Good news, I saw this in an article on the Fansided blog talking about Liberatore:
“has some impressive advanced metrics which warrant a call-up.”
Let’s hope MLB hitters can’t hit advanced metrics.
Zuniga’s stuff looked good. Hicks seems to be coming around.
I’d bet as others have said that Wainwright replaces Woodford and Liberatore replaces Matz.
Flaherty, Montgomery, and Mikolas will hang in.
The bullpen looks like it could actually be pretty good but Marmol simply cannot let Helsley and Gallegos rot on the bench. They need to pitch some at least 2 out of 5 games even if we are losing.
The hitting is a puzzle. I sure thought this lineup would be more consistent with run production.
Sure Arenado is in a slump but it’s more than just one guy.
It could be all the constant lineup composition and juggling but then again, like everyone else, I’m just trying to make sense out of this trainwreck.
Zuniga missed the zone often enough and by far enough with 100 mph that batters couldn’t be comfortable standing in. I don’t think you strike out Trout if he’s comfortable. Zuniga will be intriguing to watch.

Jake Woodford will be available out of the Cardinals bullpen starting tomorrow.
The team is evaluating next steps for improvement and usage for Steven Matz. Marmol stopped short of saying he’d definitely make his next start.

I believe (but Brian is free to correct me), that if he goes on the 60 day IL he remains with the Cardinals but he is not free of the Rule 5 requirements. Should he be out the entire season, the Rule 5 requirements will remain for the 2024 season.
The difference with Rule 5 guys going on the IL is they must spend 90 days on the active roster to clear those requirements for the next season. So it wouldn’t be a full-year do-over in 2024. If the Cards want to keep him, they’d clear the Rule 5 restrictions about July, provided he stays on the active roster next season.
Speaking of bum shoulder guys, hopefully Graceffo isn’t going to be one. According to Katie Woo (The Athletic) Graceffo is on the IL with shoulder inflammation. (Brian had it in a member article yesterday, but now I’m seeing it reported elsewhere by the less well connected johnny come latelies.)
If I am reading this article correctly it says Rodriguez will be under rule 5 restrictions next year. The article doesn’t say if it is for the entire year or not.

Yep, gscott. Say all goes well next year and he’s active for the first 90 days, then in July they’d be free to option him if they needed to.
Had he accumulated 90 days on the active roster this year before his season ending injury, Rule 5 restrictions would not exist at all for next season.
Here’s an excerpt from the MLB glossary on Rule 5:
A Rule 5 Draft pick can be placed on the Major League injured list, but he must be active for a minimum of 90 days to avoid being subject to the aforementioned roster restrictions in the next campaign.
Something to consider. Liberatore’s regular day to pitch would be today, but he has been pushed off to Saturday. At this point, St. Louis’ weekend starters appear to be Monty on Friday and Waino on Saturday (not yet formally announced). Sunday would be Matz’ regular turn, but they have not committed to him making that start. It seems they are positioning Liberatore to be available should they make the change.
Matz looked ok after a rough 1st, a pattern we’ve seen from Wainwright at times. It will be interesting to see what happens with the rotation, as well as how Zuniga is used. I personally have zero confidence any of it will work or even make sense.
It is worth noting that McGreevy looked ok yesterday, but not what you could call dominant. Pallante followed and got roughed up. Graceffo is on the shelf. So the 5 now in the rotation plus Waino and Libby is all there is.

I think Matz’s days in the rotation are numbered, thankfully. They obviously aren’t going to DFA him because of the money owed to him so I assume he will go to the pen or they will find an injury. If he does go to the pen who in the pen goes down to Memphis? Zuniga? Jo Jo?
The focus of the discussion was on year 2, but I want to make a clarification on year 1.
This season, he would have satisfied his Rule 5 status with at least 90 days on the active MLB roster, but would not lose his Rule 5 qualification until the end of this season.
For example, say he was hurt on his 91st day active this year. If he came off the IL later in the season, he still would be under the Rule 5 stipulations for the rest of this season (can’t be optioned to the minors). But next season, the requirements would be gone due to the 90+ days active earlier.
