I suspect we may see Brycen Mautz in the near future. Svanson, Graceffo and Gastelum are the only relievers with options.
Bloom is only up for changes around the margins, given the plan he set out at the beginning of the season. It’s sink or swim with the team we have for the most part, I don’t see the deadline changing that much if at all.
Bats that have gone cold and a bullpen that couldn’t get a little league team out. What a mess this team is.
Personally, I think Pages is a waste of a roster spot. I am sure he is well liked and all that, but to me he serves no purpose on a rebuilding club with a boatload of catchers in the pipeline. He doesn’t hit well, and I think this vaunted ability to handle a pitching staff is overblown. The pitchers seem to do just fine without him playing as much.
Crooks needs to play more, in my opinion. I have always thought that having three catchers was counter productive. It has gotten a little better since they cut Pedro Pages playing time.
If I had my druthers (which I don’t), I would like to have Herrera moved off catcher, Leo Bernal brought up and have he and Crooks duel it out. Get some good competition going.
I have seen both play quite a bit in the minors. They are both good defensive catchers, though I give Crooks the slight edge. Crooks has not been able to show what he can do with the present catching situation.
He needs more playing time and a good long runway to show if he can catch at the major league level. He is not getting it.
I agree with Brian. As I said in my previous post, I don’t have a strong urge to trade Burleson. But if a decision was made to trade him, I would not be upset about it.
Herrera is having a lesser season offensively this year than previous years. That does not concern me. My only complaint about Herrera is that he is not a good defensive catcher, and I would prefer he not catch. I can’t say there is a link, but he hit much better last season when he wasn’t catching.
It is unlikely that either Burleson or Herrera will be traded so the discussion is really academic.
Burleson isn’t what the Cardinals need. They need pitching, and lots of it.
I don’t think Burleson is a better all around player, than say, Wetherholt. He runs hot and cold and is bad against left handed pitching. He is also older than all the other regular position players except Nootbaar. If the team is going for the youth movement, Burleson doesn’t really fit the bill.
If they traded Burleson, Herrera could move to first base. He has played it before in the Winter Leagues.
Herrera is slumping, it happens to all players at some time. I see it as temporary. He shouldn’t catch, but he is one of our best hitters when he is on.
I don’t have a strong urge to trade Burleson, but if Bloom can get a decent return, why not?
Romero doesn’t have injury concerns. He had an appendectomy. No team is going to be worried about that.
What the return is depends on the team and what their needs are. A team who badly needs a right handed pitcher may give you more than some other team for May.
Nootbaar is an on-base machine. He has always been one. Those guys are valuable. Will he get a top prospect? Not likely, but the return is not going to be nothing. Besides, the point is to trade those with less years of control and open up a spot for a younger player.
I don’t have a strong opinion about trading Burleson. I would not trade Herrera but I would move him off the catcher position.
I don’t think trading Baez is likely at this point. I do agree he has swing and miss and chase issues.
At a minimum, my guess would be May, Romero, and Nootbaar are getting traded. It wouldn’t surprise me if there were more.
Derrick Goold wrote that Maniscalco signed an over slot deal, but I don’t have a PD subscription so I don’t know the number.

Yes they do. They went back to wearing their team jerseys last year.
They don’t for the events prior to the game, like the Home Run Derby, but they do for the game.

McGonigle is two years younger than Wetherholt. He is also performing at a higher level right now. The two players aren’t comparable.
There are many things that go into a decision like this. For some players, money is not the only consideration.

Just off the top of my head I can think of several successful MLB pitchers with a history of chronic injury
Chris Carpenter (5 arm surgeries)
Jack Flaherty (multiple trips to the IL with arm problems)
Adam Wainwright had multiple arm problems over his long career.

Pitchers have injuries. Throwing a baseball over a long period of time is not normal behavior.
Injured pitchers are a staple of baseball. Their are 43 MLB pitchers currently out with Tommy John surgery.
There are 114 pitchers out with non-TJ injuries (these include internal brace surgeries)

Thanks. With respect to the switch hitter aspect of Bernal, I noticed that he has fairly glaring splits this season. He is much better against lefties than righties. That wasn’t the case in previous years.
I wonder if this is just an anomaly based on the hitting environment he is in this season.
Took a brief look at the new list. I am most interested in the catcher situation since the Cardinals seem intent on keeping Herrera away from catching (not complaining per se, his defense is an issue). But at some point I would assume the team will move away from Pages and Pozo (at least I hope so) and move on to Crooks and Bernal. I see in your list you have Crooks one spot ahead of Bernal. MLB Pipeline just adjusted their list, and though they moved Crooks up one spot, they still have Bernal ahead of him.
What is your assessment of the difference between the two, and is it too small of a difference to be a real difference (if that makes any sense)?
It was just announced that Fedde will start on Saturday.
The FCL team is currently beating the Mets’ FCL team so I am happy to see at least one of our teams can beat the Mets.😊
Bryan Torres is putting up pretty good numbers. He doesn’t have much power though.
He seems to be a Donovan type, but I haven’t seen enough defense to judge though I don’t get the impression he is gold glove caliber.
I need to watch more Memphis games. I have plenty of time now.
