ParticipantAre we looking at Edman as an outfielder?
September 13, 2022 at 12:20 pm #200344My bad too on Edman.
September 13, 2022 at 1:12 pm #200346bccran
ParticipantJust wondered if Edman is being looked at as a potential outfielder, with Winn coming on so strong.
September 13, 2022 at 1:18 pm #200347PadsFS
ParticipantI mentioned in the FA thread, I liked Brandon Nimmo and also Joc Pederson is a possibility.

stlcard25ParticipantEdman has such versatility that anything should be on the table. I do think he’s so good defensively on the infield that it would have to be a really advantageous situation to move him to CF. That’s not to say that it’s impossible if the Cards think they can roll with Winn, Gorman and Donovan in the middle infield.

ParticipantWith his speed, Edman might have some great range in CF. Will need that kind of speed if we have some slower power guys at the corners.
September 13, 2022 at 3:37 pm #200356Walker is pretty fast. It’s just a matter of whether or not he takes good routes and gets good jumps. Some of the others are a little slower.
September 13, 2022 at 3:52 pm #200359Losing Puhols and with Donovan, Gorman, Yepez, Nootbar and Burlson all hitting better against RH pitching Mo needs tô find a RH hitting version of Dickerson who can also play some OF. Dickerson hás been good but not sure he is what we need going in tô 2023.
Those guys are all young and lacking a track record. My point was that I could see Mo wanting to have an experience MLB hitter with a track record to backstop a parade of noobs. We saw last year and again this year that it doesn’t matter if you have a lot of them, they can all stumble. With Goldy and NA being proven right handed bats, any need from that side is not as stark, but a RH bench bat with a track record might be possibility.
September 13, 2022 at 4:09 pm #200362Heck, if you’re going to be a bear, be a grizzly and fit Mike Trout for a Cardinal uniform and place him in CF…If Mozeliak could pull that off, he’d have a statue adorned with a bow tie on Spruce St. next to Musial.
September 13, 2022 at 4:12 pm #200364
stlcard25ParticipantIndeed, only health would be the question mark for the Cards at that point. Mo admitted that if Shelby Miller had been off the board when the Cards picked in 2009, Trout would have been the pick. It’s a shame for Trout that his brilliance has been wasted on such a bad team all these years.
September 13, 2022 at 4:34 pm #200371I think he’s signed up until his late 30’s, but I’d be willing to bet a dollar he wouldn’t mind too much if he were traded to the Cardinals. And you’re right, it is a shame that he hasn’t had much of a chance to feature his talent in the post-season.

stlcard25ParticipantTrout-Goldy-Arenado-Walker as a 2-3-4-5 in the lineup sounds amazing, although a little right hand heavy.
September 13, 2022 at 7:02 pm #200416Blog, minor league splits are also available.
September 13, 2022 at 7:54 pm #200450bccran
ParticipantCrazy fantasy stuff again?
September 14, 2022 at 9:47 am #200492Michael Brantley as an OF LH bat wouldn’t be an awful idea. He could be great in the two hole spot with his OBP and hold down an OF spot until Walker is ready.
Carlson could then be moved for a top of the rotation starter.
September 14, 2022 at 11:12 am #200496Could Trout be had?
Trout + Ohtani is crazy, but Trout feels like something that might work (and we have the position available) given the Goldy and Arenado deals
Back in reality… 😛 Mitch Haniger is my man from FA, not too young, not too old, 3 position capable, all around solid player who won’t demand enormous money or huge years
But if Moz wants to go all in on this Goldy Arenado generation…finding a way to bring Trout to StL and get him the recognition and fans that he deserves would be awesome…and tbh as long as we don’t lose Walker in the deal from the farm…i’m good with just about anyone else being included
September 14, 2022 at 12:26 pm #200499Don’t move Edman to the OF…move Winn.
September 14, 2022 at 1:44 pm #200501The Arozarena deal is looking about as bad as the Ozuna deal. 20/20 obviously, but had we kept our own hitters and pitchers we would be sitting pretty.
Not sure we need to make another deal for an outfielder. What we have looks good for the near future.
September 14, 2022 at 1:47 pm #200503bccran
ParticipantGood thought, GameCard. Winn has the speed and a canon for an arm.
September 14, 2022 at 1:55 pm #200504Trout as a Cardinal is certainly an enticing thought. His one issue is staying on the field. He is a bit injury prone, but man is he good when healthy.
September 14, 2022 at 2:38 pm #200506Mas, what do you think Haniger Will cost as a FA?
September 14, 2022 at 2:57 pm #200508In no way do I think they will or want them to trade for an OF, but signing a Dickerson type to have some veteran stability might be a good idea.
Carlson just hasn’t come around like we had all hoped. TON is nothing compared to what he was last year, which could be lingering injury issues? Noot has definitely looked better in the second half. Walker will need some time in Memphis, etc. If a Brantley type is available, I’m all for it.
I keep forgetting about Yepez, but I think we can all agree he’s better suited for DH duties.
September 14, 2022 at 3:09 pm #200509Winn vs Edman, Winn has the advantage of years of control and cheapness. Edman will start getting expensive the same as guys like Wong and Lynn did and got offed because Mo figured he had replacements in house. That is the pipeline strategy in action.
September 14, 2022 at 4:00 pm #200516Edman over Winn every year. Sign him up long-term now.
September 14, 2022 at 4:43 pm #200521
jj-cf-stlParticipantNo need to sign Edman long term. He still has 3 arb seasons before free agency, just pay the annual arb bill.
At least go annually for two more seasons and then in his FA-to-be season, see if an extension makes sense.
Every time I see these young guys get big money early, I think of PDJ. It’s the org guessing what a player will be 3,4,5 seasons ahead, and really, unless its a club friendly sweetheart deal, the club takes all the risk for very little savings.
Imagine if we’d have signed Flaherty before his arb years, or even Carlson. Why guess at production when you don’t have to?
