Only a blind person would not see Molinas defense is declining especially on blocking low pitches and his arm cant make up for big jumps runners get like he used to.Father time waits for nobody .Molina included. He was always slow but now he is a guy running in molasses.Yeah he knocks in some runs ( he better considering MM persists in batting him 5th when he should be 7th.As much as i apprecciate what Molina has done his Diva attitude and sloppy defense have soured me on him and his dumb contract.I see more trouble between MM and Diva Molina in the future.

I am hoping Molina and Matheny can work out a agreeable plan for resting Molina and giving Kelly playing time.If Molina is truly a team guy then he should understand why and when he needs rest and Kelly needs some playing time.

Cards overpaid and overlong with Molina.Defense is declining especially blocking low pitches and his throwing runners out is declining also (Its not all his fault he gets stolen on more often if the pitchers cant hold runners close but his arm cant cover for that anymore).A big issue i have with Yadier Molina is him dictating his playing time instead of listening t his manager who knows about catching. All older athletes are generally the last ones to realize that they aint what they used to be.IMHO a Molina playing 110-120 games at a higher level ( getting regular days off and rest) is better for the team than a tired slower less agile Molina trying to play 140 plus game.Cards have a rising potential star in Carson Kelly and with some more experience he should only get better.

If Alvarez amounts to anything more than a backup INF with decent glove AND Nicasio fails in the last few weeks AND doesn’t sign with the Cards when he becomes a FA then it might prove to be adumb trade.

Alvarez won’t be missed.Cards have others coming up to be middle INF prospects.Nicasio can help get to the playoffs THIS YEAR.Alvarez couldn’t. Cards have better prospects who will need 40 man roster protection so losing Alvarez is acceptable IMHO

Why Valera? Is he filling a position of need? Is he long term option or just rewarding a good trooper? I would rather see O’Neill or Wisdom get a shot just for the experience.Mayers could be dropped from the 40 man roster and the Cards could offer him a Spring invite to show his stuff again.

Some more thoughts on trade targets
1.Ryan McMahon Colorado Rockies-blocked by Arenaudo.Has time at 1B-2B-3B.bats LH .A top 10 prospect for Rockies but they also have another 3B top 30 prospect coming up their system.

    2.Nick Castellanos RH bat 25 years old.25 HRs 80 RBI .252 BA 129 K 37 BB >306 OBP .455 SLG controllable under contract next 3 years i think.
    3. Colin Moran 3B Astros.LH bat turns 25 October.Rookie blocked by Brugmann.rehabbing from fouling ball off cheekbone.

Just some possible 3B bats for consideration.Castellanos could be a power bat but he does K a lot.
Moran and McMahon could be younger versions of Matt Carpenter.
JAGER- I had Ryon Healy on my list also for consideration.

Wisdom will probably go elsewhere as a minor league FA.Philadelphia always could use some help.Somebody will give him a Spring training invite and I think he could be a decent reserve/spot starter for some team.

Compete failure to even get the ball out of the infield.Lousy hitting by Yadier and Piscotty.I bet that Bader was told to run on contact and make the Giants make the play.

Rats did you decide that the Cards are only a couple of players away from being a real contender before or after Barnaby Jones?Expecting better results with the basically the same roster is nonsense.Too much inconsistent pitching and hitting and poor defense added together with lousy base running and poor fundamentals does not a contender make. Most here realize that there will be some roster turnover this off season and not the mass reconstruction several have wished for. This team has to solidify the rotation and fix the bullpen plus get some big offense from somewhere.Expecting Just a couple of additions to fix the problems is risky business and setting up for another crappy season hoping for comebacks, from all the guys who had poor seasons and hoping anyone who played well in 2017 can repeat in 2018.Too much wishful thinking.

Gyorko faded badly after the All-star break and has not been nowhere as good the 2nd half.Sluggish bat has been evident. That’s way IMHO Gyorko would be more effective getting 400 ABs instead of dragging butt most of this half of the season.

I understand your reasoning and you make good sense with your picks. I would drop Valera because you have Diaz and Garcia and Mejia as infield reserves.Mayer’s is a easy drop and I would think really hard about Wainwright to 60-DL and tell him to rehab and try and come back strong next Spring. Why not Knizer from AA instead of Lino or Rosario?Still would like to see Montgomery get a shot to see if he can help.I would like to see O’Neill up after AAA playoffs.Patrick Wisdom deserves a chance also but I think he will be treated like Mike Calise was.Never got a shot because Whitey liked his rabbits.

