They had to know going from Molina to Contreras wasn’t going to be seamless. Molina is one of a kind and likely will never be replicated.
Rosenthal said in his article today that the Braves traded the “other Contreras” for the same reason, yet we don’t hear the Brewers complaining.
Seems to me having a better pitching staff is the difference.
In any event, the whole thing was handled very poorly.
If you believe what Contreras said Yadi told him in a phone call, Yadi was watching the games and said the pitchers weren’t executing.
It is self-serving, I get it. But I believe at least part of it was pitchers not executing.
Well, Jack Flaherty excusing his terrible start by blaming “pitches that don’t make sense” in the post game interviews, likely got the ball rolling. No reporter is going to miss that, and will run with it.
Like I said previously, Jack has sucked before, even with Yadi behind the plate.
As for Waino, has he even thrown to Contreras? If he did it was in his short spring training. Why would his returning spark this? Jack mouthed off before Waino came back.
Rosenthal now has a “they should have known better” article up. Figures he might as well capitalize on the mayhem while he has a chance.
I’d like to know who thought publicly humiliating Willson was the way to go. There is a tactic that never backfires.
I noticed that Mo shot down the shake off alternative by arguing the pitch clock, but pitch com was not mentioned. Pitchers can call their own pitches relatively easy now you know. And what better way to learn your pitchers?
There is some incomprehensible word salad from Marmol in three tweets from Jeff Jones about the Contreras situation. I am not posting it here.
The pitchers have pitch com and can call their own pitches. They can also just shake off and not a throw a pitch they don’t agree with. This is why I don’t have a clue why this is happening. Seems like the easiest fix to me, rather than scapegoating your brand new catcher and possibly ruining the relationship for good.
If it is the pitcher who doesn’t want to use pitch com but instead blame Contreras, well then I have no sympathy, either call your own pitches or shut the **ll up.
Not letting your 87 M dollar catcher catch for stupid and easily fixed reasons is imbecilic to the extreme.
I read that Dayn Perry article. In it Perry interprets Flaherty’s comments as an indictment on Contreras. I don’t know if that is what Flaherty meant or not.
However, if that is indeed what Flaherty meant, then I suggest Jack take a look in the mirror because he sucked when he pitched to Yadi.
I hope Perry misunderstood. I like Jack but he has some responsibility in all this.

The Cardinals aren’t just considering using Willson Contreras in the outfield. They will be.
Contreras won’t catch much over the next couple of weeks. He’ll be used primarily as a DH and corner outfielder. More soon on @TheAthleticMLB

Looks like OF clarity is now our catcher playing in the OF.
Oh boy. If people think our OF defense is bad now, it is going to get much worse if Marmol puts Yepez out there.
I agree with Brian, the problem is the pitching, not the defense. The lack of the shift has very little effect on outfield defense. Our infield defense may be suffering a little, but the recent errors is more likely the result of trying too hard to compensate for everything else that is going wrong.
The team definitely has been downgraded defensively in the outfield but not enough to be causing these problems. We had good outfield defense before because we had Bader out there and he covered a lot of ground that our current outfield is not able to do. Bader was just multiple levels better than anyone else we had, but that is water under the bridge, he’s gone.
Carlson is fine, he is an average to slightly above average CF. He could take better routes on occasion, but that can be improved. What can’t be improved is his speed, which isn’t elite. The bigger problem for him is at the plate. Playing him everyday in CF has the tradeoff of lack of production against RHP.
Regardless, as Sarris said, we have a pitching problem. The lack of offensive production can be improved by playing better, as multiple players have themselves expressed multiple times.

Matz, who is 0-4, is scheduled to throw a bullpen session today and work on the shape and sharpness of his curveball. That pitch has been a problem for weeks.

Firing the manager for players who aren’t doing their job makes no sense whatsoever.
Any time a team plays badly the first person that everyone turns on is the manager. More often than not it is not the fault of the manager.
Has Marmol always made good decisions? No. I would bet he would agree with that.

Marmol didn’t put this roster together. He can’t make the offense play better or the mediocre pitching staff not be mediocre.The fact is the offense didn’t score enough and we don’t have the shut down pitching to compensate for that.
It’s damn frustrating. I feel it just like everyone else. But it is what it is and the team just has to play through it.
Nothing wrong with fans expressing their frustration. The owners and the front office need to hear it as well as the team.
Also I disagree about Helsley. He had a slow start but he looked good tonight. Helsley just has better stuff than Gio.
Also Gio has a history of doing this. Think back over the last couple of seasons about how many times he blew it in the ninth.
The offense just has to score more runs to compensate for the not very good pitching.
Until they do that this will keep happening.
It was good to see Carlson hit a RHP. His numbers against RHP have been horrible. I hope this is a trend and not a one-off.
I believe (but Brian is free to correct me), that if he goes on the 60 day IL he remains with the Cardinals but he is not free of the Rule 5 requirements. Should he be out the entire season, the Rule 5 requirements will remain for the 2024 season.
Jake Woodford will be available out of the Cardinals bullpen starting tomorrow.
The team is evaluating next steps for improvement and usage for Steven Matz. Marmol stopped short of saying he’d definitely make his next start.
