At Wrigley this year Dickerson has a line of 684/684/1.263/1.947.
At Busch his line is 194/223/376/499.
Maybe the Cubs should sign him next year.
I don’t see the Cards signing any major free agents in the off season. Probably some low hanging fruit relievers. Resigning Quintana and extending Montgomery would be priorities to me. When is O’Neill a free agent? After 2024?
You seem to be assuming that Nootbaar is the long-term starter in right. If so, that would be quite surprising coming from one of Lars’ biggest doubters.
Based on what we know now, my assumption at some point next season will be O’Neill-Carlson-Walker across the OF with Nootbaar and perhaps Burleson as reserves.
Nootbaar played 209 games in the minors. His career minor league slash line was .257/.345/.373/.718. Not exactly what you’re looking for in a corner outfielder. But he has really provided at spark at the major league level. He’s got Bader’s enthusiasm, which is nice.
For the past seven games, eight if they play tonight, O’Neill and Carlson have been sharing CF. Dickerson and Noot are just too hot to bench off the corners.
Who will the OF be next season? And who will be the reserves? Better bring a hot bat because the manager notices “who is hot and who is not”.
In light of DeJong showing no signs of being a legitimate hitter, could the Cardinals make a wild swing for Trea Turner? I know there’s almost a negative chance of it happening, but it could open up some trade possibilities with Winn for a young Ace.
DeJong’s contact comes off the books after 2023, I think. Mikolas’s does, for sure. Could the Cardinals field a team under that contract structure?
Last year Corey Seager got 10 years and $325M. I think Trea Turner is better than Seager so his contract will be massive. I don’t see the Cardinals swimming in those deep waters.
You can read the details on the Regional Networks thread, but there is a reasonable risk that the revenue flow from the 25-year TV contract may be interrupted and/or reduced. If so, a direct impact on the payroll would almost certainly follow. Just the uncertainty of it all could become a problem.
Yep, I am wondering if the decreased spending by St Louis this year had to do with both the lowered revenues from the pandemic years as well as looking to next year’s potential shortfall? I had presumed that the Cards would have a $170-180M payroll for next year, but that may be quite a bit too generous.
The likely plan is to make Edman the full-time SS and rotate Gorman and Donovan at 2B. If they did do something, I could see Jose Iglesias or even Elvis Andrus, who has been surprisingly good for the White Sox, being more in their price range. Personally, I would like to see them commit Edman to 2B and Gorman to DH/1B after this season and plug SS with a more proven entity, but that is probably a luxury they can’t pursue based on their recent spending and the need to keep the position open for Winn’s development.

Arenado advanced further in the post season with Colorado in 2018 than he has so far with the Cardinals. They at least won the WC and advanced. The risk is that he has gained an understanding of what Mo means by “competitive”, and its not what he had in mind. All the more concerning given the Gorman sputter, no matter what the ‘he’ll be fine’ hype mongers are peddling.

No way will Arenado leave. And he’ll be driven to hit better in the playoffs in 2023.
The key IMHO is to have consistent producers batting behind Goldy and Arenado in the 4 and 5 hole or 5 and 6 hole. We have terrific potential for that. Just have to see who’s going to step up between O’Neill, Gorman, Yepez, Walker at one point, Burleson, and maybe even Gomez later in the year.
When is the deadline for Arenado’s decision?
And are there any guesses as to when Wainwright will announce his decision about 2023?
As far as free agents, trades, or extensions, it will be interesting to see if they go after a veteran catcher, a Dickerson type versatile outfielder, and try to extend Quintana.
At least Gorman got a hit and a rbi in an important situation. That’s more than the big guns did all series.
It’s going to be interesting to watch the health and productivity of O’Neill along with the further development of Nootbaar, Carlson, Gorman, Yepez, Burleson, Walker, and Gomez.
Pitching should be in decent shape with the M core and others.
Wainwright needs to retire. DeJong does not need to take up a roster spot next year no matter what that means for his 9M salary.
Need a true #1 starter to go with Quintana, Montgomery, Mikolas and whatever revolving door of names is the #5. What to do with Matz???
Need a starting catcher, Knizner is ok as a back up.
Infield is in good shape – for now – Goldschmidt will likely begin to fade but Arenado should be solid for 3-4 more seasons. Edman at short / Donvan at second.
Need a big bat / offensive producer for the of to go with Carlson / O’Neill / Dickerson. Nootbar and his .228 average cannot start – just can’t.
Hopefully some of the younger guys like Donovan and Yepez will actually improve and not pull a Carlson / O’Neil and go backwards.
Three biggest disappointments for me this season were Carlson, Flaherty, and O’Neil.
Jordan Walker likely won’t be with the big club when the season starts but may be by mid-season.
FO has got to know that they have a window here with a pretty decent core to actually be good for a few seasons instead of just ‘competative’.
