Umpire is indeed having a bad night judging balls and strikes. Looked like Jordan’s third strike was really ball 4, but closer. I don’t think I’ve seen a challenge where they don’t say how many inches off it was.

    Huge for Walker there!

Just noticed that all four of the Cards’ bench players now have positive fWARs.
    Pages .6
    Torres .4
    Velasquez .2
    Fermin .1

All 6 position players with negative fWAR are now at AAA (Gorman, Scott, Saggese, Pozo, Prieto) or the DL (Urias)

And with runners at 2nd and 3rd, we’ll see if Leahy can manage the fifth…

Peoria wins and is 16-5 in their last 21 games.

Memphis wins and at least will keep a tie with Nashville for the league lead for the first half. Nashville trails 7-4 after 8.

Dinner was carryout of broiled swordfish with a baked potato and corn on the cob. Then I had the “small” ice cream (amaretto, cherry, chocolate) and it was maybe the largest ice cream I’ve stared at since I was in college. Nearly half of it is in the freezer….

Radar looks like they should soon have a window of an hour or so, but I’d bet there will be a delay later.

That’s a lot of bullpen guys! Especially because I could see Dobbins doing the long relief/piggyback thing for a stretch.

I just went back and watched the video of Hence. After the 5th pitch to the last batter, he shook his hand and the trainer came out and looked. Blister? Fingernail? Regardless, he threw a couple practice pitches then came back with a pitch low in the zone for a foul ball then at the top for a whiff on his fastest pitch of the day. His body language looked good to me. We might just see him this year.

Good to see Jordan get that first single. I didn’t expect him to be good about laying off some close pitches.

Hence pitched the 7th for Memphis and got a grounder and two K’s. Mostly 4 seamers and sinkers, both of which hit 95. Last was 95.7.

And also Roycroft up, Dobbins down.

Williams gets the three rookie lefties in the 9th, game over, 5-4 Mets. Going to NYC, I would have been happy with 2 of 3, but today’s game was there for us to grab the sweep. On to Minnesota. They’re 31-39 on the season and have lost 6 of their last 10.

It will be Crooks, Gorman (or Torres as PH?) and Church (and hopefully Wetherholt and the rest of the top of the lineup) facing Williams in the 9th. Williams hasn’t pitched in 4 days. Lefties have a .783 OPS against him so far this year.

After 2, I would not have guessed the score would be 4-4 at the stretch. It doesn’t stay that way as Soto unknots the game on a two strike solo HR.

Memphis jumps out to the lead 5-0 in the top of the first in the second game of their doubleheader. Memphis is tied with Nashville for the division lead, 3.5 up on the third place team. The Redbirds play four more (including this game) at Norfolk then host Nashville for 6 to end the first half. Memphis and Nashville haven’t met yet this year.

Still tied after 6 as Soriano has a super efficient inning. They didn’t show one out on MLB as the ball apparently was very high in the air and the wind blew it back fair for Noot to get the out.

Yup, should have had Soto at the plate dead to rights.

Brand new ballgame after 5, tied at 4. Hopefully the Mets’ pen is feeling the weight of the work from the last two days.

Memphis wins the first game, 7-0. Austin Love got the 7th, fanned the first two, walked a batter on four pitches, and ended the game on a lineout. Had a couple pitches at 98.7.

Two really strong games by Mathews in a row.

Another inning, another zero runs, zero hits, zero walks and one K for Mathews, who hit 94.1 on one pitch. 79 pitches through 6.

If I didn’t know the game was in NYC, I’d assume the wind was blowing out at Wrigley or the AC was blowing out at the Homerdome!

Memphis is up 7-0 through 5. Mathews’ line so far: 5 ip, 3 h, 0 r, 1 bb, 5 K. He just hit 95.3 to the last batter in the 5th. 71 pitches

If the Cards can hold at least a 6 run lead, it will be the first time they’ll have won back to back games by at least 6 since May 14 and 16 last year, when they beat the Phils 14-7, then the Royals 10-3. And if Pallante wins, he’ll be tied for 5th most wins in the NL this year and on a pace for 17 for the season.

Thanks, Pugs. I’ll say only that I had a strawberry shake for dessert to settle the nerves about the din din streak. I’ll keep dreaming of some day winning twice in a row….

After a 3-9 stretch, the Cards win 5 in a row and have a strong lead (7-2…now 8-2) as I write this. Encouraging to see them react to the roster shakeup with some good ball. I know there was concern about clubhouse chemistry.

I heard Kyle’s take that Mathews would be the 2nd best pitcher on the team, after May (the pitcher, not the month). He was rained out tonight, so guess we’ll see if he can come close to repeating tomorrow instead. Given how May looks, I wonder if this team might actually be dangerous in postseason. Rotation of May, Mathews, McGreevy, Dobbins, with Libby and Leahy bolstering the bullpen. A team for which there were no expectations. If they weather the 14 games before the all-star break, I would be really reluctant to sell off.

Pugs gave me co-honors on din-din last night, and dangled a prize to the person who repeats. The pressure is too much for me to report anything tonight!

The bottom 5 of the lineup had 3 hits and two walks, and that’s even with Noot, Winn, and Crook going a combined 0-12. Different ones of these guys can be productive on a given night, whereas with Pages and Scott, well, it didn’t feel that way.

    1td-

When I looked it up, I figured there would be no complete games at all!

And if Pepe le Pew is involved, I’ll have to buy a bottle!

Statmuse says there have been 4 complete game shutouts this year. As best I can tell there have been all of 7 complete games in all of MLB for the year.

Your point made me look at Foghorn Leghorn and sauvignon blanc and I see there is a Foghorn winery that puts out that wine. Dunno of it’s a relation!

The last time the Cards scored 6 in a game May started was his second game of the year. Hopefully he doesn’t get vapors!

I’m on the road so din-din tonight was the pre-fix at a local joint–salad, salmon with rice and zuccini/squash/broccoli sides, vanilla ice cream and a glass of the house sauvignon blanc.

Re Hence’s inning, Gameday indicated that he mostly relied on his changeup. I don’t recall seeing a fastball above 91. Maybe I missed a pitch or two. Not sure what that means.

The next 6 series, the Cards have 12 games against teams with losing records and 7 with teams of records 33-31 and 34-31. That’s before 14 games against Atlanta, Milwaukee, and the Cubs. It would be nice to see the Cards beat up the teams they face the rest of the month to save up for the challenging games before the all-star break.

The difficulty for the Peoria rotation guys that could get promoted is that all the guys in the Springfield rotation seem deserving of their spot. Doyle, Cijntje, Molina, Lin, Davis.

Fermin started at 3B 127 times while in the minors and has 18 MLB starts there. Not the worst option if they option Gorman.

Thanks, Brian. I will hope that Church can be an only slightly below average hitting CF then. That also would call for Noot being traded either at deadline or in the offseason to give Baez his shot. Hate to see Noot go, but I trust this front office.
