ParticipantI can understand trading for Heyward and trying to sign him after that. But I will never understand the Fowler signing. I was stunned they did. If that’s one of the things from not taking chances of free agency they are fools. I know it won’t happen but I am still all on Harper. Not because he is “generational” player he isn’t but because he checks many of the boxes of what this organization needs. Other than the obvious he is a lefty he just turned 26 in October you are signing him for his most productive years. You can give him 10 yrs and he will 35 at the end of the contract. It sends a loud message to other free agents the Cardinals are open for business. It gives the team a marquee player whether he is or not. Brings an exciting new hope for the fans. He is impact on the lineup is what we need. He makes the lineup better. He isn’t Trout not even close but he doesn’t have to be. A big risk of course but a big reward possible. I rather take a chance on him than waiting for Arenado or the next big free agent. I don’t want to trade for Goldy he is 31, a righty, and plays a position we have a good player already. If you were to re-sign him at what price and how many years? From 32 to ????

ParticipantBecause you make blanket statements about him using words like “always”. I don’t hold anything against him. But nobody is perfect and Matheny is not the exception. He made plenty mistakes like all us of do and he wasn’t always right and the players he had problem always wrong. He lost his job for a reason and a lot had to do with him thinking he was always right and it was his way or the highway.

ParticipantNobody is “always” anything good or bad. How do you know MM was always a selfless person? Your obsession with Matheny is disturbing.

ParticipantGrab the 26 yr old left hitting RF while you can.
NJ315
ParticipantActually through age 25 since Harper turned 26 in October.
NJ315
ParticipantTrout is in a league of his own. Betts had an amazing 2018 and on his way to be a big time player. But to be fair can we compare WAR through age 26 for the rest? Then the assessment would be even for all of the ones not named Betts or Trout.

ParticipantMaybe Mo should pay back some of the money he spent brilliantly on the likes of Leake, Fowler, Gregerson, Holland, and who can forget Cecil. There are risks period that’s life. Braves took a chance and if it works they are serious contenders. The Cards are still paying for Leake, Fowler, Gregerson, and Cecil.

ParticipantAlways the bridesmaid.

ParticipantWell down goes Plan B now Plan C is Goldy which I have no interest. Plan A is still my choice.
NJ315
ParticipantTrying to sign is what they do best.
NJ315
ParticipantWell Goldy will be here for only 1 year. Do you think they are going to sign him long-term at age 32? So no need to worry about how well or not he will age not our problem. As far as Donaldson I don’t want him either but he costs only money. You will need to make sure that the comp pick for Goldy is better than what you gave up to get him.
NJ315
ParticipantI agree if we go to Plan B lets roll the dice on Donaldson.

ParticipantWe will always competing for free agents with other teams. By your theory we will always be outbid by deep pocket, big market teams. It seems that has been true. Then plan B gets us Leake or Fowler. That leaves two options, getting lucky in the draft without a pick like Pujols or tanking and get high picks like the Cubs. If you can’t draft them you have to buy them. My interest in Harper is higher because of his age you are buying his prime. Is he great not, is he what we need yes. But I have no doubt some combo of the tarde with Arizona, and/or Donaldson is what we will get. Would that work who knows but it hasn’t lately. Those gamers on the wrong side of 30 have not worked out since Beltran. I rather do nothing and see what we have and I know that puts me in a minority of one. I am tired of moving onto the next best plan and the thought of Carp playing third is worrisome.
NJ315
ParticipantWhy do you care? The Cards won’t sign so why are so worked up? He makes this team better, yes he will overpriced but so are 95% of big contracts. Stick with the cheap older gamers they will keep signing it has worked so well the last few years.

ParticipantUnderstood. But they won’t sign him because Plans B or C and even D will be less riskier. I Harper flops they will never live it down, if Harper flops with another team they will be hailed as visionary. If Goldy or Donaldson flops it was a good try.

ParticipantI know you don’t like it. But plans B and C have been tried and failed. Anybody could be a bust of course but unless you get lucky and draft the next superstar you will have to buy one. It is rare for a free agent to hit the market at 26 I would be all in and take my chances with him. Plan B and C are as risky but without the higher reward factor if they work out. Like I said I am not a huge fan of Harper but he is everything we need and only 26. He costs money and lot of it but no prospects. But no worries we will see Plan B and C. I will not be happy but I will always root for them.

ParticipantGoldy not only has 1 yr of control, but is 31, hits right, will move Carp to 3rd. No thanks
I rather take my risks with the 26 year old lefty hitter.
I rather sign Donaldson than trade for Goldy but my preference is to do nothing if they don’t sign Harper. Until this team takes the risk of signing a superstar things won’t change. Of course is a huge risk, of course there are no guarantees that it will work out that is why is call a risk. But Harper makes the lineup better. I don’t care for Harper but ha can be a difference maker for the Cards and I can live with him on my team.
Other than that I am not excited for any other moves.

ParticipantThey have the money to sign Harper. Unless Harper takes less money to play somewhere else or flatly says he won’t come to St. Louis not getting him is a bust.
NJ315
ParticipantAgreed Harper or bust for me.

ParticipantThey may be better but just not good enough. One day the will wake up and pay for an elite player for now keep patching it up as best they can.
NJ315
ParticipantPass on Machado. Harper or wait until next year.
NJ315
ParticipantGood start.
NJ315
ParticipantI dislike Boston more than any other team except the Cubs. Go LA!