Since the Cards need a upgrade which position needs upgrading the most and what are the options?
3B-Gyorko has done okay although he has shown he is better filling a utility role IMHO.So that leaves FeeeAgency and the options are slim after Mike Moustakas and Todd Frazier.Moustakas having a big power year and Frazier is hitting for power and decent OBP but low average. The other option is 1B and Hosmer is top choice but KC probably will keep him at almost any cost. After Hosmer the options are Duda and Logan Morrison and Make Reynolds and Yonder Alonso.I question how much of a real upgrade any would be over Carpenter.
My choice would be signing Jay Bruce and go hard after Moustakas also.If Moustakas go elsewhere or stays in KC then Todd Frazier would be next option.Trading OF surplus to upgrade bullpen could be a option.Bruce or Frazier would offer 25-30 Home run power.I like JD Martinez also but his defense is well below average. That is my two cents worth.Bruce would offer a LH power bat which the Cards lack.Of course if I had my way Fowler would be traded along with Piscotty and Pham.A Outfield with Grichuk and Jay Sierra and Bader/Mags Sierra and O’Neill would be okay.

Since it’s Flaherty instead of Gant(already on 40 man roster) that makes me think it is as close to throwing in the towel as you can get without saying so.By bringing up Flaherty is so unlike Mo and FO
    .Certainly a surprise.

Still think getting Stanton is a pipe dream. No way in hell the Cards take on that much salary.I think Lynn gets more money than Cards want to pay.I think Cards go young with the rotation next season.
    CMartinez
    Wacha
    Wainwright
    Flaherty
    Weaver
    Hudson
    Gomber
    Gallen
    Arturo Reyes
    Matt Pearce

All should get Spring training chances .

Fowler ? I can hope he is next.Followed by Carpenter.

I am leaning towards free agency.Jay Bruce OF or Todd Frazier 3B/1B would be my choices.Cards would have to deal a OF or two to make room for Bruce who is 31 and would offed a LH bat with power and okay defense in RF.If Todd Frazier was signed you would have a RH bat with power who has a good OBP for that particular crowd. He might be a little cheaper because he is having a bit of a down year. He is 32 so maybe a 3 year deal.Going free agent route only cost money and the OF surplus can be used in trades to get bullpen help.I would love to see Moustakas 3B in StLouis but I think he will get more money than Cards will pay.Gyorko can be utility guy or be used in trade to upgrade bullpen if Frazier is signed. If Cards really wanted to they could sign both Bruce and Frazier.Lynn and Duke and Oh are coming off payroll and making some smart trades can cut some underachieving players and money from the roster.I would even consider trading Carpenter and Pham and Diaz and Gyorko if gettong younger cheaper players in return.Carpenter would be a fine addition to a team that needs a good OBP guy with some pop.Carp would be a good DH in the AL.He would look good in Yankee pinstripes or BoSox with both their funky RF and gaps in alleys.Gyorko would fit most anywhere as a utility guy with some power and a reasonable salary and is still young.Grichuk has power potential that should be interesting to a team lacking power and Pham has had a good season and someone might feel he can be a possible 2 season starter who is cheap. As others have said this team doesn’t have a bunch of untouchables.
    Carlos Martinez
    Luke Weaver
    Paul DeJong
    Alex Reyes
    Carson Kelly
    Kolten Wong
    Jack Flaherty
    Magnus Sierra
    Harrison Bader
    Austin Bomber
    Dakota Hudson
    Sandy Alcantara
    Tyler O’Neill

I would keep these guys as a foundation for the future.I think there are other guys to keep but just a step below top guys
    Michael Wacha
    Matt Bowman
    Tyler Lyons
    Brett Cecil

    Guys team is stuck with
    Yadier Molina
    Derek Fowler

I think that none of the OFs are valuable enough by them self to being big returns back in trade.I think it will have to be a package type deal.I really hope Cards can keep most of their young pitching prospects because of the question marks concerning Wainwright and Wacha.Weavdr and Flaherty andHudson all need to be kept along with Bomber abd Fallen and Helsey.

Nice post Eurowolf.I think Yadi’s stats are somewhat misleading. He might not strikeout much or Walk much but batting 5th it seems he has killed many more rallies than he has started.Didn’t DeJong only walk 1 time in his first 100 Abs?His walk rate has improved since then but he still could improve his selectivity at the plate.

The fact that the Cards have a surplus of OF’s.Piscotty has a long term contract and i think he gets 1 more year to rebound.Fowler has a NTC.Sierra is a top 30 Cards prospect and is very young so I think he stays.Bader and O’Neill are young and close to being ready. Plus Cards have Martini who is hitting .300 at Memphis and he is a lefty bat.
So using that logic makes me think that these guys could be the guys who are traded.
1.Tommy Pham- he is having a good season but he is also going to be 30_
Before next season and does have his vision issues.
2.Grichuk-his power potential will make somebody take a chance with him since he is still cheap, good defense and only 26.
3.Jose Martinez.might be a great fit for a AL team as a DH.A role that fits him perfectly.
Do I think the FO will be proactive enough to be really aggressive to make big things happen this off season.I really hope to see big progress and not just “We really tried” but nobody wanted to deal.
