Someone should have told Gui the game was still being played and he wasn’t just out there throwing batting practice. Ugh. His pitches were terrible. We just keep finding ways to lose.
May 3, 2023 at 9:31 pm #218840Gallegos laid an egg tonight but to be honest Helsley hasn’t looked good in the ninth in quite some time. It could be that we really don’t have a closer.
May 3, 2023 at 9:31 pm #218841Gio’s been effective in the past, but never as a 9th inning guy.
May 3, 2023 at 9:32 pm #218842Rats while they didn’t lose any ground on that 10 game deficit, they fell to 11 games under and officially the worst record in the NL. Well done, Cardinals, well done.
May 3, 2023 at 9:32 pm #218843Helsley hasn’t looked good in the ninth since he stumbled off the mound in Pittsburgh late last year.
May 3, 2023 at 9:32 pm #218844The offense just has to score more runs to compensate for the not very good pitching.
Until they do that this will keep happening.
May 3, 2023 at 9:33 pm #218845Unreal how this club just does not close things out. They give up a lot of hits after getting ahead in the count 0 and 2. They don’t get the big hit to all but shut the door. They don’t finish off hitters.
What a mess this season has been so far.
May 3, 2023 at 9:34 pm #218846I can’t wait to hear how the front office spins “not going to sell at the deadline” this year.
May 3, 2023 at 9:34 pm #218847The genuine shame is that they had a good chance to make up ground on every team in the NLC.
May 3, 2023 at 9:36 pm #218848I had a bad feeling when they couldn’t provide a softer cushion in the home half of the 8th.
May 3, 2023 at 9:36 pm #218849If you missed it, 1td, they showed Girsch in the box. Caray said Girsch acknowledged there are multiple problems. He said Girsch also said the “early” excuse won’t cut it now that we are in May and Caray found it “refreshing” for Girsch to say that. What does that even mean? What’s not refreshing is they failed to deliver on the primary, most glaring weakness for yet another season.
Patches are cool, though.
May 3, 2023 at 9:40 pm #218850Also I disagree about Helsley. He had a slow start but he looked good tonight. Helsley just has better stuff than Gio.
Also Gio has a history of doing this. Think back over the last couple of seasons about how many times he blew it in the ninth.
May 3, 2023 at 9:47 pm #218851Not sure, and somebody may have a quote from Oli or Blake to correct me, but it doesn’t seem to me they have merely swapped Helsley and Gio as 8th and 9th inning guys. The two or three times I’ve seen Helsley come in before the 9th, I thought it was more likely because they thought it was a high leverage situation where they wanted to go with their best power pitcher. Just using the school of thought to go with the best pitcher in the 7th or 8th if that’s when potentially the biggest threat presents itself.
May 3, 2023 at 9:50 pm #218852Yeah, I saw him, Euro. Johnny must have needed a night off and decided to throw his secretary into the proverbial fire. And yeah, I like our patches better than LA’s.
May 3, 2023 at 9:50 pm #218853Euro D, I concur with your comments on Girsch. What the heck is he taking about? Can’t use the “it’s still early” excuse any more? Rick Horton is still playing up that comment, but it’s preposterous coming from the GM in my opinion. It makes it sound like, as an organization, they are looking for excuses for this poor record. They ought to be addressing positive steps they are taking, not excuses. Marmol just commented that they’ll bounce back, they’ve faced adversity before, they’ve been tested, this will show what they’re made of, etc., etc., etc., blah, blah, blah. He’s been saying that for weeks now, and they haven’t “bounced back,” and are now the NL cellar dwellers. Not surprised at all they heard it from the fans tonight.

ParticipantMy thoughts on ninth inning guys. I’ve never been a fan of gallegos in that role. He’s never excelled there. At least helsley had a good run with it so I trust him more. The problem with helsley is he doesn’t really have great movement on most of his pitches. Hicks and gallegos do but they don’t have the mind set which is just as important. But yes maybe we don’t have that guy. Even if we did, I’m not sure marmol would use him right.
May 3, 2023 at 10:04 pm #218856On the post game presser the Cardinal field manager says, “We’ve been tested quite a bit, this fits right into that bucket of being tested even more, and we’ll find out what we’re made of”…I guess what he’s driving at is that this game fits right into what the content of the bucket genuinely consists and is made of…I won’t say what I think’s in the bucket, but it has an extremely offensive odor…As for the concept of what he terms a “test,” he had better either learn some answers or sneak some crib notes.
May 3, 2023 at 10:08 pm #218858The offense just has to score more runs to compensate for the not very good pitching.
I’ve heard that too. You definitely need to score more runs than your opponent to win the game, lol.
May 3, 2023 at 10:08 pm #218859Any time a team plays badly the first person that everyone turns on is the manager. More often than not it is not the fault of the manager.
Has Marmol always made good decisions? No. I would bet he would agree with that.
‘
Marmol didn’t put this roster together. He can’t make the offense play better or the mediocre pitching staff not be mediocre. The fact is the offense didn’t score enough and we don’t have the shut down pitching to compensate for that.
It’s damn frustrating. I feel it just like everyone else. But it is what it is and the team just has to play through it.
Nothing wrong with fans expressing their frustration. The owners and the front office need to hear it as well as the team.
May 3, 2023 at 10:15 pm #218862It is what it is. I look at the players we have and it just doesn’t seem like this is the worst team in the National League – and they aren’t – but you know what else they aren’t?
They aren’t a playoff team. Even with 3 Wild Card slots.
The FO has been playing with fire for most of a decade now. They didn’t make the playoffs for three year 16 – 18 but they didn’t crater either. This time their monkeying around has completely backfired and they got burned.
Yes I am aware that there have been teams that recovered from poor starts to make the playoffs and advance. But most if not all of those teams were only behind a few teams to climb over – the Cardinals are now behind every team in the league.
May 3, 2023 at 10:18 pm #218863At 10-21 and having watched almost every game I will say that the entire organization is to blame – from the FO to the manager to the coaches to the players.
If they catch fire they might be back to .500 by the beginning of June and then once you get to .500 you can build from there. Personally I don’t think it’s going to happen – but I recognize the fact that it could.
May 3, 2023 at 10:21 pm #218864This is beginning to look like a season that proves very useful in identifying tell tale signs that provide a near foolproof method of formulating a failsafe system designed to avert utter disaster. It could well prove to be both an effective and time honored system, so be certain to see that it’s well documented and accurately archived.
May 3, 2023 at 10:22 pm #218865Yeah, it’s certainly possible, ZTR, but first they have to win a game.
May 3, 2023 at 10:28 pm #218866All managers and human beings make bad decisions. My primary issue with the current Redbird manager is that he’s never owned a solitary one of them. The fact that he hasn’t genuinely calls me to question his character.
May 3, 2023 at 10:39 pm #218869On the bright side there is a good chance they will have a top 3 pick in the 24 draft
