Ohtani is Babe Ruth. I have not watched him before and I will take the time today to do it.

I can’t recall another player since the Bambino with this skill set and I think his last game was in 1935?

This is the kind of draw that Mikolas got all season in 2022. If we were playing .500 ball or better, I would say “just play through”, to use a golf analogy. But we’re only winning 1/3 of our games, and lately none at all.
I would bring up a sacrifcial lamb to oppose Ohtani, in effect conceding the game. Then, maybe Mikolas and Flaherty can win back to back games.
The logic that says you can’t duck an elite starter, because you’re afraid what people will think of you, that got us swept by the Dodgers.

Oli might as well let the bench guys take some hacks, who knows.

Well. I still like to watch the game of baseball, even if we lose, as long as I can keep myself from investing excessive emotion in the standings.

Today Bernie told us about how we are getting inadequate offense from the outfielders. We knew that, but now we now it even more. Thanks Bernie. One thing I did learn is Walker’s hitting a buck fifty in Memphis. Why should there be any good news.

Should we have packaged Walker in a trade for Juan Soto last year?

And I’ve said this a million times – WHY ON EARTH DO PEOPLE THINK NOOTBAAR IS GOING TO BE SO GREAT?????

No we shouldn’t have. Soto is currently hitting .222 while making $23M.

All of our potential trade chips are losing value due to poor performance. That’s not going to be helpful.

Rats, I bet you didn’t know that Nootbaar has been the best outfielder in terms of offense on the team this year. No one I’ve seen said he is THE GUY, but he isn’t the problem, either. That is why I find it to be odd that he is your whipping boy.

At least they’re not playing a doubleheader today.

If we had three outfielders playing better than Noot, he’d be out of a job.

Yeah, Lars is the best of our current outfielders. Carlson can’t hit RHP so he has limited usefulness. O’Neill isn’t being the good O’Neill, and Burleson is the worst defender of the bunch.

He’d probably get sent down to Memphis. Speaking of which, Walker still has the second highest OPS among the Cardinals outfielders.

That speaks volumes for how that OF clarity thing is working out.

That pitching match-up looks lopsided “on paper.” Looks like another one in the loss column, although Mikolas has pitched better of late.

I am not aware of anyone saying Nootbaar is going to be great. My opinion of Lars is he is a great team guy – high energy, rooting for everyone to do well, rejoicing very demonstrably when they do. As for his production, he has not been great, but seems to get everything out of his ability that he can. Kind of a poor man’s Pete Rose, which I hope comes without the emotional immaturity that is part of Pete’s character, and eventually compromised his terrific on-field accomplishments.

Aside from being the most entertaining player on the team (which in these times is sorely needed) he has a very good eye for the strike zone and he has the highest walk percentage on the team by a large margin. In other words, he gets on base. Have to get on base to score runs.

We could use more Lars Nootbaars

Well, I would counter that with we could use more Paul Goldschmidts.

    Aim high.

Why aim low? What if you succeed?

My impression of The Nootz has always been that he’s no more than an extra OF’er who always puts forth an effort that is entirely faultless and extremely admirable. He’s also what I would term a genuine abnormality. A freak who defies the normally unalterable laws of simple arithmetic. I challenge anyone to show me some numbers that illustrate a career .231 hitter who flashes a career .344 OBP in over 530 PA’s. And that ain’t all. He’s the spitting image of a young Wayne Nooton…

He’s not a whipping boy. I just don’t think he’s as good as some on here think. One guy even said that in the off season he was the player that all the other teams wanted. And if he’s THE BEST outfielder we have then we are indeed in trouble. I’ve said before that O’Neill might be playing himself out of St. Louis with all of his strikeouts. He’s been in the big leagues six (6) years and only had one good season, that being 2021.

Irregardless, Nootbaar is a lifetime .239 hitter. That’s not very good. Not very good at all. And, yes, once again I realize he has a BAHIR of 12.39 and a UZG of 2.27 and a fWOW of 5.58 and a HFFR of 3.87.

Well Rats, you give him a little extra credit because he’s a little below a .239 career hitter at .231 for his career. However, I’m with you in the sense that he’s no more than an extra OF’er in regards to overall genuine talent.

Rats, if you would just slide the blinders a bit to the side and learn when OBP is, you would find out that Nootbaar has been very good at getting on base this season. In fact, he is best on the entire team, better than even Goldy. But instead, if you want to keep looking at batting average only, you risk missing the bigger picture.

Like I said before, no one is suggesting that Nootbaar is a star, but he is the top OF performer they have right now. May as well ride it.

Maybe the movie Moneyball is old enough now that you would watch it. In it, the lead characters learn that OBP can be used to their advantage. It was set in 2002.
