The average MLB batting average at the turn of the century was .270. This season so far it’s .242. Of course it needs to be taken with other stats to tell a more complete story, jj. But the decline is startling.

Posters on Cardinal sites who champion analytics (and are great at using analytics for measurement and assessment) are saying that BA is a meaningless stat.

32 year old Aaron Brooks had a 6.18 ERA for Baltimore last season. Why is he on the Memphis roster?

We won’t know how good Carlson will be until he enters into the prime years of his career. And I doubt very seriously that the Cards will trade him. He and Gorman are too important for the future.

The Cardinals offered Pujols a 10 year contract.

O’Neill back in the lineup makes a difference. We don’t need to spend a half billion dollars on an outsider.

Rats – 2/3 of our starting OF has been out. When they were in there we were at close to 10 over .500 at one time early in the season.

You must feel a lot of frustration then, ks. And only happy when the Cards make it to the World Series? Mediocrity? Mediocrity is a team that’s only a .500 team or below.
We’ll just have to agree to disagree. Too many things to like about the Cardinal organization right now. Two of them are at the infield corners. Great trades that were pulled off.

It’s not about you, ks. It’s about a team that is in the top 3 in wins this century. I’m probably at a more senior age than you, and just enjoy watching the Cards every day.
Would winning the WS enhance the enjoyment? Sure, but it doesn’t detract from the enjoyment already felt. And as far as the offense? We’re going through growing pains right now. Edman isn’t going down permanently. He been in a slump. He’ll come back. Gorman and Carlson are probably future All Stars. Walker and Winn are on the way.
Goldy is here for 3 years and NA is here for 6. This is a time to be optimistic.

Business is getting the highest return on investment that you can. Spending a half billion dollars on one player to the detriment of paying fairly for the other 25 players
simply won’t work when you’re looking at the whole. Especially if that person gets hurt. Some of you guys think we can spend like the Yankees and Dodgers. We can’t. Bill didn’t become a billionaire by investing foolishly.

He’s a good offensive player and a weaker defensive player. The problem with a huge contract is that it can handcuff you in the future. I’d rather have a bunch of good all around players than several super stars and and the rest fillers. Just good solid production up and down the lineup. And above average defense. Take a look at the recent Giant teams that were so successful.

Matz should be okay. Flaherty is very questionable.

The Cards rank 7th in runs scored and 17th in runs given up. The need is pretty evident.

Do you really want some kid who turns down $440 million from the organization that nurtured him? Who only has 43 RBI this season through 93 games?

I could see an outfield of Carlson, Walker, and Burleson some day. With Yepez and Gomez as the #4 and #5.

It’s a big step down defensively, though.

KC – Since we already have major bats in Goldy and NA, I’d rather have a balanced outfield of reasonably good hitters and excellent defensive players. Gold Glove types who average .270 -.280 with maybe 20 or so home runs.

Would rather have a healthy and productive O’Neill hitting behind Arenado.

    2021 –

    O’Neill – .286/.352/.560/.912/34 HR/ 15 SB

Soto – .313/.465/.534/.999/29 HR/ 9 SB / higher OBP and OPS because of walks.

    O’Neill far better defensively.

Losing those first few picks in 2017 and the drastically short draft in 2020 have taken their tolls.

For the Cardinals to be at least competent in pitching, several of our high draft picks need to come through. Let’s take a look at the last 6 drafts for pitchers –

2017 – First 5 picks among pitchers – Rivera, Kruczynski,
Seeburger, Summerville, and Patterson. None made it. Walsh was drafted in the 16th round and Whitley in the 27th. Total of 23 pitchers taken in the draft by the Birds.
    None have become Cardinal starters.

2018 – The first 5 pitchers taken were Roberts, Gingery, Gonzalez, Holba, and Justo. Not one of the 19 pitchers have made it. Roberts has been a huge bust. He was taken #43 overall. Gingery had a lot of potential by never recovered from surgery.

2019 – First 5 pitchers taken – Thompson, Locey, Pallante,
Thomas, and Ralston. Better. Thompson was taken overall #14 in the draft. He should be a #1-#3 on the Cardinals right now. He has struggled at times, but they need to give him a shot at the rotation. Pallante is doing well. Thomas is having a decent year at Memphis and Ralston is still in the hunt. He had a decent year at Peoria last season, but has only pitched a dozen innings this season due to injury. None of the other pitchers like Gragg, Lunn, etc. are doing that well.

2020 – A really weird draft during the pandemic. Only 5 rounds, and the Cardinals only selected 3 pitchers –
Hence, Prater, and Bedell. Hence is a gem. Bedell has had injury problems. Prater was drafted in the 3rd round and needs to start coming on.

2021 – First 5 pitchers drafted were McGreevy, Love, Mills, Graceffo, and Ruiz. Graceffo has done great. McGreevy needs to kick it into high gear.

The summary? No matter how well you draft, even if you’re lucky only one or two pitchers are probably going to make it into the major league rotation. And you’d better be right with this first several pitcher picks. It’s really nice to see detailed writeups with the draft, like those that TCN does every year, but realistically most of those guys won’t be guys we can ever root for in St. Louis.

What do I see as the major problem right now? The bad pitchers draft in 2017, the busts with Roberts and injured Gingery, the trading of Locey, and the injury to Bedell.
    Just MHO.

27 – The Cardinals place a big emphasis on ground ball pitching. It can keep the pitch count down, as well as induce double plays in a critical situation. Mikolas has a 2.51 ERA right now, and has only struck out 92 in 120.2 innings.
He’s not thrower, he’s a polished, professional pitcher.

27 – Strikeouts are not a true barometer when the philosophy is pitch to contact with ground balls a priority.

Rats – Take a look at Walker’s age. He just turned 20 in May. He started out this AA season as a 19 year old. That’s rare.

I’ll agree with that, 25, as long as guys like Woodford and Thompson are given a shot at starting.

Maybe it’s best to see what pieces aren’t necessarily important for the future. Looking longer term.

Bader – Free agent after 2023
    O’Neill – Free agent after 2024
Goldy – Free agent after 2024
Edman – Free agent after 2025
DeJong – Free Agent after 2025
Knizner – Free agent after 2025
Carlson – Free agent after 2026
Donovan – Free agent after 2026
Yepez – Free agent after 2026
Arenado – Free agent after 2027

IMHO Goldy, Arenado. Carlson, Edman, Gorman, and Donovan are your core. Add to that Burleson, Walker, and Winn.

Possible tradeable pieces for pitching help? Bader, Sosa, Knizner, Herrera, DeJong, Nootbaar, Capel, Baker, Gomez, Nunez, etc.
