Unclear if wonks and polo shirters are one and the same. No double-dipping allowed, but there should be enough blame to pass around to everyone…
March 1, 2023 at 4:17 pm #213382Unclear if wonks and polo shirters are one and the same.
Admittedly, the distinction is nuanced, but it is real and it is important.
Wonks are desk sitters who know the mathematical and statistical sciences behind analytics, but, at best, know just enough about baseball to be dangerous.
The polo shirt crowd are carpet walkers who regularly venture outside, armed with the work product of the wonks, and interact with uniformed personnel. They think they know something about baseball (they read a lot), and just enough about analytics to be dangerous.
March 1, 2023 at 4:29 pm #213383I saw the mention of a guy named Juniel Querecuto earlier in the thread..Is that the guy in the photo that BW pointed out as a player who had played all 9 positions?
March 1, 2023 at 4:35 pm #213384I always wanted a shirt that came equipped with a small sewn on patch of an alligator being ridden by a polo player…I once asked an aisle clerk at the Wal-Mart if they sold such a shirt and she threatened to call the cops…
March 1, 2023 at 8:29 pm #2133911td, the guy in the picture is the secret weapon, Jose Oquendo.
March 1, 2023 at 8:37 pm #213393forsch31…Yeah, I need to drink more coffee, but you have to acknowledge that Juniel Querecuto rhymes with Jose Oquendo, or maybe I’m simply suffering from dyslexia…Haha!
March 1, 2023 at 8:42 pm #213394Querecuto and Motter were 2 names in the first spring training game that I had no idea who they were or how the Cardinals acquired them. Looking them up, I hope they don’t make the team or take playing time away from deserving prospects. Definitely look like organizational filler types unless I’m missing something.
March 1, 2023 at 9:30 pm #213397They are both decent minor league signings if we end up with injuries and need the depth. Motter hit 20 home runs at AAA last year and ran an OPS around.900. That would have been our 2nd best hitter at AAA last year. He’s old – like really old for AAA. But for an emergency backup, we could have done a lot worse. Querecuto hits ok and can play pretty much every position (all but Catcher I think). He is basically about the same as Kramer Robertson only even a little more versatile. They can push each other to see who gets more playing time at Memphis and is in line for emergency 5 day call-up guy.

Lol, how about a double espresso? I didn’t speak up like forsch did because I knew that you knew that was Oquendo. I figured you were trolling a poster into being on the short end of clever response. I also thought about Placido Polanco, but he was way after Whitey.
I’ll bet Rat’s AKC registration papers shows the official name for his beloved 4-legged companion to be Dorrel Norman Elvert Herdog.
March 1, 2023 at 10:31 pm #213400Thanks, Jnevel.
March 1, 2023 at 11:04 pm #213401Haha…Yeah, Euro, when I saw the name of that guy, for whatever reason I instantly thought of Oquendo. Then, after seeing BW’s comment concerning all 9 positions I couldn’t remember whether or not Oquendo had DH’ed in the ’87 WS which would have given him 10 positions and would have possibly been a good trivia question, so out of curiousity I looked it up and the answer is no…At any rate, it’s plain and clear to see that I most definitely have too much free time on my hands…Haha. It’s nice to be retired, but maybe it’s time I start seeking a little part time employment to keep me out of trouble…Nah!
March 2, 2023 at 5:15 am #213403Have the world tournament guys left camp yet?
I guess their return depends upon how far the team they are on advances. Lets hope for no injuries.
March 2, 2023 at 6:48 am #213405The ones playing in Asia have left. As noted back a page or two, today is Wainwright’s last start before he leaves.

cardsfan64ParticipantBrian, when does the minor league camp get started? I remember last year a list of minor league players invited to camp was published, but haven’t seen anything this year. Too early?
March 2, 2023 at 8:22 am #213412Monday. I don’t have the player list yet.
Coincidentally, I posted a new article about Minor League Camp within the last 10 minutes. I am in camp starting today and will have regular reports for members when there is news to share. If you haven’t joined, it would be a good time!
This coming weekend, #stlcards STEP Camp concludes, but it will flow into the full minors spring training camp as minor leaguers continue to join the big league club daily. We have the details, whether you are going in person or following from afar. ($) https://t.co/AfVCL8x4nt pic.twitter.com/QjQidjTsZG

March 2, 2023 at 9:47 am #213415Maybe Waino will have more MPH today.. Is Woody following again..?
March 2, 2023 at 12:49 pm #213418He ain’t looking good today. Abreu’s home run looked like it landed on the second floor patio of the Marlins’ complex.
Yes, Woodford is pitching the fourth.
P.S. In fairness, Donovan made an error at third and Yepez apparently lost a ball in the sun in left. So it hasn’t been a crisp game in the early going. Yet all three Astros runs are earned.
José Abreu hammered a home run off Adam Wainwright with an estimated exit velo of 112.1 MPH… That's four balls hit off Wainwright with EVs over 104 MPH today.
He ends the third with three runs, five hits, two K's and no walks, and that will likely end his day. #STLCards

cardsfan64ParticipantHicks seems to be allowing a bunch of hits in ST, and his control has been suspect. Hope he pulls it together in the next few weeks!
March 2, 2023 at 2:33 pm #213422Is this early- or late-season form for Adam? Let’s hope Father Time is simply showing us his sense of humor by just messin’ with Adam for now instead of getting all serious about it.
March 2, 2023 at 3:14 pm #213423I only have the box score and this thread to go on, but it seems like Woody’s outing was the best of the lot. Good to see him getting some swing and miss.
We saw Adam have an extended period of ineffectiveness at the end of last season. We have to discount the implausible mechanics explanation, since that couldn’t have been invisible to the professionals. So we have no idea what was responsible or the likelihood it would persist until now. Hopefully just shaking off the rust. I leave it to him to know if cutting out for a while might affect his readiness for opening day.
I see that Contreras is batting .000 so far.
March 2, 2023 at 3:23 pm #213424Father time is always serious and has no sense of humor. No question he’s lousy company…Haha!
March 2, 2023 at 3:35 pm #213426As much as I disliked the Contreras signing he should be fine. Waino I am not so sure.
March 2, 2023 at 3:48 pm #213427I’ve always seen these practice games in the sense that I pay little attention to what the veterans do and place the focus on the performance of the upstarts. For most of them it’s as near as to a Big League debut as they’ve experienced, so they’re undoubtedly amped up every time they step into the box or take to the field. The veterans are probably experiencing something similar to the feeling of an old soldier performing another close order drill.
