I think control-ability will be a recurring theme the rest of the year like with the Sam Tui trade.

I will be at the game tomorrow, first one this season. Got some seats close in so maybe see Hudson close up.

It should also be remembered that when MM was hired it was generally accepted that he was seen by the front office as the ultimate company man who would toe the company line. Obviously, any insubordination over Mabry or anything else would mean there would have to be some other reason for him to remain the manager.

I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if Mo is largely responsible for cultivating the under performing offense angle and channeling the blame toward Mabry. It must be appreciated that he would not want the roster to be the focus of attention.

I remember when Bernie bashing was hip. Anyway, two things keep getting harder to harrumph. First is that Mike had inertia behind him to start and its bled off so he’s under his own steam now. Second, admittedly trailing behind the first but headed in the same direction, is that Mo had inertia behind him when the smart people left for Houston. That’s bled off too.

Has anyone heard anything about how Chris Duncan is doing? Last I heard was when he took medical leave a couple months ago.

I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if Mo thinks he can get something for Kelly.

Earlier I had asked what happens if Kelly and Knizner are both healthy and at Memphis at the same time. I guess we found out it is the artificially holding Knizner back thing mentioned by Brian. With Baron now at Memphis, it would make more sense to have Knizner there where playing at AAA level would push his game forward. What harm would come from putting Kelly at Springfield since at this point he is not going to gain anything from being at Memphis.

Although there is virtually nothing left of the original, the ballpark there in Clinton is one of the dwindling number of WPA ballpark sites still in use by an affiliated team. I have been there many times and can attest there have never been any rafters in left field. 🙂

What if Kelly and Knizner are both in Memphis and healthy at the same time, who plays and who sits? Obviously, the send Kelly to Memphis so he can play thing is getting awkward.

And for what it is worth, Rick Hummel now says he thinks Kelly won’t hit enough and Knizner is the heir apparent.

That reminds me, I still have the link to the TCNB Musial #19 project but when I click on it the article or thread, or whatever it was, it appears for a moment and then flips to this site. I have also tried the link at the bottom of your SABR article from a few years ago but same result. It was truly epic, how can I access it?

This is the year. Grounds out 9-3. What do you say? Giving you a chance to cancel out the pizza and beer you still owe me from a few years ago.

Best wishes to Chris Duncan and family. He took medical leave from his radio job. Said he had to fight the cancer again.

Speaking of McEwing, who remembers the Little Mac Land signs in the left field bleachers?

My strategy will be the same next year as it was this year. Go to Memphis in June and see the team play for cheap before they all get to St. Louis.

Good point about Fowler. He may be the most concerning disappointment because of the remaining contract. The Cardinals don’t like to eat big bucks. Clearly, we are not stronger up the middle defensively this year like was advertised. Along the lines of value, Waino is one of the biggest negatives as far as value of WAR vs salary. He may be coming on, though, but unless he can go 9 every time it may not matter.

We might want to include ourselves in the disappointing category to the extent we convinced ourselves various guys were something they are not. Diaz is the case in point. Remember that there was not a big glut of teams slobbering over him when he first signed, and then not that long ago anybody could have claimed him for a bag of balls and nobody did. Maybe we saw what we wanted rather than than what was plain enough to everybody else. We also seem to convince ourselves that complementary piece type guys like Piscotty and Grich are guys an offense can be built around. The front office seems to make the same mistake.

I have noticed that the Cards have only 4 “qualifiers” as far as batting stats goes. That is abnormally low. Most teams, including all the better teams, have 5 or 6. Among the 4 qualifiers, Carpenter and Gyorko are putting up good numbers. Fowler and Molina, not so much. My take is that we have 2 of the 8 hitter slots producing day in and day out. That is not going to get us anywhere. I would classify all the position players but Carp and Jed disappointing.

All starters are “qualifiers”. That is stability if nothing else. No real disappointments there.

As to the pen, there is no pen. Not sure how much of that is front office and how much is Mad Mike. I count both as disappointing.

No fair Brian. Wifi at the Peabody stinks and I only had a tablet that also stinks. And no, I don’t use an Iphone because it took over my life. But good job being on top of it, as always.
