Most players in his case want the service time to eliminate any option they have; as once the 3rd option is gone they have to either go left or right with a player. And for Woodford either way is fine, as many teams would love to have him.Brian I totally disagree with you. Sure he has options, but if he’s a better pitcher than many who are making the team, he should be on the team to help the team WIN. The first game is just as important as the last game. We can’t just throw away games early in the season because he has a option! That is crazy.
There are plenty of arms that will be in AAA to help the MLB club when needed.Totally agree Lee. Woody needs to start on the roster as long reliever/spot starter; then when one or more of the 5 starters either get hurt or just don’t perform (its gonna happen, just when?), he can step in.
Wow. Woodford was dialed in. If he keeps this up, the only question OM should have is,..Is he a starter or a long reliever.? Waino does not give me much confidence, and I think everyone knows Jack will be on the DL very soon.
Gotta love this time of year. Everyone has that “can win it all” attitude.
Lets enjoy in now, as it doesn’t last long. Before you know it, all star break is here and more than 1/2 the teams are pretty much out of the picture.

starters: Monty, Miles, Jack, Matz, Waino.
pen: Hels, Gio, Thompson, Pallante, Woodford, Hicks, Stratton, Cabby. and as soon as Cabby fails, bring in Romero or Packy.. then VerHagen.
Hudson… Trade for a good bat/Outfielder.
Outfield is a mess… Carlson needs to figure it out early in the season, or needs to be sent back to AAA. Still not sold on Lars.? seems to be more flash than anything else. If O’Neil can stay healthy and regain his bat, he can be a good one. Anyone one of these guys start to fail, don’t hesitate with Walker, this kid is the real deal. (at least we think so.?).. kind of how Carlson was coming in from AAA, he was to be the next Big Star..? hasn’t happened.
Maybe some of these kids are being rushed and should get more reps in AAA.Katie, must not be of the belief that the best performing players should be on the team, regardless of the terrible contract situations… if the better pitchers are paid less, but offer better performance and chance of winning it should be a no brainer.

I think not allowing runs is the number 1 objective of a reliever, all the other stats are just stats.

not the guys who kicked butt last season, such as:

Romero——3.77I think Hudson will have a tough time getting back to his pre injury days. plus with the new time clock which is going to speed him up, and will be uncomfortable. Also, Libby needs a bunch of aaa innings to work on his stuff; he will be a 4-5 starter, maybe. And Matz…??? shoulder soreness always tends to show itself after some innings… he cannot be counted on past the all star break. by then the younger guns will/should be getting more and more work. Thompson, Woody & Palante.
I really think if he is given a honest chance at starting, Woodford makes the most of it and would keep the job. He needs a staff that supports him by giving him opportunities, which he clearly does not have now.
Also, I think we all know minor league stats don’t really mean squat… its the minors. except maybe aaa.

The cards need to let him go… I am sure another team or several will give him the chance he deserves.Starters will certainly be relying heavily on the bullpen: much the same as last year, maybe more.
Good thing the pen looks very strong. If we had to line up 8 guys today for the pen my choice would be the following:
1-Helsley
2-Gallegos
3-Pallante
4-Woodford
5-Hicks
6-Thompson
7-Hudson
8-Cabera
If Cabby falters as he did last year, then Romero, Naughton.Pretty sure Jack will be hurt before the All Star game, and maybe the same with Waino and Matz.
They have pitching depth, but keeping everyone happy and on board to start the season will be key.
I agree for the most part with Lee. Hicks & Cabby are ?, as they seem to have trouble at times finding the zone. I would say lets wait for ST and we should have a better idea then, but I actually think the front office already has 7-8 of the pitching slots filled. regardless of ST.Pick only one

3) Carlson
4) Woodford
