Interesting to see Burleson going up against the reigning Cy Young
winner. Still don’t understand why Brian and others felt they wouldn’t make room for him and call him up this season.Because they could have saved a 40 man spot this winter by not. He didn’t have to be added, but the need came to outweigh that luxury.
In regards to catchng with the outside of the glove, some of you may remember Ozzie demonstrating a play in which he would deflect a GB into his thowing hand with his glove for the purpose of eliminating the exchange and thus decreasing the time it took to get the baseball to 1B for the put-out. I’m sure others have used that difficult approach, but it was pretty impressive when Smith put it on display.
Trapping the ball on the back of your glove fingers is common on light or short throws to quicken the transfer on DP’s at 2B.
Time to royally rough up this Burnes fellow. For old times sake, let’s call an inning shall we?

Crew 1jjsfstl…I’d say so. I saw Smith demonstrating it on a program about ST. Can’t remember the name of the program, but he’d been retired for several years and still did it flawlessly time after time. He was pretty good.

That jogged a memory…My G father had a a glove so old it had 5 fingers, stiff and rock hard like yours. We surprised him by “fixing” it by threading shoe laces thru the eyes on the fingertips and slathered brown shoe polish over all.
It was a frightful mess but he wore it every time we went to Forest Park ’till he died.

Good one. The scorer starts sweating, and then for his own well being if the no-no is being pitched by the home team, the scorer suddenly has a higher standard for what he expects from an “average” defender.
I’ve noticed that fans in attendance are not nearly as aggressive for foul balls as they were 20-25 years ago. I wonder what a psychiatrist or phycologist would have to say about that? As recently stated, I’ve been trying to nab a foul ball for decades and have still come up dry. If I did finally get one and some little kid was right next to me wanting me to flip him the ball…..he wouldn’t get it. To make the fans in the area not boo me too loudly, I’d probably give the little rascal a $20 bill……but he wouldn’t get that darn ball no matter what. Heck if the little guy eats right, doesn’t smoke or drink too much or take up hang gliding, he’s probably got another 75 years to catch his own foul ball.
That’s a neat memory Carter- I think we had one like that floating around our family to. Didn’t have any webbing and looked like a giant brown cream puff stuck on your hand. Guess that’s what the old-timey ones were like.
Pugs…Probably because so many game balls are simply tossed to fans by players at inning’s end. They never used to do that. I got plenty of BP balls through the years, but it took me until my mid 30’s to ever get a genuine, hard fought for foul ball during a game. However, on the only one I ever squeezed, I never left my seat…Haha!
Oh my I’ve seen glaciers move faster(stolen from the movie “Invincible”) than Yadi on that grounder.
