“I never focus on numbers. My job is to help this ballclub to win a championship.” Thanks, Mang!

I do not recall a 42 year old having this much impact on a club either. Maybe it has happened somewhere along the long history of the big leagues.
At age 42, Nolan Ryan led MLB with 301 Ks (in 239 IP) and fewest hits per nine innings (6.1). He won 16 games and posted a 3.20 ERA – for a 4th place team that was only four games over .500. He played four more seasons after that, winning another 35 games before retiring.
September 11, 2022 at 8:59 pm #200215BW…Yeah, I thought of Ryan, R. Johnson, Niekro and a few others who were in or near their 40’s. Mostly all pitchers and I coudn’t really think of any that were playing for a team that was competitive for the post-season or a WS except for Clemens. Plus, I really couldn’t think of any position players. At any rate Brian, I’m sure you’ll agree that the great slugger is providing quite a show for not only Redbird fans, but all fans of baseball. He’s something else. Glad he’s once again doing it in a Cardinal uniform!
September 11, 2022 at 9:52 pm #200217What 1td!? Ha, no love for Jamie Moyer or Hoyt Wilhelm? Those guys pitched until the years they turned 50, lol. Those are some genuine old farts.
Speaking of Wilhelm, he was quite an interesting guy. Did not play in MLB until he was 29 due to service in WWII. Pitched his whole career with shrapnel in his back and earned a Purple Heart in the Battle of the Bulge. Pitched a no-hitter, but spent most of his career as a reliever. Was one of the first used as a weapon to close out a game rather than merely taking over for a struggling starter. Was an all star at 48 y/o. Hall of Famer to boot.
Oh, and before I forget, glad to see Pujols kicking butt down the stretch.

ParticipantNolan Ryan is the only one I can think far as in my lifetime of watching. There were some other pitchers but they were junk pitchers. Ryan wasn’t a guy who changed his pitching style as he got older. Learn to pitch smarter as they say cause you lose a little on the fastball. No he threw fastballs the majority of the time and was still very effective when he retired. Heck he could probably go out and strike out the side today

The heroics of Pujols and O’Neill carried the day. Edman 2 for 4 and Noot reached base 3 times with game saving D in RF.
Arenado and Goldy get two days rest. Nice job Oli.

ParticipantDo you mean 44 year old, Brian?

stlcard25ParticipantMatt and Samantha Brown caught Pujols’s 697th homer. Samantha’s
father passed away one year ago today. They met with Albert to give him the ball back — he told them to keep it and signed two more for them. Said it would mean more to her than to him. pic.twitter.com/FuXXFiYCIa— Jeff Jones (@jmjones) September 11, 2022

Yes!

No.
September 12, 2022 at 9:40 am #200235stlcard25…That’s awesome and also illustrates that Albert’s primary interests are in the area of winning as opposed to personal numbers and achievments.
September 12, 2022 at 9:56 am #200236bccran
Participant44 – yes. Two years older, as attested by a high level executive friend of mine with the Cardinals when AP was a young player here.
September 12, 2022 at 10:16 am #200240OK, good to know. Let’s file that with the other unproven allegations. Last week, it was steroids that only work against LHP.
Why can’t folks just enjoy the ride?
September 12, 2022 at 11:28 am #200246bccran
ParticipantIt’s not a rumor, Brian, it’s a fact.
I’m enjoying the ride immensely with Albert. It’s a unique opportunity to watch him set all these records in a Carinal uniform. And the fact is that he never, ever has been accused officially by any credible source of taking anything illegal to enhance his performance. The warmth between he and Yadi on this 2022 journey is something that I’ve never seen before between teammates. It’s really special.
September 12, 2022 at 12:53 pm #200250Hearsay is not fact. Fact can be proven.
September 12, 2022 at 2:42 pm #200255bccran
ParticipantNot when you hear it from the horse’s mouth, and he’s one of the owners of the Cardinals.
September 12, 2022 at 3:16 pm #200259If he knows that for a fact than the Cards are probably guilty of fraud.
September 12, 2022 at 3:28 pm #200263Right. If I wrote about that with no more “proof” than someone in the know told me, I would be rightfully crucified for slander.
September 12, 2022 at 3:43 pm #200265BW…Haha! Who cares how old he is? Not me! It’s not like I’m gonna’ ask him out on a date… I just like to see him rip taters!
September 12, 2022 at 8:22 pm #200292Cranny,
You deliberately posted your 44-year-old comments to start an argument.Stop.
While I rarely post, I actually read nearly everything, just in case, ’cause that’s what Moderators do.
Just stop.
BTW, the “horse’s mouth”, i.e. primary source, would be Pujols. Not an owner.
September 12, 2022 at 8:39 pm #200293bccran
ParticipantOh my gosh. I’m so sorry I passed that along, Brian. Thanks so much for the chastisement. I’ll think twice next time.
My double bad.September 12, 2022 at 8:42 pm #200294bccran
ParticipantYou’re absolutely wrong, UConn. I passed it on to be informational and how wonderfully he’s playing when his age is even older. Please don’t assume another person’s intent. Thank you very much. Have a great evening, sir.
September 12, 2022 at 8:52 pm #200295That would be ma’am!!
I don’t assume intent. I look at a poster’s posting history and the results of the current post. I then decide whether to act or not and, if so, how to proceed.
You know perfectly well Pujols’ given age is 42. NO ONE has submitted substantive evidence to the contrary. No one.
To bring it up now brings nothing but arguments.
Stop.
End of discussion on my part.
September 12, 2022 at 9:57 pm #200303bccran
ParticipantI’ve known you and respected for a long time, UConn. Be nice. It fits who you are better.
September 12, 2022 at 11:22 pm #200306Calling our dear UCONN “sir” will get a terse respond back not 99% of the time, but understandably 100% of the time, Cranny. Saying that is not like you…… I’m sure it was a mistake.
At this stage of his career, who really cares what Albert’s age is? If he was 44 vs 42(and no verifiable evidence has yet to be presented), then in my mind, what he’s doing here this season is even more impressive. To put this issue to bed, I’d be willing to split the difference and just say that Albert is age 43 and then get on with his magical final ML season.
September 13, 2022 at 7:35 am #200316bccran
ParticipantPugs – after serving time in the military, I’ve always felt that the word “sir” is used as an address of respect. That’s the way I used it.
Ma’am also applies. -
