Nolan Gorman does look like a gamer. Sort of has that sweet swing thing going for him.
Having said that, however, the jury is still out. We shall see.

March 18, 2021 at 8:33 pm #155926I am waiting to see how Gorman does above A ball. He is young so he could spend a couple years there if need be.
March 18, 2021 at 8:33 pm #155927Ah ah ah, Rat! Din-Din revelations do not commence until opening day. Though I do want to try your Amish restaurant pies one day. I plan on taking some sort of trek thru “Hoosiers” Hickory territory in Indiana one day relatively soon. If that’s close to your area, my treat for Din-Din at your Amish restaurant, Rat. We’ll have all the pretty waitresses wanting to hang out at our table.
And speaking of “Indiana”, yes ZT ( that’s “Zachary David Thompson” to the layman ) from Selma, is the real deal.

stlcard25ParticipantIt’s very unlikely that Gorman spends a couple more years in the minors at this point. If he does, that bodes poorly for his future as an impact big leaguer.

jj-cf-stlParticipantI agree w/Mr. DeWitt, that Gorman needs to run the upper minors gauntlet. How long that takes is about Gormans progress.

ParticipantGorman has been working out some at 2B. I wonder if they’ve thought about giving him some some in left field, with O’Neill sliding over to centerfield. That might work nicely if Edman is firmly implanted at second base.
March 18, 2021 at 9:42 pm #155931Yeah, as of now Gorman has a couple dozen PAs vs pitching above Florida State League and those are vs spring training pitching. We don’t want to get carried away. I very much doubt he will be added to the 40 man any time this season. If this year in higher level MiLB he improves on his .256 BA and K rate from A+ ball, then maybe some time next year. I really don’t think they will want to add him to the 40 man until he is ready for every day play at whatever position it is going to be.

stlcard25ParticipantThe Cardinals don’t artificially keep players in the minors like other organizations do, so if he plays well at Springfield this year, he will likely be at Memphis by year’s end. Perhaps they’ll find reason to keep him in Memphis the whole year next year but again, if it’s due to him plateauing as a player he will not be anywhere near as exciting as a 23 year old in 2023 as he is at 21 and knocking on the door later this year.
March 19, 2021 at 6:14 am #155935Gorman’s bat will carry him to the majors. The fewer new positions he has to learn, the better. At this point, the team has said he will focus on 2B and 3B. As jj noted, he will move as fast as he shows he is ready. No one knows if his debut will be in 2021 or 2022.
March 19, 2021 at 7:11 am #155937
stlcard25ParticipantOf course no one knows when he may debut. That said, why not have a database instead of a forum if we’re not here to discuss opinions? Lol
My prediction is that Gorman mashes at Springfield for half a year and then moves up to Memphis. People who cite the fact that he hasn’t played above A ball and then cite his low batting average and K rates are ignorant of at least two facts, IMO: 1) he faced far better pitching in the last year than he would have faced in Springfield anyway. Two spring training camps (or what they got in last year) plus the Alternate site all gave him a good, every day view of pitching that outstrips AA quality. 2) the A ball hitting environments the Cards play in are awful. If you’ve been watching spring training games, it’s apparent that Roger Dean is a killer of power in particular. Those low batting averages mean *something*…just not as much as the old school stats crowd would have you believe. He was still a solidly above average hitter at a very young age for both leagues.
There’s a lot to be excited about for Mr Gorman. Hopefully we get to see it come together this year close to the majors and have him in St Louis before the end of 2022.

ParticipantMemphis is perfect destination for Gorman. He could alternate between second and third with the presence of the versatile Evan Mendoza who can play any of the 4 infield positions. Schildt described him as a “Swiss army knife”.
March 19, 2021 at 8:23 am #155943bccran
Participant25 makes a lot of sense. Gorman’s seen a lot better pitching than he would have otherwise because of Springfield. The Cardinals are going to want to get his bat into the lineup sooner than later. Probably by early 2022. Right now, Edman is making a strong showing to be the solid second baseman and leadoff man for years into the future. That sets the infield.
So the natural move is for Gorman to learn left field and O’Neill slide over to center. Many have been asking for a left handed hitting power bat for the OF (Pederson type). In Gorman you have him.March 19, 2021 at 8:46 am #155944
stlcard25ParticipantBc, don’t forget that the DH is nearly a certainty for 2022. Gorman could play a little 2B (say 2x per week), a little 3B (1x per week) and DH (2-3x per week) and get plenty of at bats, if his play supports it. Also, while we don’t think Arenado will opt out after this year or next, it is within the realm of possibility so I doubt they would move Gorman to the OF permanently until they knew for sure that Arenado was sticking around.

jj-cf-stlParticipantI’m less “excited” over a 21 yr old debut, whose final club control year is age 27 (Carlson, age 22-27). The age 28 yr old full season is more valuable to me than the age 22 full season, in general.
The 28 yr old FA-to-be spends more developmental time in the minors and it’s arguably thought of as the single most prime year of his career. There will be outliers, but age 22 and 23 are rarely viewed as prime years.
It’s probably an oversimplification by me, but I like the age 23-28 block of club control, which allows for a partial season debut at age 22.
2020’s lack of a minors season probably affected Carlsons debut. His callup was a way to get him playing time and work on his development in games. Gorman has the benefit of an expected 2021 minors season, no need to rush him.
March 19, 2021 at 9:23 am #155946bccran
ParticipantIf Gorman and Carlson play up to their ceilings, the Cards will extend them before or during their arbitration years to capture their peak years. Dissimilar to Flaherty.
March 19, 2021 at 9:26 am #155947bccran
ParticipantAnd 25, Gorman has a pretty good glove to go along with his bat. I don’t think he’s a candidate for DH and/or bouncing back and forth between infield positions. Just a darned good corner outfielder. Paired with Carlson.
March 19, 2021 at 11:52 am #155954Friday lineup:
Carpenter 4
Carlson 9
Arenado 5
O’Neill 7
Knizner 2
Bader 8
Sosa 6
Nogowski 3
Martínez 1March 19, 2021 at 12:06 pm #155955
jj-cf-stlParticipantCarlos Martinez facing the NYM
Nimmo 8
Lindor 6
Conforto 9
Alonso 3
McNeill 4
JD Davis DH
Pillar 7
Nido 2
Drury 5Taijuan Walker starting for NYM
March 19, 2021 at 1:26 pm #155957Nido homered for the Mets. 1-0 New York.
And it seems to me that logic dictates Gorman learn the outfield. Probably LF. O’Neill has the speed and a gold glove on his resume’ so perhaps he could slide over to CF. And Bader becomes the 4th outfielder, late inning defensive replacement. All of this, most likely, no earlier than 2022.

March 19, 2021 at 3:44 pm #155961We really stunk it up today. Besides a couple guys we won’t see on opening day.
March 19, 2021 at 4:32 pm #155962Carlos Martinez wasnt very good again today. My gut feeling is that this is his final year with St. Louis.

stlcard25ParticipantWhen you face the same team three times in a row, there is bound to be some trouble. Hopefully Carlos can avoid pitching against the Mets if we play them early this year.

ParticipantGotta get a rhythm going, willie. No minor league pitchers once the season starts.
