I really don’t see how the Cardinals could trade Gray without saying they would be lucky to win 70 games next year. They don’t have enough legitimate starting pitching candidates for 2026 as it stands right now.
With this loss by the Cardinals, I would even take a Cubs sweep this weekend to better our draft position. I can’t believe I’m saying that.
Cardinals keep trying to ruin their draft position by keeping their faint playoff hopes alive. Win 9-8 by scoring 2 runs in the 9th.
I think the Cardinals need to put in a claim for Alek Manoah. Signing a hurt Blue Jay pitcher worked out pretty good a little over 20 years ago. What’s it going to hurt?
Jnevel, the Cardinals have Donovan, Saggese, Fermin, Wetherholt, and Gorman to play 3b and 2b. I know Gorman seems like a reach but compare his stats for 2025 vs. Arenado for 2025.
The OF is a much greater need.
To be a contender as a decent playoff team, what does the team need? At least 2 quality starting pitchers while retaining Gray. At least 1 all star caliber OF. That’s a starting point then you may need another OF upgrade. That could be done through free agency but it would take about $60-$65 million.
The Cardinals win and are still, technically, in the running for a wild card spot. I believe their elimination number is 3. The Reds face the Pirates and the Brewers. The Mets face the Cubs and the Marlins. The Diamondbacks face the Dodgers and Padres. We are currently 3.5 games out of the wild card with 5 games to play.
I would say the Cardinals got value out of Gray. Their record in games he started was 21-10. They need at least 2 more starting pitchers that allow the team to win around 2/3 of his starts.
The Cardinals were 18-36 in games started by Pallante and Fedde.
The limited amount I’ve watched Church, he seemed like he has the tools to succeed. I think he needs some more time to adjust. He looks like he could be a lot better hitter than Scott. I like Church’s defense in CF, too. His arm is light years better than Scott.
Bling, Wetherholt has started 20 games this year at 2b without an error. He has started 10 games at 3b with 2 errors and a .936 fielding %. What that tells me is that Wetherholt can handle 2b. It also tells me that he is versatile enough to handle any of the infield positions. I am not going to judge what position he will play in the majors based on what he has played in the last 30 days. He won’t play 3b regularly with Arenado on the team. He won’t play SS regularly with Winn on the team. That leaves 2b that he doesn’t have someone blocking him. Donovan can move to LF.
This is not what I expect the Cardinals will do, but what I would like to see them do:
1. Let Mikolas walk.
2. Non-tender/outright King, Munoz, Roycroft, Pozo, Siani and Rom.
3. Trade Gorman and Walker.
4. Sign Kyle Tucker or Cody Bellinger.
5. Sign Max Scherzer to a 1 year contract with an option for a 2nd year.
6. Sign Zac Gallen to a 3 year contract (lower base with incentives) with an opt out after 2026 for him to rebuild his value.
7. Sign Maton.
8. Give Wetherholt the runway to win the 2b job.
9. Move Pallante to the pen or trade him.That would give the Cardinals an opportunity to be very competitive. It would also open opportunities for upcoming talent to fill in holes when they are ready and not rushed to the majors.
The amazing part about this season is that the Cardinals could very easily be 2 games behind the Mets for the final wild card spot. They had a chance to win the final game with Seattle. They could have won the game against the Brewers when they were up 6-1. They could have taken another game against the Reds in this series. That’s 3 wins to put them tied with the Diamondbacks just 2 games back.
I’m not watching the game. GameDay says there was an injury delay when Liberatore came out of the game. What is the deal with that?
BW, agree 100%. Call a turd, a turd and not fertilizer. Give the fans a realistic plan and they will overlook some of bad times.
Ozzie Smith had a career OBP of .337. His first season with a .350 OBP was in 1985 when he was 30 years old. He never had an OBP over .315 until 1982 when he was 27. Winn is only 23 and in his 3rd ML season. Ozzie didn’t make it to the majors until he was 23.
We’ll Rat, you will be glad to know the Cardinals are currently ahead while only hitting .222 for the game.
After I turn off the game, Herrera comes through with the home run to put the Cardinals up 2-1. It looks like I should have shut the game off a long time ago.
A’s are lucky to be still be ahead. The Cardinals are hitting the ball hard but they seem to always have an As player near enough to field it. Severino is making good pitches, though. Hitting the edges with some velocity and getting a couple of close calls.
To me, it is a matter that the Cardinals need to show they are willing to do whatever it takes to put a world series caliber team on the field. They can’t keep reducing payroll and blame it on attendance. They need to upgrade the roster. They are still at the point that I can’t tell if they are willing to do that. It’s time for ownership to lose some money in the short term to rebuild this for the long term profit.
Herrera hits a solo home run in the top of the first. Liberatore gives up 2 in the bottom half. 2-1 Reds after 1 inning.
Pallante back out in the fifth to save the bullpen. Gorman put the Cardinals on the board in the bottom of the fourth with a long home run. 8-2 Pirates.
