s a deep hole they are in.

The Rays are rumored to be looking for a catcher. The Cardinals are loaded with them. Could there be a match for a SP from the Rays? Rasmussen and Bradley would be my top 2 choices that they might be able to obtain for immediate help.

Taj Bradley or Drew Rasmussen would be okay. Rays would want more than one of our catchers if we wanted Rasmussen. I think the Cards should get a more sure thing in Rasmussen. Pitching is such a glaring need.

The Cardinals have quantity. If the Rays are looking for an everyday catcher, they would take Herrera and make do somehow. But we just want to unload spare parts and get back a solid starter with some years of control who doesn’t live on the IL. Not happening.

Herrera and Burly can not be moved if they want over 1.5 through the turnstiles next year.
I’d actually add Contreras to that list, his contract is not actually bad at all.

Noot and Donovan for a controlled SP.

At least one catcher, if not two, should be moved. Crooks and Pozo(they even used him as a PH) would be fine with Bernal in Memphis and RR finishing in SF.

JJ up on April 25 or so.

I disagree with this type of thinking. First, they are the type of one dimensional players we need to move away from to have a more functional roster. Second, it assumes we would not get something back that fans would be equally, or more, interested in seeing play. If we could get a playable pitcher or outfielder, see ya later.

So, you want to keep three 1B/DH types, but get rid of two guys capable of playing the outfield on a team that doesn’t have any outfielders.

I agree with Bling, we need to declutter the 1B/DH types.

    And we need legitimate outfielders.

I do think to get viable pitching, we would need to package one of Donovan/Burleson + Crooks. Perhaps all three of Donovan + Burleson + Crooks.

The problem with getting rid of Herrera and Burly is that they are our two best hitters. We do want to score in 2026 right? And they are cheap.

I would rather trade one or two of Contreras, Noot, or Donnie for pitching.

CB has the proven arb players to get immediate rotation help/innings, but, he will also be serving two masters. Trading for pitching depth in the minors, by trading back for prospects, also attempts to fortify future pitching. Who is available thru trade, may determine which pitching level gets addressed, and when.

Agreed, but I think we will see them probably package some guys together to get out of the money as much as possible. Like along the lines of,
Arenado, Nootbaar, Romero and $20 million to Dodgers. Muncy to Houston. Cardinals get 3 prospects from Dodgers and 2 from Houston. They won’t be the highly touted guys doing this, but it saves them money. Could take a chance on getting a guy like River Ryan coming back from TJ surgury and 2 prospect arms from each. Houston needs a LH bat, Arenado will accept to the Dodgers and they get a LF better than Conforto for sure, and as a bonus everyone gets to go “home”. The 3 to LA are from Southern California and Muncy is from Texas. Didn’t mean to do that but when looking them up I noticed it.
They could do along the same with Gray and Contreras with Donovan and Pages. Using their value to off-set a lot of the money. The thing I really don’t like doing it with Donovan is he is by far their highest trade chip and they wouldn’t get the same return as just trading him alone, but if getting out from under the money quickly is a priority then it’s how I think it gets done.
I will also say Cleveland lack of offense has me intrigued as Robert Cerfolio knows their system well and has a relationship with them and Contreras could be appealing to them. And again maybe a 3 team thing where the Cardinals could send Gray to somewhere, they send offense to Cleveland with Contraras too, and the Cardinals getting prospects from Cleveland.

Intriguing ideas 667. I’m not sure how much interest the Dodgers have in Arenado. They have a $10M option on Muncy. I imagine they will just pick that up and move on. I could see them having some interest in Noot however since Conforto was such a bust.

It’s hard to imagine trading 2 of our 3-5 real assets in one fell swoop, and especially if it’s just to save a measly $22 million (over two seasons) on Arenado. I would rather pay even more than that and accept only lotto tickets in return.

Well as I have said before I honestly see no good reason to trade Arenado or Gray at all, at least when it comes to helping the rebuild. Neither player is blocking anyone. Arenado could hit .150 next year and still have a higher WAR than Gorman based on defense alone.

And who is Gray blocking? Curtis Taylor? Trading these guys is just a budget savings ploy. Neither player has a legitimate replacement and neither player is likely to generate much of a prospect return. Gray might generate some return if the Cards eat half of his remaining money.

The only player with a NTC that would help the rebuild by trading is Contreras. He actually does have trade value that could generate a decent return and we have a cheap replacement waiting to play 1B in Burly.
