I’ve been laying out the stats for Cardinal draftees for 25 years, and have never seen a draft quite like this one.

For example, D.J. Carpenter from Oregon State had an ERA of
7.77. In 24.1 innings he gave up 33 hits and opponents batted .314 against him. Joseph King, the kid out of Cal? he gave up 80 hits in 72.2 innings, only struck out 60, and had a .285 BAA. Not exactly stellar stats for a 9th round pick. Matt Hickey from the baseball factory Tarleton had an ERA of 6.75 and gave up 37 hits in 32 innings. Opponents batted .294 against him. But the best head scratching example is Hunter Hayes from U. of the Pacific. In 64.2 innings, he gave up 106 hits and walked 25. BBA was
    .361. Wow.

On the position player side, I always look for either a high BA and high OBP and/or power and speed. I actually like Victor Scott’s speed (38 stolen bases), but a college hitter with a BA of .278 isn’t very impressive. Alex
ladisernia? Hit .276 with only 6 home runs for little Elon University. Not exactly SEC competition. And over the years I haven’t seen many 5′ 10″ drafted outfielders who haven’t exhibited much power or speed go very far.

Again, to me (at least) this is an unusual draft. I respect the scouts and think they do a fine job, but maybe the field after the first few rounds just wasn’t very fertile this year.

I do like Hjerpe, Mautz, Hanson, Rajcic, and Crooks though.

Some of these draft picks should be sent to Springfield right away to fit in.

Cade Winquest at Texas Arlington – 5.40 ERA
Chandler Arnold at Dallas Baptist – 5.29 ERA
    D. J. Carpenter at Oregon State – 7.77 ERA
Matt Hickey at Tarleton – 6.75 ERA
Hunter Hayes at U. of Pacific – 6.82 ERA

    What’s Flores thinking?

One of the surprising things is that he’s doing this with Albert on the team, and with Waino looking for his catcher.
    Legacy battery.

No way Soto becomes a Cardinal IMHO. It’s not the way they do business. Pitching help prior to the deadline is a different story, though.

Maybe expectations have something to do with it. If your arm or shoulder was a little tired or a little sore in the past, you’d put some analgesic balm on it and press on. You were expecting to pitch and you did. Many times the arm recovered on it’s own over a short period of time. Now, all sorts of red flags go up. I pitched all the way through high school, college, and semi-pro ball. Sure my arm ached at times, but it always came back to normal. Never missed a start.

Stats don’t show everything that’s going on with a player, jj. There can be other factors at play. The manager needs to be on top of those factors daily with each player.

Also, stats (analytics and metrics) don’t take into consideration fan enjoyment. What creates an enjoyable product and an enjoyable game in the MLB recreation industry? That’s also what needs to be taken into account.

Good for him. Wish him well. He was a disaster in 2019, 2020, and 2021 with the Cardinals.

Arenado is a great player and good teammate both on and off the field.
We’re very fortunate to have this very probable future Hall of Famer.

Sometimes it’s over use of stats, jj. The players aren’t robots. Stats don’t take into account fatigue, injuries, family issues affecting performance, etc. That’s why the manager needs some latitude. Maybe that’s part of Rat’s point.

I’m sure he’s already kicking himself, Rats. He’s super competitive,
and probably his own worst critic.

Rats – He’s clearly one of the best all around third basemen in the game. Maybe all time.

It would really be interesting if Arenado could be specific on what he thinks the Cards needs are. And then to see what MO’s verbal response would be.

Rats – some of the best players in the history of MLB have struggled for awhile after being promoted to the major leagues. Yepez has only been in 62 major league games.

That Yepez/Burleson combo in the future is hard to beat.

Gorman? He’s a young kid who’s adjusting to the major leagues and is a star in the making. No way they trade him.

They simply can’t continue to go with VerHagen in that role.

Why trade a reasonably good pitcher when you’re lacking for good pitching? Especially a pitcher who fits into your need for a long man out of the pen?

Seems like there might be less drunken or druggie crazies on the downtown streets on Saturday afternoon than late Saturday evening, as fans walk to their cars. I’m all for day games during the weekend.

The Cards rank 8th in MLB in runs scored, and are only 10 runs away from ranking 4th. Even with TO, HB, and YM out. Doesn’t seem like it with all the shutouts. The problem is inconsistency. You get that with youth like Donovan, Gorman, Carlson, Yepez, etc. The key is to get Yadi back in there hitting .250 or so, for TO to return to 2021 form and give protection to Arenado, and for Edman to get out of his slump.

On the pitching side, the staff ranks 10th overall in ERA and 18th in WHIP. With Flaherty and Matz out, with miserable performances from VerHagen, Wittgren, and McFarland, and with the shunning of Woodford.
At the deadline, they need to pick up both a serviceable starter and a serviceable reliever.

They have other guys they could trade – O’Neill, Bader, Dickerson, Yepez, Gomez, Sosa, Knizner or Herrera, etc.

Hanging in there. Hitting .338 with 16 home runs and 64 RBI in 76 games. Still only striking out 15% of the time. Maybe he could hit protectively behind Arenado.

Woodford started for Memphis tonight. 5 shutout innings, giving up only 3 hits. Struck out 5 and walked none.
When will they learn? Oh, that’s right, they’re paying VerHagen $2.5 million this year and $3.0 million next year. Gotta play him.

By the way, Memphis scored 19 runs tonight on 23 hits. Could have used some of that at Busch.

Question. What Cardinal minor league pitcher has 48 strikeouts in 27 1/3 innings?
